Hot Summer haters ?

I had decided not to listen to any of the previously released tracks before the album was released but today I did give hot summer a listen as it was on a cd that was in my car and today is for the uk a very hot summer's day.

I never hated the song I always quite enjoyed it and again today I thought it was an enjoyable short little funky pop song. Kind of like a poppy Sly and The Family Stone song with Prince's and Liv's co lead vocals and the chugging organ.

It made me wonder why exactly is the song so hated.

So if you hate it, Why?

It's a good song. He edged his bets, saying he thought it was gonna be an hot summer. But he got it right again. This Welcome 2 America album was ahead of it's time. He's speaking about the present from the past . Genius from beyond the grave.

I can't speak for anyone else but the reason I personally dislike the song is that it's just so bland and boring. And I hate the woman's voice on the song.

I think people just think it's a bit corny and bland for a Prince song. I don't hate it, and I'm curious to hear it in the context of an album.

Anyone remember when Prince was being a dick about old bands of his trying to use their original names, and put out the Mutiny/Ice Cream Castles rehearsal, saying he's "taking back the ship/U shoulda been a little more hip?"

And then Fdeluxe got him with an epic troll. It's probably not as funny if you're not from a state that has a Menards. https://soundcloud.com/dr...-menards-1

I've always loved it. Fun and catchy little pop song, nothing wrong with it IMO.

Not a bad song.I disliked it when i first heard it years ago when it was released but I listened to it again a few nights ago.
Not as horrible as I remembered. It is a catchy song
Didn't the leader of the Prince protege group "The family" poke fun at the song on social media years ago??

Hot Summer is a cheesy pop song that makes Katy Perry's "California Girls" sound like a master piece.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I'm guessing that it may work well in context of the entire album, given its heavier themes. A nice little breezy pop interlude.

It is weird, with me actually loving the first two digital singles of the Welcoe 2 America album, but in 2010, Hot Summer was played on The Current and then was widely shared by the ones not near their station and came right after Purple And Gold, which IS a song I severly hate, while I just merely severly dislike Hot Summer. It just sounded feeble, somehow, just as Rich Friends and Cause And Effect; it sounded like Prince got sloppy on the songwriting front, both melody and lyrics could not interest me.

While the two new songs sound warm to my ears; the music and lyrics flow. I was never a big fan of Prince backing singers doing solos or too much shouting/wailing, it sounded jarring to me, but on Welcome 2 America they're awesome. If that and Born 2 Die had been released, and played live, I would not have gotten bored with Prince in 2010, which is what I did.

I don't hate it like I did back then, but this is by no means his best especially from this hit & miss era.

It's Shake, Cream and late 00's lyrical laziness.

I was 16 when this came out and was real annoyed at the let downs when news of a new Prince single would come out. Was really hoping he would hit really big to be relevant to my demographic at the time haha

I catch myself singing the chorus of this song more than I'd like to admit.

I think it's a decently catchy song that moreso falls into the guilty pleasure category than a really good song.

Well, this comment calls to mind the state of young women at the end of a heavy night clubbing. Like, what on earth could be monumentous about that.
But eh, maybe that's how Prince picked them. Get 'em drunk and then 'pretend' rescue them after they jump in the pool.

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

I remember when it was released and I didn't like it. Can't remember anything about this song. Don't feel the urge to listen again, but I know I will at least once: when the W2A album drops!

Prince knew the heatwave was coming this year back in 2010

I like how he smuggled in commentary on climate change in a song without anyone knowing. So clever. No heavy handedness.

Always ahead of his time.

Yeah man, I was also very impressed by prince predicting the year 1999 by 1982 already!

Maaaan
It's like, Orwell could only see up to 84
But in 82 prince knew 84 wasnt going to be like in the book
He knew how it was looking in 99
Like, in the 90s there was a lot of millennial angst and new world order theories
But prince saw that in 82

Theres also the song hot thing
Lot of ppl dont know it but ite a song on how extreme heat levels affect libido and sexuality, eventually causing a kind of insanity in the songs protagonist

Knowing that he released this song in 2010 on some radiostaion for his 52nd birthday,

i thought, let's give it another try. I feel good today. biggrin

-

Well, i listened a couple of times (3x) to give it a chance, but ... oh my.

The song sounds like a uninterested short dry fart coming from funky tight ass.

This isn't even a pop song to me.

It's nothing more than a children's tune for a children's program.

Sorry guys. biggrin

-

It kicks off with a sloppy beat and an out of place distorded hold-back guitar riff, and an awfull drum fill-in.

The scream ''Oh Hot Summer'', doesn't sound hot at all.

OK for the organ, but it's a ripp off of ''Shake!''

The whole production is lame.

-

"Oh, hot summer
Hot summer yeah
Oh, hot summer
Hot summer yeah
Hot summer yeah
Oh, as long as You're my
Oh, as long as You're my"

-

Very inspiring, deep intelligent and promissing lyrics. :-/

So that's the first 0:32 sec.

-

"Hot summer, hot summer yeah
Just wait and C
Hot summer, hot summer yeah
Shoo-be-do-we
Hot summer
Oh, as long as You're my
As long as You're my company

C the people gathered all around
Dancing 2 a futuristical sound

Some of them R teachers, some R clowns
All deserve a hug and a pound
'Cause it's gonna B

A Hot Summer"

-

That is one hell of a futuristic sound to see all the people (Who?) gathering around.

I mean really ?? Teachers & Clowns ?

Yep, they deserve a hug and a ... pound. :-O

Prince ? Were you sleeping when you wrote these hopeless lyrics ?

"Let me see you shake your head now"

Sure i'm sticking my head underneath a pillow.

And from hearing his low uniterested voice backed by an annoying background singer,

he didn''t had loads of fun.

-

"Everybody's got a favorite friend
They got your back no matter what till the end
Ain't got no breaks but got a whole lot of bend
Every broken heart can mend"

-

Prince, you can do way better than this.

-
U better believe it
Y is life always a mystery?

Life just is not a mystery (but that's a whole other conversation i never had the chance to have with Prince).

-
"It will B whatever it will B
It all depends on what U think U C
U, eye don't know, but me

I think its gonna be a hot summer..."

-

So Prince thinks it's gonna be a hot summer (...)

And then the repeated part of this uninspired lyric...

The guitar solo is a not even to mention, just a throwaway and out of place effort.

It ends !

What a shit track this is.

Hope there is no extended version.

Sorry guys. biggrin

Peace though.

-

Wonder what Tal Wilkenfeld has to say about this.

Now tell me where the climat change thing is in these lyrics ?

Listening to it now. I like the guitar riff and the cheesy sounding organ....has a "So Far, So Pleased" vibe to it...Not crazy about the song, but it would fit right at home in a wine cooler/seltzer commercial.

Apparently, it works well in context on the album.

Why the Estate chose to release it as a standalone track, I do not know. Most people who have previewed the album consider 'Hot Summer' the weakest song.

It sounds like a commerical jingle for a cut-rate amusment park. Canyou picture it playing on a local TV commericial over top images of midwestern families disengenously smiling as they ride a tilt-a-whirl and float down a lazy river? Once of those jingles that is intended to be annoying to get stuck in your head?
