is "living doll" one of the greatest songs ever written?

is it the ultimate in trashy pop? is it the best melody man has ever penned? i think so, let's show some love to this underappreciated masterpiece.

my daddy does indeed say i'm a living doll

Well, tbh, it's the first time i hear it. smile

Never heard this Jill song before.

Nice, thank you !

Would've been a perfect fit for Apollonia or Vanity even.

No, it was a fabrication, no evidence was found, all charges were dropped.

Or better yet

To the original question: The outro is lovely. But I never really want to hear the 2 minutes that preceded it ever again.

Well, to me, those two minutes that procede it are just great production of a silly melody.

I love the weird drum sizzle and the squeeling Lovesexy guitar throuhgout the song.

ANd one can't deny the always fantastic sounding Jill Jones.

Her voice has so much character (imho).

-

And the second part is indeed lovely, fantastic even.

But it doesn't fit the song all that properly (since she has no vocal part in it), so it feels left out.

I agree.

Someone here made a thread somewhere about ''what part of a song you wish Prince used for a complete song'', and this is one.

-

Shame she never got to release a second album.

Prince was sometimes such a big... nevermind.

wink

The latter. It's on Blast From the Past # 4. I had forgotten about it too, which is why I thought about Cliff Richard first and decided to make a little joke about that.

Because Prince wrote so many songs that there will be songs that you overlook. Unless maybe when you never listen to anything else.

I gave it a listen and while it is of course nowhere near one of the best songs ever written, it is a perfect example of trashy 80s pop.

Crazy. I have it indeed and have zero recollection of ever hearing it.

It's retro for 1985, much in the vein of P's earlier rockabilly stuff, but nice to (re?)discover biggrin

EDIT: Oh, that ending!! yes

It's fun, like Prince doing 'This Year's Model' era Elvis Costello. The ending is sublime, but seems musically and thematically at odds with the rest of the song.

That's what I was thinking, it's almost as if the ending was lifted from another song and glued on this one.

The more I read about their relationship in Duane's book, the more I'm convinced he was giving her crap songs to mess with her.

The Jill Jones album is really good. You wouldn't say that Mia Bocca or All Day All Night are crap songs now, would ya?

I have a running joke beef with a friend about her. Some of the songs are fun, but i just don't really like her singing. Always sounds she's trying too hard.

This song, uh, nope! razz

Well, I've been listening to Parade era tracks while reading Duane Tudahl's Parade Era Sessions book and when I listened to Living Doll i thought Susan Rogers was right - not every song was great. lol

Also, shouldn't this be in the Associated Artists forum? wink
