The first studio album I bought was Émancipation, and I thought the production was all Prince, when in fact I fell on the only one who wasn't produced by Prince! I was 15 years old, in 2002, I had no internet. I thought the first weeks of listening that the covers, that were my favourites songs of the album were all Prince too! I read the booklet of course, but IIRC it was indicated that all the songs were "composed by Prince", so I assumed that Betcha..., Lalala, and One of Us, were written by somebody else FOR Prince, but composed BY him ! What stuck for this theory was that from my recollection ( again, no internet to check it out) was that One of Us was released around 1996, the same year than Émancipation, by a one-hit- wonder. Since that Prince wrote so many hits for so many artists, that was logical to me that was the original song. Moreover the line " Just a slave like 1 of us" Fitted so well with the concept of the album, that it couldn't be someone else's song. I couldn't believe Prince would release a 36 songs album to do covers! Same thing about Lalala, because some years before 2002, the song was played on a tv add, so I assumed it was in fact Prince's version, since there couldn't be two versions of the same songs in a few years.

He does say at the beginning of One of Us that he didn't write the song though biggrin

What?!
Absolutely not.

no he doesn't . And slave word was not the original lyric and One Of Us the original was released in 1995

Of course, I reflected on my first impressions

I came across this. But there is nothing 'officially' out there of who did that scream on Gett Off.........

I believe it is Prince that does the scream.

https://www.newsweek.com/...he%20time.

That article doesn't say it's Prince, does it? It seems to just be concerned with the House of Pain sample rumor and refers to it as a"prince" track. It even mentions fans saying it's Rosie. Didn't someone on the org ask Levi that question years ago?

The scream that opens Gett Off is different than the two in that article. They are short and shrill; the Gett Off scream jumps up and down.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

The first part of the scream, literally the first second or so is Prince's voice. We all know it was him.

For the longest time I thought Prince did the guitar solo in Little Red Corvette. Even seeing the video where Prince isn't even holding a guitar, I thought it was just so he could dance. Either way, I still enjoy the track the same!

in a way he did it. he cut and paste 3 different takes of Dez soloing into 1 version so Dez had to learn how to play that solo from the final record.

People thought it was the up part of the scream that was sampled. But, I think the article points out that its actually a saxophone sample and then on a remix they went ahead and used the first half of the Get Off scream.

Of course it s Rosie'scream, there s no debate about it.

For the skeptics about Sexy MF, you can hear Prince singing the Levi Seacer' line on the Purple Medley. Definitely not the same voice.

...and the "Sexy MF" Remix backing vox.

Also, the short live version of "Gett Off" from the NPGMC proves (for me) that Rosie is the screaming culprit.

Back in the day, i thought that the Madhouse '16' album was also all Prince on drums.

i just heard the "Sixteen" track today in the shuffle.

Wooooooooo, Sheila can bang!!! lol

This would be a great "Prince quiz" topic - pick out a part on a song, was it Prince or a bandmate? I like to think I've got a good ear for his playing after so many years, but probably there are a few curve-balls in there. Honestly I'm not sure about "If U Love Somebody" - some licks really sound like Prince to my ears, but Mike was great at giving Prince he wanted to hear so maybe? Let's call that one unverified.

Thanks for reminding me of the song though, I hadn't listened to it since the album came out, better than I remembered!

Another guitar part I always thought was very underappreciated was Prince's solo on "I Will". It's short and sweet, reminiscent of "The Morning Papers" for its simplicity but the wah just makes it. Gorgeous.

Where is "I Will" from?

Some might think the scream in the beginning of Gett Off was him, but it was Rosie Gaines.
That's also Levi Seacer who did the vocal gimmick "U Sexy Motherfucker" In Sexy MF.

I thought that was Prince who did the harmonica-like sound in Thieves in The Temple, but it was just a sample from I done remember who.
[Edited 5/3/21 8:44am]

You're suggesting Levi sang the chorus line of "you sexy motherfucker"?

Lmao. Rod, you really jumped the shark with that one. You can't tell that Prince is singing the chorus? Really?

It's Levi. That's been known since it'a release. Come on. It's ovbviously his voice even if you don't see the music video where they always cut to him to say the chorus, as he did on the recording.

Actually check out the music video and listen to Levi's voice when he's talking in the banter before the song drops. It sure sounds like Levi. Maybe someone has the scoop here?

I mean, that doesn't sound like Levi to me and him mouthing the lyrics doesn't mean much. The Time mouthed the backing vocals for those music videos and it's obviously Prince.

I've never not thought Prince was singing the chorus of Sexy MF and that ain't a troll. It doesn't NOT sound like Prince and I've heard Levi sing plenty on tours. Idk why people are acting like it doesn't sound like Prince

Because it doesn't. You remind me of the MJ fams who thought it was MJ on the Cascio songs, or the Beatles fans who can't tell wheter it s Lennon or McCartney singing ( It does really exist!)
It s very obvious when you compare with the Purple Medley version, that I just went to discover thanks to the dedicated topic

lol

Why is Levi singing the line and not Prince?
Surely to add to the confusion of the lyrics ( not your body, your mind you fool/ U sexy MF), Prince not wanting to assume the double speech

The Rosie debate was strong here about Gett Off. Lol.

I still think it was Prince and Rosie with Rosie having the lead vocal.

Come on now, it is so obviously NOT Prince`s voice. The person singing the Sexy MF part has a completely different voice from Prince. I can`t even believe this is being discussed here. I immediately knew it wasn`t Prince when I first listened to it as new fan back in the day.
