You thought it was Prince?

So we do know or recognise which parts Prince played on his albums.but sometimes when u think Prince played guitar piano or drums but than you find out it was not him.

for example

I always thought that 3 Chains Of Gold is all Prince on guitar until Levi Seacer told me that first part of the songs all guitars are him and at the end is Prince.

When U Love Somebody-i was sure that guitar is Prince but it's all Mike Scott,as a matter of fact Prince didn't play guitar on NPS at all.

Some might think the scream in the beginning of Gett Off was him, but it was Rosie Gaines.
That's also Levi Seacer who did the vocal gimmick "U Sexy Motherfucker" In Sexy MF.

I thought that was Prince who did the harmonica-like sound in Thieves in The Temple, but it was just a sample from I done remember who.

Levi is shown miming that vocal in the video, right? I thought it was clear that was him saying the chorus.

The Rosie debate was strong here about Gett Off. Lol.

This would be a great "Prince quiz" topic - pick out a part on a song, was it Prince or a bandmate? I like to think I've got a good ear for his playing after so many years, but probably there are a few curve-balls in there. Honestly I'm not sure about "If U Love Somebody" - some licks really sound like Prince to my ears, but Mike was great at giving Prince he wanted to hear so maybe? Let's call that one unverified.

Thanks for reminding me of the song though, I hadn't listened to it since the album came out, better than I remembered!

Another guitar part I always thought was very underappreciated was Prince's solo on "I Will". It's short and sweet, reminiscent of "The Morning Papers" for its simplicity but the wah just makes it. Gorgeous.

The harmonica is sampled from "I Can’t Stand It" by The Chambers Brothers (from The Time Has Come, 1967, written by Lester Chambers, also released as a single in 1968), which is also sampled on "Black M.F. In The House."

The "
Thieves In The House Mix" and "Temple House Dub" also include samples from "Batdance" and "eye No" as well as "Dish & Tell" by House Of Venus (released as a single in 1990, written by Eddie de Clerq, Erik van Putten and Gert Van Veen).

I read this a few years ago in a very long sound ingeneer interview. I can't remember the name though. IIRC, he was fired because Prince thought he worked with someone else.
He also said things like Prince tried a guitar solo under water biggrin

I also read it somewhere else, maybe Questlove?

On Push It Up... second verse is clearly sung by Larry Graham (uncredited IIRC) - I've read quite a few times people praising Prince for his low-range voice on that one...

The guitar solo on Taja Sevelle's "If I Could Get Your Attention".
I had thought Prince was trying out new things there.
Great solo btw.

That article doesn't say it's Prince, does it? It seems to just be concerned with the House of Pain sample rumor and refers to it as a"prince" track. It even mentions fans saying it's Rosie. Didn't someone on the org ask Levi that question years ago?

The first studio album I bought was Émancipation, and I thought the production was all Prince, when in fact I fell on the only one who wasn't produced by Prince!
I was 15 years old, in 2002, I had no internet.

I thought the first weeks of listening that the covers, that were my favourites songs of the album were all Prince too!

I read the booklet of course, but IIRC it was indicated that all the songs were "composed by Prince", so I assumed that Betcha..., Lalala, and One of Us, were written by somebody else FOR Prince, but composed BY him !

What stuck for this theory was that from my recollection ( again, no internet to check it out) was that One of Us was released around 1996, the same year than Émancipation, by a one-hit- wonder. Since that Prince wrote so many hits for so many artists, that was logical to me that was the original song.
Moreover the line " Just a slave like 1 of us" Fitted so well with the concept of the album, that it couldn't be someone else's song.

I couldn't believe Prince would release a 36 songs album to do covers!

Same thing about Lalala, because some years before 2002, the song was played on a tv add, so I assumed it was in fact Prince's version, since there couldn't be two versions of the same songs in a few years.

Since insiders said it was Rosie,
that Prince to my knowledge never did that Scream live,
and since he never sued for the remix of the house of pain sample ( while he sued for the use of the word " Tenessee" For the Arrested Development song) I would say it's obvious it s not him.

The scream has been confirmed as Rosie by various band members, as recently as this week by Morris Hayes on a Facebook thread about it.
