Waw. Super happy with this. THANK YOU !

-

Honestly, I've watched this many times and more, again.

I don't know why, but it always seems to grab me.

Time and time again. I know the solo by heart even.

I get emotional of listening, looking at this, every single time.

I never have that with anything else Prince.

I wonder why that is.

This is just so simple, and so good.

As if he is an equal part of a 'band' of greats, maybe it's that.

Don't know.

Pure musicianship, and he seemed very happy.

Just as normal as he can be.

Maybe it's that what touches me so much.

It grabs me over and over again.

Nothing in what Dahni says after the fact alludes to him saying anything bad about Prince or the performance. He's affirmed the fact that he enjoyed the showmanship. He's just commenting on the unexpectedness of the whole thing.

It's also worth remembering that (Morris Hayes?) said that Prince deliberately held back during rehearsal specifically so he could blow their mind during the performance.

Dhani's story backs that up.

I think Dhani's later comments reflect his mother.
Remember, Olivia Harrison wanted the tribute to George to ONLY be performed by musicians he had recorded or played with.

She had to be convinced that Prince could participate; after all, he was THE big star inducted to the RRHOF that evening. Dhani seemed to enjoy it but *later* took another track in showing displeasure.

So there were two slights to Prince: Olivia's reticence and that guitar player stepping into his solos. So, that gave him the attitude and he ended up wiping them off the floor.

Throwing the guitar and stomping away was finesse.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Yes, it was that guy who was doing that Clapton solo.
After the broadcast Harrisons wife or someone else posted another mix of the performance where Prince's solo was less loud and you can hear that guy again squeeling annoyingly through the end of Prince's solo.

Except the guy playing the Clapton solo was immaculate. Pardon his constant o or oh expression, playing simple is fine if you're hitting the right notes.

Who gives a shit about what Dahni said or didn't say? His father (who was DEAD btw) was being honored as well that night and also wrote the god damned song to begin with so he's allowed to opine.

Prince destroyed and brought his Guitar God A-Game on a night when, in addition to being honored himself, had to fill Eric Fucking Clapton's shoes on the solo and delivered in spades after respectfully layng back and giving the stage to everyone else for 90% of the song -- including a really good Winwood solo.

Everyone seemed to have fun and the performance was legendary, vaulting Prince into the public consciousness as a top tier axe player and turning millions of heads who didn't know the way we do.

IMO, you kind of have to be a certain kind of petty (no pun intended) to nitpick this thing with celebrity gossip bullshit. Take that shit to Twitter or Reddit.

It's the best thing since the previous version.

At first one could think 'where is Prince?' if they do not pay that much attention.

But closer to the end he gets plenty of camera time...

Prince overexposure? Does that exist?

And also: it is a Director's Cut. Not the cut for the poor souls of the general public.

The Director might have felt the need to go this way to satisfy his or her's urges w.r.t. this performance...

That is pretty legit reason for a Director's Cut.

I couldn't find it online, but there's a Cirque Du Soleil behind the scenes video about The Beatles Love production in Vegas.

Judging from that video, Olivia Harrison is a terror. She was taking notes on the acrobatic acts and arguing with Cirque's producers about whether the acts were "compatible" with George's vision for the music.

Paul and Yoko were there too, but were much more subdued and calm in their interactions with the show's producers.

Has anyone noticed that a detail of one guitar part had been reworked afterwards?
Here https://youtu.be/83zqqfKh2_k?t=122 on the original audio version we can hear him playing from 02:02 - 02:09 the notes C, D, E, G, Fsharp, G, Fsharp, G, Fsharp, G.
Which has been changed on the released version to C, D, E, G, Fsharp, G, Fsharp, G, F, G on the aired version.

What?! 😂
I think my post is already quite detailed.
Do as you wish.
Compare those two snippets if you want to.
And don't do it, if you don't want to.
And if you do, you can start with the first link or the second link.
Quite simple. 😄

On the night he was smiling and nodding at P and at the end could be heard saying 'where's Prince?" but a few years later...

.

Dhani in an interview: "the classic back bend guitar throw, which was a little gratuitous...I was smiling because I was just like...oh man...I can imagine Tom and Jeff wondering what the hell is going on...I was just kind of laughing at how awkward the whole thing was..."

What a little bitch. It was only awkward to him because where's his career? He's only there before he looks like his father and shares his name. No one is calling him because he's talented or has made even an ounce of difference in the musical landscape of the fucking world.

Tom's like wallpaper anyway. You can't get a read on the guy. Jeff Lynne smiled and obviously appreciated the moment.

And if the back bend is "classic," why is it suddenly "gratuitous?" The little cunt is talking out of both sides of his trust fund mouth.

Se7en was right - he was in pure awe of Prince.

Not defending what Dhani said but my guess is he was annoyed at all the attention this performance was getting after Prince died, becuase all the attention was on Prince's solo. Of course the reason all the attention is on Prince's solo is because that's the only worthwhile portion of the performance. The rest of it is just a boring note for note rendition of the original.

Sorry, the infomercial for the RnRHoF DVDs just came on and of course I have to watch up to the part where the announcer guy says, "... and this really happened" and then they show you know what. It's as if everyone else on stage was like, Oh, right, we're not playing for the Safe n Predictable Hall of Fame. THAT'S what we're actually here for. Blowing minds and to hell with the rest of it. Thanks for reminding us, Mr. Prince, sir.

The Daily Doug video. Cool story from a music teacher, talking about modal . He happened to be teaching modal mixture theory on April 21, 2016 at Westminster Choir College. Modal mixture is when you go switch between a major and minor, or minor to major, key. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a classic example. He explains it's not necessarily a proper modulation (like going from A to Bb or something)

All said, it was the day Prince passed away. He goes onto do a reaction video (he's seen it before) to talk about the modal mixture theory, that fateful day, and uses the performance as an example for the theory.

He seems to be a big Prince fan, making note that the world is worse off without Prince in it.

Oh, of course. That's totally obvious. Everyone noticed that. You can't miss it.

...

I'm fucking with you because I have no idea about any of that shit.

Also, who said it was boring and lazy until Prince came out? There was a lot of talent on that stage. It's a great song, was performed very tight, Winwood was terrific and without the "by the numbers" approach to the song, it doesn't build and Prince's solo would be less meaningful. You can't have all seven guys (or whatever it was) up there jacking off on their instruments, riffing solos and showing off. ANyone who's seen a show like that knows it usually doesn't work

The song is slow tempo, intricate, builds on itself and then explodes (cue Prince). It's written that way on purpose and even called "GENTLY" Weeps. Notice how Prince laid back, played some rythym and waited before the crescendo to unleash that lightning? It's basic song structure, not wall to wall flash like something Rush might play. It's similar in structure to a story or even a movie and just because the last chapter or a certain scene stole the show and was especially riveting, noneof that works without the slow build. Think Staiway to Heaven or even Free Bird. Purple Rain for that matter.

Prince was the highlight for sure but not the only thing worthy of praise that night.

That's my non guitar playing Fsharp, g, Fsharp understanding opinion on this performance.

Carry on.
