Lists like this are just click bait. I mean....define "best". The wisest? The best song on the record? The one with the most commercial appeal? The one that represents the album the best? The one that will bounce in the clubs? The most mainstream?

TBH, I didn't realize he'd released several of the songs on that list as singles so at least that much was interesting but the whole thing reads like one person deciding what songs they like and then arranging them in a way as to generate the most discussion by being controversial and edgy through listing them in some sort of a subjective order.

Pretty dumb. We could do our own list here and everyone would have a different one.

And any list like this that doesn't have "When Doves Cry" number one doesn't understand the nature of singles and what they are (were) for. That track blew up the fucking radio, vaulted Prince to the next level into superstardom and singular status, sold the movie and stopped people in thier fucking tracks. It was the kind of song that made you remember where you were the first time you heard it back when all you had was the radio and night clubs and had the added benefit of a positively killer b-side.

You immediately wanted to hear it again. It carved its way into your soul like a god damned lightning strike.

all of this...100% Facts

This list is trash. True Prince-ologist know better than to take this list with a grain of salt.

It is just someone having fun talking about Prince subjectively in a list format, it's all good lol

That is what I took from this list. Everyone here would have come up with a different list, for different reasons. That's just the way it is...

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

My eyes widened at the atrocious opening gif.
I'm not sure I can scroll down any further.

Pure clickbait shit.
One line per song a review does not maketh.

If you're going to put 85 songs in one article, you're going to have to keep it short. Apart from the fact that I think Thieves In the Temple is way too low and Breakfat Can Wait should be #85, I like this list.

If you're going to put 85 songs in one article,
you're clickbaiting.

Now if you write 85 plus articles about one song,
you've got my attention.

If you're humble enough not to rank them, even better.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams

The single was gifted to me by someone who kindly offered me a hotel bed two years running for the Paisley Park Celebrations. A treasured memento.

“If I Was Your Girlfriend” is a great song....but is it really his best single?! LOL “When Doves Cry” should be at the top of the list.

Agreed that WDC is probably his best. But IIWYG has to be right up there.

The list i'm not mad at. It is what it is with some folks. It's the captions and commentary that I found unnecessary.

Depends on how you define "best". If it's "biggest hit" then When Doves Cry would be the best in the US. Purple Rain would be best in the Netherlands. If you define "best" as "most unusual, unique, no one else could do this", then If I Was Your Girlfriend surely is the best single ever!
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

I think “When Doves Cry” is a very unique and bold song.It has no bassline, which was unheard of for a 1984 single.

Honestly,I think “If I Was Your Girlfriend” is often overrated not because of how it sounds, but because of its unique subject matter.Musically,it’s not really that groundbreaking, imo.

Hmmm... When I first heard When Doves Cry, I didn't go, oh wow, it doesn't have a bass line! I didn't even notice. When I heard If I Was Your Girlfriend, I was like, huh? Prince is a man, right? How can he be someone's girlfriend? I've never had that with any single by any artist, so I guess we can say there is no single in the world like If I Was Your Girlfriend.

I did not notice that WDC or Kiss did not have a bass even when told i was "So what?"

but I got IIWYG right away.... (I was 18). But Yeah I got how crazy brilliant and daring it was. I was shocked it was a single but still... great song. His BEST single? I am not sure...but yeah it is great song.

I might have only heard Girlfriend on the radio once. One morning on WBLS, they were like, we're gonna play a new Prince song and we wanna know what you think. So a woman calls in and is all upset, thinking it was a gay song and she didn't want her son listening to it.

Doves, on the other hand... I remember it was like a light switched on in my head. I hadn't heard anything like it before. I had no idea who it was. (Oddly, the only singer that came to mind was Jim Morrison.) I immediately checked the other stations, hoping to hear it again. (Rock stations were playing it too. Any station that played current popular music played Doves.) It seems I did that for a couple days, until I found out who it was and went to buy the single.
