Judging by these threads this is spot on

He can speak his mind as much as he likes but it does not automatically make for a good song. It's all personal taste if course but i don't find the music ar lyrics very engaging. Love the production though.

I'm pretty stunned at all the know-it-alls on this site....

Of course, no one has to like anything, but here's a new track from our man that's been out the gate for like 5 minutes and many of you all have it tarred, feathered and ready to hang.

Cheesus.

Give the damn thing a chance to breathe.

I mean I'm all for discussion, but some of the comments on here. Did you just hear Prince's music for the first time, today? Wow.

I'm not sure why this is being released... it's not funky enough... it's too political... it's not really a song.

All bullshit. Sorry. Get those ears listening a little more and stop throwing the obvious fruit. At least give the album a chance before you disregard it completely.

LOL.... you folks......

c'mon. this is a cool track, there's so much going on you just have to pay attention to it, and even on the surface the chill and spaced out vibe sunk into me real quick, i love it. some of the lyrics are dumb, but i like the spoken word delivery and i think this absolutely kicks the shit out of most of 20ten. i have high hopes for the rest of this record.

I think both Hot Summer and Same Page Different Book are decent songs and I enjoy the new single. I don't expect W2A to be a masterpiece but I think it will be good album. I would be more worried if Purple and gold was on this album lol

Most people here will get the album regardless of the first impressions. I think it's mainly the SD that seems to under deliver. But I'll always buy his new and old music.

Not really.
I like money dont matter 2nite, sign o the times.
Diff being they are also good songs.
They are also more coherent.
If prince wrote better songs about race, politics, etc in his later years, that would be fine.
My personal preference for songs in this period is just the songs where he wasnt repeating himself, where he wasnt trying to do typical sexy prince. e.g here, breakdown, June, reflection, revelation.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. So much bitching and complaining...no one's ever satisfied. P is gone, and instead of being grateful for the gifts he left behind, folks are calling him a crazy conspiracy theorist and a lazy musician who writes lyrics like a teenager. It's disgusting. A complete lack of respect for a man we all (mostly) claim to love. I don't get it. It's very troubling to me.

Different opinions are fine, but when folks speak ill of the dead, that's sick. I just don't know about this place anymore, honestly...

Back on topic: I love the song. The groove is slick as hell! The lyrics are like slam poetry. It's gonna take me several more listens to really be able to analyze the song, but the message is serious and its relevance persists even today. Production-wise, it sounds like TRC 2.0 -- organic and funky. If the whole album is like this, I'll be a happy man!

Actually dyou know what, it is true that I dont care much to hear princes political thoughts. And that's not cos occasionally he gets it right, he does, but mostly I'm just not interested in hearingtthat from him. Not cos i dont want to hear it from a black artist, I just dont really take it that seriously from prince. And mostly, hes just not that good at it. He lacks that gravitas. Its also cos of his track record. I dont see him like I do gil Scot heron, a nina simone, or even a James brown. So give me old vault tracks about jacking off, little red corvettes, and vibrators please, and do it soon.

biggrin cool lol

I am glad I am not the only one that didnt understand exactly what Prince is trying to say there. I thought it is because I dont live in the USA and didnt notice some of the references.

.

The song is cool, but, like somebody said, it´s basically an intro to the album. Not a good choice for a single, if the Estate wanted it to be outside of his die-hard fanbase. I enjoy listening to it, but I doubt a non-fan will.

The message of the song really isn't that complicated, I don't think.

It's basically about corruption. How the US is supposed to be this land of opportunity, but has soured into a place where corruption rules and where people will do anything to get famous and stay rich.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he might have held the album back because he ultimately felt this was too negative a message.... of course, we haven't heard most of the rest of the album yet, and Hot Summer isn't in the same cynical vein.... but still.

And I think people need to understand the difference between singles in the classic sense, and promotional releases.

The moment Prince died he became a LEGACY ARTIST. That's what he is now. Legacy artists don't have chart hits.... I'm sure there are a few exceptions that someone will quickly point out, but those are just that - very rare exceptions.

Releasing the title track early is not 'releasing a single' in the sense that it's trying to have a hit... it's simply raising awareness of the album's existence, and using the title track is the perfect way to do that.

Some people on here act like they think Prince should still be having hits, or charting or getting played on the radio.

That is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. Prince is dead. The wider world does not care about any of his releases going forward.

These are all archival releases. They are worth releasing because they become part of the catalogue that trickles money in over time, as well a small initial surge on first release. This is why there are deluxe editions that are more pricey, to bring in those extra dollars.

Also, there is no 'winning over a new fan base' for legacy artists. The only people the estate are releasing these to are those that are already paying attention.

It's the same with every big legacy act.... Bowie, Led Zepellin, King Crimson, etc. etc.... hell, it's even how they work it with Dylan's catalogue and he's still around making great music.

You pacakge up releases and sell them for good money to the existing fanbase who are the ones that want this stuff.... Any additional sales to newbies are a bonus.

And although this may sound reductive, it's worth doing because it also puts more product out there, so that over time, yes, more people may pick up on the catalogue through a streaming recommendation, etc.

But this whole idea of 'we need to recruit more soldiers into the army of Prince listeners' is very unrealistic, I'm afraid.

All that said, those people saying 'this isn't a real song' and 'this is a weird choice for a single', are, to me, caught somewhere between not knowing what a real song is and not understanding the difference between 'singles' and 'promos'.

there are 110 days left until the album drops. or about 15 weeks. so that's room enough for more singles from this album. it's ok that they went with this type of mission statement intro track as it will be better to give the project more push toward the release date with more radio friendly singles.

the song itself is ok, just like i thought HOT SUMMER and SAME PAGE DIFFERENT BOOK were ok when they were released. i'm not expecting the earth to drop away from under my feet when listening to the music prince recorded after 2001. sometimes it does though, like with LOTUSFLOWER and that is an extra added bonus.

i do however enjoy the fuck out of it still and listen to his later music as much as his 80s and early 90s albums.

lastly, i like that morris and shelby and liv and elisa etc get to have a say this time around and be in the spotlight for a bit and shine their spotlight on the later life and recordings of prince. i'm tired of hearing from the same people over and over and it's cool to see the estate is working with era specific people as well and don't just stick with 1 tight group of people to cover all the years.

loved reading these last few posts, you are spot on. I concider anything released now as a gift. I do not expect another Sign of The Times quality track or album to be released. And i think that would be stupid to expect. The quailty of vault tracks released so far including this one, has actually surprised me how decent they are. I think this is a good track. Prince is my favorite artist by a counry mile. And wish he was still here. And to be frank anything more i get from him is a blessing to me. And of course there are some songs or concerts that are stronger than others. The huge amount of material that prince recorded there is bound to be hit amd miss, but that is kinda the beauty of following Prince isnt it

Nicely put.
I agree with all of that.
And I would be happy just with middle ranking songs at this point, but this one just seems lifeless, and underwritten.
It's not even average.
I'd file it in a playlist called underwhelming prince tributes in the mould of his 70s heroes.

But fingers x the album has a few keepers. I'm sure it will.

I love the “realness” of W2A. The lyrics, the arresting vocal and instrumental performances, that bass!! It’s not pop star stuff by any stretch and I’m delighted by that. Prince always made me happiest in the long-term when he challenged me from the start. I cannot wait to hear this complete album. I think it might be very special.

I'm loving it. The sound, the production, the delivery, the bass...

I find this more exciting and engaging than anything else released since Prince's passing.

For me, these kind of unreleased time capsule albums sequenced and produced as Prince intended are a lot more desirable and authentic.
