'It's a great adventure story,' says singer Rickie Lee Jones of her new memoir

A colorful cast of characters populates the hipster pop star's new memoir.

Rather, "Last Chance Texaco: Chronicles of an American Troubadour" is a heroic story of an American family trying to find its way — her dancing peg-leg vaudevillian grandfather; her orphaned parents; her brother who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident, and a creative young woman with a fertile imagination who believed in fairies and magic.

.

.
"Last Chance Texaco" does not address her encounters with Prince, a labelmate at Warner Bros. who became a fan of Jones' work. He invited her to his concert in London in 1988. But she only made it to the after-party because she had to wait for a sitter for her newborn daughter.

.
"Prince saw me, and he smiled and walked across the room and took my hand. And said, 'Did you enjoy the show?' I said, 'I didn't see it. I couldn't get a babysitter.' And he turned and walked away. Ha ha ha. That was it. I disappointed him."

Poor Ricky. Prince wanted to be complimented, I guess -- and in her situation, there was no correct answer.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

What would we do without these Prince stories? Watch Netflix, play tennis? Every paragraph provides such juice. So thoughtful was Prince, always providing the entertainment we need.

Rickie Lee Jones bares ne...mtoday.com

Jones devotes an additional eight sentences to San Diego-bred music legend Waits, who posed with her in the photo on the back cover of his 1978 album, "Blue Valentine." Tellingly, Waits is not mentioned again until 270 pages later, in Chapter 17 of "Last Chance Texaco." No less tellingly, the book — published by Grove Press — has no index for readers to use to skip to other Waits-related entries.

.

Might this be a carefully plotted way to get people to dive in — and to first learn a fair amount of Jones' story — before she returns her attention to Waits, who she met Los Angeles in 1977?

.

"That's totally accurate," she replied, speaking by phone from her home in New Orleans.
