It's hard to argue with Do Me, Baby, Adore and The Beautiful Ones being in the very top tier.

.

Although I'm all about The Hits edit of Do Me, Baby. The album version with the 'I'm so cold, hold me' brings a lump to the back of my shorts

.

Personally, I'd have Shhh and I Hate U near the top of my list

Anyway...

I wouldn't say the greatest. But it made me uncomfortable like SISIA used to. Which says a lot.

Time keeps on slipping into the future...

I'm not quite sure what 2 call the song "Solo" but if it is a ballad, it is his best one.

It's among Prince's very best ballads for me, yes. But perhaps the greatest in my estimation would have to be 'Revelation', particularly in terms of later material.

Far from, IMHO.

Some of his greatest ballads according to me:

- Do Me Baby

- The Beautiful Ones

- How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore

- Adore

- The Question Of U

- Joy In Repetition

- eye Love U but eye Don't Trust You Anymore

- Solo

All of these I enjoy more than The Breakdown, I can't stand the distortion.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I wouldn't call it a Ballad, its more a "Lament"...and not a very good one IMO, the lyrics are unrelateable and cheesy

What's the use in half a story, half a dream

The lyrics are trite, but the vocal delivery is really impassioned - which is about all it's got going for it. The production of the studio version is really bad.

I remember loving listening to it on an audio boot of the Montreux gig. Recorded with 3rdeyegirl it might have made a very good addition to Plectrumelectrum. But then I remember watching the boot and being very confused by the muted out horn section.

I find that I am drawn more to his spirituals:

-Still Would Stand All Time

-The Cross

-The Love We Make

-Love, Thy Will Be Done

Or the FUNKY.

Breakdown is really raw, though. I think he even said that it was like having no protection (emotionally)

Good God no. To be honest, most of his late ballads weren't awesome.

Damn U, Insatiable, Scandalous, DMB, Adore, TBO, SISIA, ILUIM, Shhh, The One,

Prince has some of the best ballads of all time. Breakdown isn't close.

He cried after singing it @ Montreux 2013. The lyrics seemed to touch a place deep w/in him.

same here. 100%... probably his most honest and revealing song ever... it sounded like he somehow knew what was coming ...and why

Sound- and lyricwise it is a bit of an oddity among his ballads and not really a song that I listen to very often because of its production and the unrelatable lyrics. But of all his later songs this is the one song I´d like to know more about because it obviously meant a lot to him. He spoke about it on the Arsenio Hall show and he had a bit of an emotional reaction while playing it in Montreux. Makes me wonder what or who the song is really about.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

To all those complaining about the distortion... When it was first released on 3rdeyegrild.com, it was ACTUALLY distorted. I can't begin to comprehend how/ why it was released like that.

It's an amazing song on an amazing album, but my favourite version is the Montreux performance - there's a lot of passion there.

Nice choices! I'd add Revelation, Future Soul Song and The One also.

Agreed.

I don't know who was the sound engineer at the time but he just needed to be fired straight away.

Was that husband of the 3rd eye girl drummer the engineer?

I think you are referring to Josh Welton. I think his title was 'producer'...perhaps there was overlay.

Not sure I can decide that, but I'm gonna throw "Scandalous" into the mix!

Good song, but not even close to his greatest ever. I think Adore would be much closer, not sure what his greatest would be.

The screams at the end nearly ruin it and it's a tad self-conscious sounding throughout. There are quite a few songs I prefer over it from the same album.
