Bridge of Graffiti -1988-1989

SILVER STREET somewhere iN the CITY OF QUARTER NOTES

And Camille finds yet another color...

.

So I've been exploring what was to be Graffiti Bridge Bridge of Graffiti again. As well as other non GB soundtrack outtakes-that will be a different thread.
From a different view.
I'm finding I'm more interested(probably expected) in what could have been and what was in the works, over what actually was. Graffiti Bridge as released did absolutely nothing for me. It did yield Theives In the Temple. Which I really love as a 'classic' Prince song. I can even call it Purple Music. But I think there is something in me that would have enjoyed "Bridge of Graffiti" (what I'm calling the original movie concept and music tracks). I think I would love to have a movie that continued the Lovesexy new power with the band (and of course some new characters that came along).
.
I did a different thread that focused more on the Time Pandemonium/Corporate World and the film they originally had conceived. Now I'm check on this direction. I don't know if it was thought out yet, but did Sheila E have a band in preperation for her 4th album?
The released and unreleased boots/snippets that I have I'm listening through. I think it had a more Prince feel that the GB soundtrack doesn't give me...
Also reading the original script ... and trying to catch the different characters. Can U help?

Prince dreams his childlike utopia, but wraps it up in music that, by and large, belongs to the most colorful, exciting and strong in his body of work.

The original GB script Camille poem:

Once upon a time in a land called REAL,

there lived a musician whose name was CAMILLE.

Now CAMILLE was very much like I and U except 4 one thing so unavoidably true

--CAMILLE my brothers & sisters was unmistakebly BLUE.

CAMILLE was the leader of a rock n roll gang. No one could mess with him --

I mean no one could hang.

He could listen 2 our thang, then he'd play it triple time.
CAMILLE got changes that'll scramble your mind just like an egg.

But Camille - he's so lonely & blue.

His best girl, RUTHIE, left in '82.

She went off 2 find the GRAND PROGRESSION

-- a song that would change CAMILLE'S complexion.
Now every year,

he waits 4 RUTHIE's return 2 come & show him every thing that she has learned.

CAMILLE wnats 2 find GRAFFITI BRIDGE.

GRAFFITI BRIDGE - a bridge of many colors.

A bridge that leads 2 a better land than REAL.

All colors unfied where u live 4 love until u die.

Where there are no leaders and there are no stars.

RUTHIE we love u wherever u are.

Everybody's looking 4 a better land than REAL.

Everybody wants 2 find GRAFFITI BRIDGE.

Well...this is certainly a labor of love. Whatever this thread is. smile

It's been gone over a lot but GB was killed by:

- being a double album with too much filler
- A god awful embarassing movie

Pandemonium was a pretty great Time album I thought.

Have U heard Bridge of Graffiti?

.

And I agree with your 3 points.
This whole thing makes me wonder what a TIME movie could have been like. UTCM always does that to me. I can see Morris Day, Jerome/Tricky and the Time in that movie.

lol yeah it's a labor of love lol

Cat (Glover): Prince, Madonna and I were the original lineup for Graffiti Bridge. That movie was strictly written for Prince, Madonna and myself. Period. Exclamation point.

That movie was actually written on the Lovesexy Tour. Everyone in that movie replaced us. Prince actually wrote the movie and most of it was what we experienced on the Lovesexy Tour. Madonna pulled out of the movie and I left Prince; I quit. So, he had to revamp the script.

That's when he got Ingrid Chavez and everyone else. But, Mavis Staples was one person that was originally supposed to be in the movie. She was always part of the movie. Sheila E. was part of the movie. Everyone else was a replacement. I don't mean to say it that way, it sounds kind of harsh and mean, but, I know the original script.

I was in the studio with Madonna and Prince when they were discussing the script. The story was totally different. I remember they were arguing over the script, bragging on each other, talking about each other's shoes and I was laughing. Madonna said to Prince "Cat and I should have a dance battle" and Prince said (speaking in a low raspy voice) "I don't think so. I don't think you want to do that. I don't think you want to dance against Cat." That's just how he said it. I'll never forget it.
That was two powerful people, together, in the same space—and me. I was more like a bystander listening and watching.

But, the whole movie changed.

I could (4) U's? eek

Madonna was right to stay away from this movie, but who knows what it could've been like with her in it.

I'll say this again: Prince's acting in the movie is actually very good. He's surrounded by Aura (who cannot act), Morris & Jerome's slapstick schtick, and a shoe-horned "Purple Rain 2" plot.

So is the 2 HR 40 minute version a 3rd story? Or a lengthy version of the released one?

I love outtakes like this one so much-- just him screwing around on the piano, working out new stuff. This is great.

This project seems like a mess eek I really think that Prince should have brought in screenwriters and a director.Storytelling wasn’t one of his strengths.

If there had been no 'and friends' tracks and he'd insteadmqde a single CD with the brilliant pandemonium as a second disc, this would be top 10 instead of bottom 10 for me.

Yeah, I don't think the first script was as bad as the released movie.

If Prince did what you said, and did it more like the SOTT movie, then it might have worked.

I would have been more interested, if the Lovesexy band was in the movie too
