"Thunder" - sounds like what a greasy coin tastes like.

"For You" should've been treated as a segue or something else.

I don't think "P Control" was a bad opener, but I think "Endorphinmachine" set the tone better. Put it somewhere else on the record.

In general, the vast majority of them were great.

Always loved that his opening tracks were also usually the title track (he did that nearly 20 times). And if the title song wasn't the opener it was usually then the closer. Which makes me wonder if the 2nd album hadn't been self-titled would he have named it "I Wanna Be Your Lover"? Would 0(+> have been named "My Name Is Prince" or, more likely, "The Sacrifice of Victor"?

Eh, probably not. But he clearly put thought into his title tracks and their placement on the album. "Lovesexy" and "Diamonds & Pearls" are two of the few that were in the middle.

Was it released under WB? Is it so hard to understand a dissing Prince 90's topic?
Another useless dissing Prince'90 topic, just for the sake of it, when it s obvious that For You is the legitimate choice.

People noooo.....!

.

There are some lesser songs, none were the worst - there are just too many of these negative and nasty threads. Even if the first song was not that great - usually the next song or two was better.

.

Take Lovesymbol, yeah My name is Prince is Meh!, but Sexy MF and Love 2 the 9s are just amazing! Prince liked that - making you be patient and wait as each new album unveiled itself!

.

Least favourite though

.

For You - It's just a bit of acapella, although the technical voice ability is dope!

My name is Prince - Overdone and Tony's rappin, but still good in parts and its a funky song!

.

The rest are amazing, songs like I wanna be your lover, Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, ATWIAD, CTP, SOTT, Le Grind, Eye Know, the Future and Thunder are just gems.

[Edited 1/25/21 22:56pm]

Out of his classic great albums, I think "Christopher Tracy's Parade" is a bit of a sonic mess. Needed a few more passes

.

I remember being totally underwhelmed by CTP when I first heard it (in 1994). It's not bad. It's not great either. "New Position" and "I Wonder U", on the other hand... nod

Oh, no, no, no! My favourite opener in his entire catalogue. My favourite opener of any album I have ever heard, in fact.

To each their own, I guess. My vote is 'Pussy Control', though I love the screams, so maybe 'My Name is Prince', though it's got its charms, so maybe 'Can't Stop this Feeling I've Got'.

Thunder.
I've tried but just don't like it.
Maybe somewhere in The Vault
there is a version I could dig.

Yes, those are perfect, as is Under The Cherry Moon which that sequence continues into. But the first track is not quite there.

"Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" was a bit too light and showtunes-esque to open.

"Pussy Control" has some cheesy basic keyboard voices that bring it down for me.

But I love "My Name is Prince" especially the single edit. It's like comic book camp greatness, and the mix and sounds are ON POINT.

Agree. There's a likeable great song in there but it's boring and a trudge to get through. It's why I don't listen to Parade itself, just favorite songs.

For You, of course. This is not even really a song.

what the hell??? the song he chose to introduce himself to the world with???? who even are you???? if there is ever a huge bio-pic (or huge documentary on Prince's life and music that hits theaters) in the future, this song will be in the trailer.... i mean why not?... fantastic opening...then they can hit the other album-openers, similar to how Prince would do with the DAT intros in his concerts....

The Future. Duh.

Not that it's a bad song. It's just the weakest out of all of the other WB opening album tracks....

So you compare a one minute accapella "song" With a 6'30 My Name is Prince ?
MNIP contains by the way samples from IWBYL and Controversy, both openers of their respective album. So, it comes full circle.

I m not saying For You is a bad opener at all, but to answer this topic,it s by far objectively the weakest opener of the WB's albums.
Then would come Christopher's Tracy Parade as the second weakest opening.
.
There are way more musical work put in MNIP or P. Control than in For You, that s a fact.
For you is more a short accapella intro than a song.

For you is brilliant.
It is a brilliant career opener in fact, not just album opener.
You get a great introduction to prince as vocalist.

Wait a minute. Are you suggesting that the measure of a good song is its length?! Or the number of edits or amount of mixing it required? lol

Yeah.

I think it's a deliberate Jacko impression, but I think it's intended as a dig at WB - he's giving them the Prince they wanted for the sake of sales - a Jacko clone.

And then closes that album with the kiss-off The Sacrifice of Victor, that alludes to the imminent name-change.

Prince fans sometimes go to the point of no return with their unabashed love of his extended funk jams they start dealing exclusively in timestamps and edits.

The bigger revelation by ROD is that apparently acapella alone is close-but-no-ceegar not enough to constitute a real "song" in his book... You thought no other could dislike a single genre like certain org'ers disdain hip-hop, watch ROD tackle doo-wop, literally an entire genre of "intro"s...

Until this moment I never once associated the rough over the top gruff vocal of My Name is Prince with Michael Jackson... what??????????

I guess I can understand what you're talking about... but I don't know. I bet Prince could have done a very good MJ impersonation on the mic if he had been so inclined.
