It should have been done differently, basically, the music should be slower and pitched down. Prince recorded at a slower speed. (Bob George was treated differently though, there the voice was actually pitch shifted) It's more or less the same way that he recorded the guitar for a track like Hello.

Prince, for a number of years, was using the studio as an experimental instrument. Lots of tracks have stuff that is sped up, slowed down, backwards or effects being put on backwards, sometimes stuff being put out of phase or put out of time with the way it was recorded (the left and right vocals on Pop Life, for instance).

It seemed to be at a highpoint around the ATWIAD period and slowly getting less after that, but he loved playing around.

What I'm saying is, it's very hard to listen to the songs as recorded, as the effects were part of the recordings.

Lovesexy is mostly trash, it was the first album I was very disappointed with. After that it's been hit and miss. He did some great stuff, but mostly it was a mixed bag.

I was 16 when SOTT was released and had no idea about the Camille alter ego. I wondered WTF he was doing with the pitched up vocals on some songs, and to a degree, felt like he was ruining a perfectly good song. Particularly Strange Relationship. So, yeah - at the time, I would prefer to have him record the album in his normal voice. But now, knowing all that we know about the whole Camille-thing....

The alternate version of Strange Relationship that was bootlegged for years and appears on SOTT SDE is in his normal voice. Well, it might be slightly modulated, but it's not his full Camille vocal.

I prefer it. In fact, to answer the OP's original question, I do wish all of the songs were available in his normal voice.

Nope - it's exactly how it should have been. It's what makes it so great.

As others have noted, maybe he went a little too far with the voice on Cosmic Day? Hard to judge since he never released that song.
