Anyone else wish Prince would have recorded all of the SOTT album in his normal voice? I love SOTT don't get me wrong but I think it would have been even better with his real voice on all of it and NO "Camille"...

I love the whole Camille concept, so the answer is no. If anything, the inclusion of Camille songs piqued my curiosity even more about all the songs associated with it. | |

But that would negate the concept of the song - the ambiguity. Prince sung it many times live without his voice being modified over the years and those renditions are widely available. There's a truly spellbinding live version on the DVD of the New Years Eve 87 gig that accompanies physical copies of SOTT Super Deluxe and Prince performed it widely on that tour. It resurfaced during the 1997 Jam of the Year tour, the New Power Soul tour in 98 and the various Welcome 2 America tours between 2010-12. [Edited 1/24/21 18:23pm] | |

i think it depends on the tracks. songs like If I Was Your Girlfriend are an absolute NO. that song in particular is arguably Prince at his most genius. the meaning of the song gets much deeper using the Camille voice. however, i think Strange Relationship is better without the Camille voice. the W&L version we got on the vault disc 1 kicks the album version’s ass, imo songs like U Got the Look, Housequake, Strange Relationship, and Feel U Up would be just as good without the Camille voice, but they’re so fun with it that i would rather have them with the altered voice. IIWYG, Shockadelica, Rebirth of the Flesh, Crystal Ball, and Good Love wouldn’t be as good without it. i kinda wish Prince would’ve used the Camille voice on Hot Thing, but i don’t think he was feeling his Camille vibes as he was writing that one. | |

Sign 'O' The Times the album is excellent as it is, with Prince and/or Camillie on lead vocals. . However, I still wish The Prince Estate would release The Dream Factory. THAT was the album that should have been release after Parade. | |

nope - its fine how it was done.
also, dream factory doesnt need to be released. it was never finished. it was just an idea, that then became SOTT.
crystal ball you could make a case for as being a finished album, as it was submitted, but even that doesnt have artwork. plus i dont really need that as an album. you can make it yourself if you really want to.
i would like camille on vinyl though, as that had a test pressing at least, but hey, who knows if thatll happen. [Edited 1/25/21 3:09am] |

With regards to OPs question, the Camille voice really doesn't bother me. I've been listening to these songs for so long now that I'm just used to them sounding that way. I do enjoy the original version of Strange Relationship, so I'd probably enjoy the other songs just as much if they were done in his straight voice. Having said that, I think using the Camille voice on top of his falsetto was a little overkill. I'd be interested in hearing Cosmic Day without the pitch shift. | |

other ideaz: Linn drum without flange or phase pedals. Less distortion on the aggressive guitar solos. 1 album every 3 years. Shelve Around the World in a Day in '85 to begin two-year build-up for Purple Rain II instead of SOTT in '87. . gr8thread, interesting topic on how to neuter Prince's aristic inclinations in favor of a more palatable generic by-the-numbers cookie-cutter career.
