When You Were Mine Not U?

Hey all. I was building out a new play list, and it just hit me that "When You Were Mine" is not titled "When U Were Mine". Wow, I was this many years old before I realized "U" was not everywhere in P's texts. smile

Thank you.

Not sure what to say here. Congratulations? shrug

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Just wait until you read the tracklistings of the first 2 albums. It's gonna blow your socks off.

Prince appears to have started to incorporate 'U' for 'You', in song titles at least, from 1981 onwards ('Jack U Off', 'Hump U', 'Make U Mine', 'See U Dead'). Sometimes Prince also took songs from before 1981, and updated the title in the same way (e.g. 'You' and 'If I Love You Tonight').

ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

I remember when he used to post long messages using that kind of text in liner notes, on his sites, etc. It was often just obnoxiously hard to read.

Yep. After 1981, though, he occasionally skipped the u's and 2's and 4's and so on when giving away songs to others under an alias, most likely to hide his contribution more efficiently (You're My Love for example) or possibly at the artist's request (Wouldn't You Love To Love Me? was credited to Prince, so it's possible Taja simply decided writing it "Wouldn't U Love 2 Love Me?" would be silly).

He didn't start that embarrassing affectation until '81 or so, so stuff before that is just regular ol' english.
