How different were the early vs. later P[urple Rain shows

Anybody have info? were the early shows shorter, more strict ?

I know Prince didn't had Eric Leeds at the early tour dates .

Anybody attended ?

As I recall, only the piano melody in the middle was changed. He added irresistible and possessed and shortened his piano portion. Neat change. When I attended one of the Dallas shows I thought the piano section was a little long.

Take Me With U started as part of the piano set, but was later played with full band. There were a lot of different songs played during different shows, but the core set list remained the same.

What about Baby I'm A Star ?Was it 20 + minutes long from the start of the tour? And Eddie Minion was the only sax player so i guess horns only on 1 song?

The piano medley and Baby I'm a Star got longer and longer with Prince adding new songs now and then. When I was still collecting cassettes, the first shows in Detroit fit on a 90 minute tape, while the later shows needed two tapes.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

This link to the Purple Rain Tour on Prince Vault might help to see what was on the set lists throughout it.

There is a bit of a myth of the PR tour being 'repetitive' there was a lot of diversity and changes happening. The issue was of course that by the end of 1984 Prince and the band had being doing that music since 1983 not to mention the Controversy and 1999 music since 1981

.

Prince could have done much more on the tour. The off night shows and soundchecks and rehearsal 100% prove how well versed and eclectic the camp was.
.
He could have done Erotic City more, he could have done God the Love theme, Sugar Walls, had Brenda Bennett/Apollonia 6 lead a few songs 17 Days, Blue Limousine, Sex Shooter

He didn't have to act out the Darling Nikki stuff as he did, he could have gotten on guitar and he and Wendy could have done for wild stuff taking the song to a different place, they could have done so much more with Computer Blue

.

By 1985 they were adding in ATWIAD stuff, they were adding more stuff from pre-Controversy albums etc

The setlists for many early PR shows are missing.

Or rather: some are present.

The first few I clicked had setlists.

Please work from those and report back with your findings.

(hint: a nice matrix can help discern trends and differences)
