Is there TOO MUCH online fan analysis/podcasts etc.

Don't get me wrong - our hardcore fan community is franky incredible. The analysis, effort, dedication & sheer vaults of knowledge is off the scale. Some of the interviews these super fams have got are incredible, prince band members/engineers etc old & new sharing their personal expereinces has been a real revelation. BUT I can't keep up...some podcasts last for hours, the analysis of individual songs is deeeep..there is so much good content! I have started to avoid it for now with a proviso that all I need to know was said through his music.

Where do you stand - do you listen to it all, do you have time or do you avoid at all costs!

Mods- since this IS very much Prince related can you keep it on this forum rather than one of the obscure ones please!

It's not like the quality is being diluted. Listen to the ones you like and forget about the ones you dont.

I don't listen to many of them. Not because they're bad, but because of the reason(s) you stated: there are too many. Peach and Black was great, and I've listened a few times over the years. But they're no more now. They were a leader, IMO.

Some guy ran a constant reboot of a piss-poor podcast called Purple Knights, and all he ever did was the same shit over and over and over: "Let's review 1999, let's review Controversy. What do you think about 'Private Joy'?" OMG Find something new to talk about! It was a goddamn snoozefest. He's not made for radio, at all.

There are too many. And while, yes, every fan has a different opinion and view of things (eg: "The Arms of Orion" being great vs dismal), is there a space for that? Is it original and unique enough that it would garner listeners on a regular basis? Or are these content creators just trying to dip into a pie that's been long since exhausted? Are they just trying to feel like they're part of something? The ones that popped up after Prince died - are they trying to cash in? Endless theories all around.

The first time I've listened to a podcast at all was last night, Don't Ask Tig with guest Roxane Gay. It was 34 minutes and just right.

Don't get me wrong. I could sit and compare the messages in "The Future" and "Sexuality" all day, because they mirror each other with Prince's view of the world. He ideology about society, media, and politics was unwavering for a long time (ie: before his JW conversion). That's a show right there. Do I need to do a podcast about it and have on 5 guests hearing everyone out? Nope.

I don't "avoid it all costs," (which is something you do against evil or something unsavory). It's just not on my radar 99% of the time.

Margot

Prince was so prolific and enigmatic that one could spend a long time studying all of the possibilites.

I like to look into the various podcasts when I have the time and inclination.

I disagree with you about the Purple Knights and I don't understand why you would complain about any specific podcast you never know who's reading reviews and who may need tips for improvement rather than criticism. That applies to everyone not just Trivial Pursuit.

What the real issue is about Podcasts I think that people are listening but not hearing and sharing what they DO like about them.

Every time I think of doing one I think I would rather be having a conversation with the people not a listening session. Critics always exist though it's just maybe they need to be more constructive but isn't that still criticism? Maybe you are right though people talk too much.

You disagree. This affects me how, exactly?

I can say what I wish about a podcast, or anything. Purple Knights is the same shit every single time they attempt to relaunch it. It's limper than a wet noodle.

In fact, the only Prince related podcast I listened to was the ones from the Prince estate and The Current about SOTT SDE. I wasn't going to hear any of those interviews and insight on Purple Knights, whose host can't put together a line of interesting questions to save their life. It's the same shit every time. BORING.

What does member count have to do with anything?! You think we should be concerned about who reads anyone's comments on here? If they can't deal with it, that's their burden, not mine.

I wish we had a count of the posters with the most posts thank God I'd lose THAT contest!

PURPLEIZED probably wishes you hadn't got up in your feelings and derailed their thread about podcasts.

BACK to the topic...

I believe for Prince fans, it can be a lot. Those of us here who followed his career closely, know a lot of the inner working stories, etc., can often feel like, "Well duh, I knew that," all the time on these podcasts. I suppose it depends on what a listener is looking for with any particular podcast. Do they want a group of people just sucking Controversy's dick, or do they want a group that finds Prince's early social and political leanings in "Sexuality," "Annie Christian," and "Ronnie Talk 2 Russia" a topic worth exploring. I mean, podcasts have to go beyond, "'Private Joy' was the first Linn drum machine song, and he put it thru guitar pedals..." or "Andre Cymone really wrote 'Do Me, Baby.'" Yes, YES, we know. Tell us something we don't know.

I don't believe podcasts should be just fact-finding missions or a resume of the album. They should provide some analysis, a historical context, and the timeliness of the song/album in question. ("Sign O The Times" is a great example of that, and Susannah has told that store on a couple of great podcasts including the one from the Prince estate).

Margot was right, "one could spend a long time studying all of the possibilites." With that said, there will always be a Prince podcast as long as there are podcasts in which to talk about Prince.

I always thought Peach and Black was boooop and I don't think I listened to it more than once because the podcasters told some booop beeeep story about being taken somewhere in a limousene after a show by some booop beeeep enterouge being told that they were basically forced to talk about the show they had just witnessed. Pardon my French but get the beeeeep outta here. How YOU doing?

While it might be true that all publicity is good publicity, who's publicizing who? The fact anyone have has had the gumption to produce the show at all is something to be talked about IMO. And now we're just talking about people who talk about people. There's a lot of code.... I could write.... but I already $$$KNOW$$$ my words are beautiful, thankuverymuch.

I'm glad you believe for Prince fans Trivial. We're oh soooo helpless and alone you know. I'm glad you don't believe for Prince fans Trivial you're in good company.

I never saw such good doing and maybe it's time to make another forum format site and call it "lines and columns dot org" since the new playground for the NPG doesn't receive enough grades or accolades. Sike! This forum IS where it's at so STAY tuned y'all!
