I like the album just fine the way it is, but a single-disc set released in October 1987 (when sales for major releases are higher), say, would have been a considerably bigger hit in North America. Make 'em wait a little longer, after U2 and Guns'n'Roses' chart-peaks sort of passed in the autumn, and then hit 'em with this single album:

SIDE 1 (27 minutes)

1. Sign O' The Times

2. Housequake

3. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

4. Starfish & Coffee

5. Hot Thing

6. If I Was Your Girlfriend

SIDE 2 (28 minutes)

7. U Got The Look

8. Strange Relationship

9. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man

10. The Cross

11. It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night

Except your single disc set is a double LP ( 55 minutes long)
.
Seriously guys...Everyone knows the length of a vinyl.
.
Susan Rogers explains in the SOTT deluxe book she already had hard time to put It on the first side because it was already too long with its 23 minutes.
She had to give up and put it on the second side.

Someone posted a link to a lengthy article about SOTT maybe a year ago. The writer suggested the last two tracks were surplus. I agree. I also think perhaps It or Hot Thing should be removed as they both do the same job. Can’t decide which though.

Adore and Beautiful Night a surplus?
Adore is the most streamed and airplayed song of the album in the US.
It s like you were saying Purple Rain was in surplus of the eponymous album.

Yeah, i’m aware it’s loved. And for that reason I’m happy it’s on there.

But personally it’s never done anything for me whatsoever. And I’m someone who scratches my head in disbelief every time a Prince fan disses The Arms Of Orion.

Er... not really. A 55-minute single-disc album by 1987 would be nothing special.

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan was 50+ minutes in 1963, and Highway 61 Revisited was 51-52 minutes in 1965. The Rolling Stones' Aftermath was 52-53 minutes in 1966.

As for 1987, The Joshua Tree was 50-51 minutes. Appetite For Destruction was 54 minutes. Whitney was over 53 minutes.

Yes, the idea that single vinyl albums can only be 40 mins is just wrong
