It is simply about storage under your control or stoarge under someone else's control.

In this age we can use any pluggable device to store data on, if we can simply play stuff when inserted.

Call it a USB-stick, SD-card, harddisk, etc.

Making a fuss about CDs, vinyl and cassettes is a bit shallow then.
