The first time Purple Rain was ever played

Here is an article about Purple Rain and a clip of the first ever performance at First Avenue. Maybe some of you have seen it, maybe not (I haven't, I only heard the audio), so here it is. Imagine being there and hearing this for the first time...

If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Thanks. I never want to ever hear that song again now

cry and it's because I'm never going to get a good enough cry to not feel that way about it.

Because of psychoacoustics.

'We love you very much.Good night.' That was wonderful to watch! Can't remember ever seeing that short purple coat before. I'm glad that Prince took out that verse about money as it really doesn't add to the song. Funny that he was including the kiss to Wendy's cheek at this early point in the performance of the song. Thanks for posting this!!

This live performance of Purple Rain is the version on the album (edited of course). Awesome to have this...beautiful to watch. Hard to watch sometimes though.

I tear up just hearing the start of the music. Purple Rain is a hard one for me to listen to now.

Since a soundboard type audio came out of this show, someone needs to overdub it onto the video, so cut out those warbly parts.

It's interesting, when watching that whole concert, to see the audience really react to older songs, but just go along for the ride of stuff like "Computer Blue" or "Purple Rain." They songs, at that point, so out of pocket for Prince and what he was sorta known for, that they are just dumbfounded. They don't know how to react or what to do. I don't think that much bothered him either, because he had his eye on the bigger picture. It was a picture that was already well under construction, even beyond things we've read to this point.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

Indeed, therer's also a video on Dailymotion of this where it gets analyzed and the edits are pointed out.

It's so cool looking at that audience, none of them knowing how historic it would be. They never imagined people watching it nearly 40 years later.

Those people in the audience had never heard that music before . . . didn't know any of the words, or what was about to happen to Prince's career. They were all still in "1999" mode.

I read that Prince also planned on using the live version of Let's Go Crazy from this charity event on the actual album, but wasn't crazy about the lack of audience response on that one.

MarcelS67, thank you. I've seen that video. No words...Those in the audience that night witnessed something very special even though it wasn't known at the time. I consider Purple Rain downright SACRED especially this "debut" live performance that was ultimately used on the album.
