princes sparsest songs

Was thinking what my ideal version of what princes response to hip hop would really be (been listening to old rap lately while thinking of sott) and I think an album of really sparse songs would be perfect.. if you were listening to mid to late 80s rap, it was usually very bare bones in arrangement. Prince often though couldnt help adding more and more sometimes, esp as he went into the 90s.

I think an album like this would look something like-
Sign o the times
Kiss
Big tall wall (the second version)
Forever in my life

What else?

Did someone insult someone? Why would it get pulled?

two threads about it have been pulled. to be fair, the 2nd one had a youtube link but that easily could've been edited out out as opposed to pulling the whole thing. the first one i don't think broke any rules at all, unless there was something i didn't read prior to it getting pulled.

Black Album beats are very hip-hop inspired, he just happens to be making fun of/deriding hip-hop over them....

"Bob George", "Dead on It". Totally legit as just beats.

Right? What was that all about?! Since when can we not discuss something? Goddamn, it's free speech, a human right.

There's that one thread in site discussion that says Freedom of Speech is not guaranteed here and I believe it.

Though the lack of any sort of mentions about this stuff is just wack af.

Same thing happened last year when 1999 SDE leaked and we weren't allowed to talk about it until it released. LOL.

We're still under the same restrictions for over a decade? As if the estate cares about this stuff as much as P did?

dead on it actually kind of sucks once you listen to the lyrics. just embarassing. but the beat and the guitar are great. bob george is also excellent. like prince doing gangsta rap.

I think I have a different defintition of "sparse" than you do. All the ones I think of fall in the "so basic they're barely songs" category so my mind goes to stuff like:

Solo

Orgasm

Papa

Wedding Feast

I'd forgotten how many tracks on Come are barely even songs. Which is a shame because most of the songs that ARE there are really good.

...

But you seem to be looking for fully realized tracks that are undercooked and raw. Like David Byrne doing Psycho Killer in the Stop Making Sense movie. YEa?

Someone brought up Bob George. That's a good one.

Lemme think...

Don't Play Me, Here on Earth (ONA Piano), Do U Lie, Walk Don't Walk

One of my favest Prince songs everrrrr; often, Prince would come up with the best stuff in his career when he teamed up with other people, we have Power Fantastic as another example.

But this, the way he uses his voice as an instrument; hauntingly beautiful, at least, to me. I hear it's a no-no to many other peeps. Personally, I wish Prince and David Henry Hwang had done more of this.

Dirty Mind deserves mention, perhaps as a stand-in for the whole album. Keys, guitar, bass, drums, a couple vocal layers. I'm no expert but I'm guessing it could fit on an 8 track.

"Let's Pretend We're Married" might have some bass on it but it sounds like a LINN, synths, and vocal layers to me. More minimal than some of what is mentioned above.

Not as minimal as some of the entries mentioned above, but I Wonder U and Kiss.

Was thinking along the same lines with the thread title. Solo and the like were first to come to mind. Also some on One Nite Alone.

So agree, Herb4. You had me at Had U.

Thank you for this thread!

Been thinking about this since Astasheiks posted that fun gift/talent thread, and the thread headed to hip hop talk.

Some of the first "sparse" things that popped into my mind might not be hip hop material. I dunno. What do you think of the One Nite Alone album, both related to this and in general?
