Some amazing jazz work
You'll find the best most heavy tracks that the Revolution recorded,
the ones that we thought were too far gone back in the 80s
you'll find the more psychodelic rock version of the Time
you'll find the really erotic Prince the really erotic sensual Prince
you'll find the future

Kurt: What's going to happen to all that stuff? Will it ever come out?

... . Oh yes, I'll give it away...

Like everyone I'm always interested in hearing the outakes/other songs etc from Prince's career but should we be listening to them?

I'm pretty sure Prince wouldn't approve of us hearing unfinished ideas or sketches-I know as a musician too,I wouldn't want anyone hearing my unfinished or unpolished material.

I do what's called production music for a living-basically music for tv and film and i'd say I write about 90-100 tracks a year for that but there's also another 40 or so that don't get used beacause I don't think they're good enough.

Now I know that's not the same as actual songs-they're even more personal but there's definitely a reason why all his other songs got left off the albums.

I really love that the albums are getting remastered because I want to hear Prince with the best possible sound and am intrigued by the outakes/demos(although I do think there's only a handful that come anywhere close to being as strong as the released material) but at the same time it doesn't quite sit right for me.

Anyone else or is it just me?!

It's a fair question. Do U think U are a better judge than P himself on what meets his standards for release? There's a reason vault songs are in the vault. Do U want to second guess P's judgement? If so, I am in awe of your arrogance...

ForceofNature

It isn't neccesarily about "meeting the standards" of what Prince officially released in album form, but rather presenting a fuller picture of the full scope of what Prince was up to in any given era. Quality is subjective, to me there are many songs that are just as strong as what were on the albums but stylistically wouldn't fit on said albums - but them seeing the light of day is helpful in terms of cementing historically Prince's artistry

It comes down to a matter of personal choice. Should I be listening to these songs? And the answer for me is hell yeah. I mean after listening to the bootlegs and leaked stuff over the years, how could this be a worse sin?

Are you kidding me? Weak, trash, cringeworthy?!? Absolutely not! Maybe SOTT Deluxe isn't your personal favorite, but that doesn't mean it's considered trash.

He could have destroyed all the material if he didn't want us to listen to it. But he knew exactly what was going to happen after he left us. He left all the material there, for us.

While he was alive the songs weren't released, so i guess these are not part of his official discography, just posthumous releases.

Relax.

Is just the same for his streaming issues, he wanted more cash from Spotify, Apple. That's why he made business with Tidal. But if his family is ok with Spotify payment then what's wrong about it?

a lot of these outtakes have issues that left them on the cutting room floor .. its not that they are bad songs or prince would not want them heard .. they just werent up to snuff for what he was putting out at the time or even for his own personal satisfaction .. he kept them as references to consider rerecording or tinkering with further .. some clearly had issues that could not be resolved so we get some frankenstien version .. or wally with a fucked up vocal track .. i dont think prince hated these songs or was embarassed .. if he wasn't prince we would have had a 30 disk deluxe set with every burp and hiccup but in the same way he wouldn't leave the house without a pound of grease on his face ..

I know fans that believe Prince didn't release the stuff for a reason, because he didnt want to. So releasing it now goes against his wishes. I know he wouldn't have wanted the R-rated stuff released.

Exactly, no one is forcing anyone to listen to these songs, Prince is gone and doesn't care anymore.

.

it's simply you, mrjj71.

.

as CONTROLLING & as MANIPULATIVE & JEDI-MIND-TRICKING Prince was for most of his career ?

.

after all the bullshit lawsuits he brought upon his fans - in a TOTALLY POINTLESS attempt to literally have FULL "control" over every note of his music, every photo or image or video ever done of him ? ? ?

.

hear me now & believe me later :

as hard as I might try - not that I even want to, in the 1st place - I could not muster

1 milligram

of worry or concern of "guilt" about me me finding or obtaining or listening to any of Prince's music.

.

if he really wanted to have that much "control" over his work, he should have released literally

1 song

every year.. & then keep those masters in a raggedy old suitcase.. with instructions for whichever surviving "minion" to completely burn/destroy/obliterate said masters.

.

I believe we both know better, though, mrjj71.

.

for that extremely rare person as uniquely brilliant & prolific & of such prodigious talent as Prince..

all he could do was let ALL of that music flow out of him. he had to know that some/most/all of it would eventually be released in some form or another.

.

the Bible advises that us mere mortals/humans should not be too focused on or attached to the things of this world. this same advisement could be applied to Prince & his HYPER-OBSESSIVE mentality about his music.

.

if I gave you, mrjj71, a dollar for every Prince (or "associated artist") song that I "procured by whatever means available".. you could seriously take at least the 5 years off from your job - whatever that might be.

.

if it keeps you afloat to wonder about or stress over your "feelings" about "what Prince would think" about his forever-admiring, always thirsty/hungry/starving for "hidden" music that he never officially released for whatever reason..

.

if you will sleep better, wrestling with the "immorality" of that..

.

then, bruh - knock yourself out.

.

then please excuse me while I go back to finding/enjoying as many of Prince's "hidden gems" as I can.

I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..
