To the Estate's credit, the mix is genuine not remade.

Yeah, I think the horns are just too forward in the mix. If they were more subtle, that would make a helluva difference.

Yeah but that's on Prince, there was nothing to do about it. I mean we can't complain that what Prince left is what it is. I mean we can, but there's no point. But I agree: it's a very odd mix, at first I was convinced it was a Bolas recreation (same with Blanche BTW).

The Blanche drum panning was kinda lame to me at first but now I dig it. Especially in the context of other bluesy instrumental shit they were doing at the time (from The Flesh onward). It's still ab acquired taste but I think it's nice!

I'm gonna miss these two songs on a Parade Deluxe. They should have saved these two songs for that. neutral

While I don't really care for the song, it's revisitation definitely fits in the Dream Factroy era.

All My Dreams
One of many bootleg clasics on here. While I think it really deserves its place on a Parade Deluxe, it was really nice to hear it in this quality and pick up on the things I hadn't previously noticed, due to the bootleg quality.

If they have any sense in them, they'll put the orchestral version of AMD on that one, it remains one of the most intruiguing uncirculating outtakes.

I think the 7" Mix of Crystal Ball is a fun addition but on another disc should have been the original version of the song (you know, the one without the orchestration), but having the Dream Factory bootleg that includes it, I don't mind too much. razz.

The longer version of Strange Relationship was a nice surprise, but is the Sign O' The Times album version an edit of this, or is this an extended version of the album version? confuse We all know this is not the Original Version of the song, but it might just be the original unedited version of this version of the song. razz

This early version of Big Tall Wall is great. It doesn't have the punch of the second version, but I still enjoy it. biggrin

According to Pvault (thus Duane) the version on SOTTSDE is the unedited 07/01/85 overdubbed version, the one on DF (the bootleg) is an edit of that one probably from March 1986, and the final SOTT version was remixed in late Oct or early Nov 86. http://www.princevault.co...lationship

1. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (1979 version) - I'm glad to have this one but I prefer the album version
2. Teacher, Teacher (1985 version) - It's ok but not a favorite

4. Can I Play With U? (featuring Miles Davis) - Really like this one
5. Wonderful Day (original version) - Unfortunately it's not that good
6. Strange Relationship (original version) - Amazing
7. Visions - It's nice
8. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (with horns) - I like this one but prefer the album version
9. Witness 4 The Prosecution (version 1) - Great but version 2 is much better
10. Power Fantastic (live in studio) - Love this song
11. And That Says What? - No
12. Love And Sex - Pretty good
13. A Place In Heaven (Prince vocal) - It's decent
14. Colors - Nice
15. Crystal Ball (7" mix) - Pointless
16. Big Tall Wall (version 1) - I prefer version 2 but still enjoy this one.
17. Nevaeh Ni Ecalp A - Terrible
18. In A Large Room With No Light - I know lots of people like this song but I can't stand it.

OK my two cents after a cursory listen to each vault disc while cleaning and shit.

I tink this is the weakest disc of the 3 for me, which is not not say it's bad, but I think I'll edit it down.

Most of that feeling is that the songs I like best I've heard before (Witness, All My Dreams, Power Fantastic, Large Room) but it's great to have them in this quality finally so no complaints.

I might be one of the few that likes the horns on TBODP, even though I prefer the album version.

And I'm not sure I've slept on and never heard Big Tall Wall before but that track is cool. I've heard OF it just never actually heard it somehow.

I'm gonna have to give this set the headphone test real soon, which always opens doors and windows into Prince's songs but color me satisfied overall.

So cool to have this. I think the Estate did a great job on the whole set. The book is really well done.

...

UNrelated:

I just realized SoTT had a smalle booklet with it too (I got the CD version) so as I was ornganizing my shit today it was cool to stumble onto that.

Man...I haven't listened to Large Room With No Light in a good minute and to hear it with this sound quality is just

*Chef Kiss*

But, god damn. That's one of the best outros Prince has ever written.

For all the songs he's done that go on forever, he ends this one that fast? That background quire or whatever that (ahahahahaha....yeah) shit is called, that hard piano and the sheer wall of sound that closes that number....? I could listen to that ending for a good while. What a crescendo. Wish there was an extended version of THIS ONE more than anything.

Reminds me of In This Bed I Scream where they get all Nine Inch Nails with it and then it just...fades out.

While comparing my bootleg copies with the released versions, I noticed the L/R channels have been reversed on All My Dreams. It's most noticeable when Wendy is speaking.

Love and Sex is way too slow. Could this be a mistake? At this speed it doesn't make any sense.

Speed it up at least to 125% and then go back to 100% and you feel that it is not just in comparison to the boot, also it just doesn't work that way. I think it's a technical error and was never intended to be this way.

What do you think?

He re-recorded it with Sheila in a different style, with a different speed.

Tapes with Prince's unreleased music were disseminated a variety of ways be it by band members, label or production employees, or Prince himself. Then they made their way to the streets with a quickness (the boots for Charade, TBA, and Crystal Ball were all out within a year or two).

Prince decides to wage war against a large part of his online fanbase and it embroiled the Org and others in a lawsuit so the why's and the how's of acquiring bootlegs is now forbidden here as it is perpetually watched by Prince's Purple People Eater Machine.

1. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (1979 version) - interesting to hear a Prince-era outtake, really like this.
2. Teacher, Teacher (1985 version) - Love this and the 1982 version
3. All My Dreams - Classic - one of his best songs ever
4. Can I Play With U? (featuring Miles Davis) -Like his vocals on this, never cared for this song before but like this more fleshed-out version
5. Wonderful Day (original version) - Prefer the W&L version but like hearing his original version
6. Strange Relationship (original version) - Love this, really stretches out
7. Visions - Gorgeous piano from Lisa as always
8. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (with horns) - kinda like the horns especially towards the end
9. Witness 4 The Prosecution (version 1) - Great song, really rocks out
10. Power Fantastic (live in studio) - Interesting to hear but not a patch on the released vocal
11. And That Says What? - Cool little track
12. Love And Sex - Not fussed on Sheila's version, this doesn't change my mind
13. A Place In Heaven (Prince vocal) - Cute but nothing special
14. Colors - Nice
15. Crystal Ball (7" mix) - interesting to hear the edit of one of my all-time favourite tracks, shame the other versions of this weren't included
16. Big Tall Wall (version 1) - Love the 60's pysch-pop take on this. The lyrics? hmmm...
17. Nevaeh Ni Ecalp A - I've reversed this and it's a nice W&L take on the song
18. In A Large Room With No Light - Again, one of his best songs ever. So good that it's finally seen the light of day.

Love and Sex was one of my most anticipated songs on this set. I loved the Sheila E version. Before I heard the song I knew it was a more guitar heavy version as reported here on the org prior to the release.

I was still a little shocked when I heard this version.

Still not sure which version I prefer. I do miss the guitar solo that appears in the sheila version but love the power chords of this version.

I'm getting more and more used to this version now and it's my of my favourite songs from the 3 vault disks.

I officially listened to Love & Sex all the way through.

This is the one that was supposed to be for Sheila E?

This is one song that sound really LOUD, like trying to listen to a song on your phone by turning it up while at a music concert.

Is it the bass?

According to Pvault (thus Duane) the version on SOTTSDE is the unedited 07/01/85 overdubbed version, the one on DF (the bootleg) is an edit of that one probably from March 1986, and the final SOTT version was remixed in late Oct or early Nov 86. http://www.princevault.co...lationship

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the album version of Strange Relationship uses the Camille vocal. Whereas, the vault track uses his regular voice.
