I can't help but notice a slight difference in the way the first note hits on Visions between this version, the version on Lisa's 1991 LP and the uncirculating and supposedly genuine DF3 configuration. It's a very slight difference in the mix/edit, but noticeable.

I'm really glad you brought this up because it's been bothering me. The low F has been cut off in the SDE, so that you just hear the decay of the note. Really annoying, especially when one considers this the first track of Dream Factory -- I'm almost certain P and Lisa would have wanted that low note to start everything off.

It seems too sloppy to be an accident. I can only hope there is such an edit in the vault and that they chose to use/reconstruct it on purpose for whatever reason. I mean just imagine if that was an accident?? eek eek

Love & Sex is really interesting.

It's reminds me of Fantasy Is Reality from George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic) where it encompasses whatever form the artist is currently in.

And That Says What? Very funky and fun.

Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (Horn Version), actually pretty cool once you get past the beginning. The version they went with is a stone cold classic but this version wasn't as bad as I was expecting from the podcast sample. Leeds did an admirable job. It just needed more editing.

Otherwise, no real big surprises in Part 1 but it felt like a fun collection of tracks.

Me Howe should read and understand that what we needed was not a random sde selection of tracks (and the choice is questionnable), but sott remastered + Camille + DF + CB. What a waste.... Vault discs are made like collection of bootlegs. Can barely listen to most of them. Incoherent...

If you can barely listen to these tracks which are by and large amazing I would say it is user error! Of course there was no way we can resonably expect Camille+DF+CB, way too many redundancies to be had in a singular box set.

I don't HATE the version of "Wonderful Day", but I much prefer the bootleg version.

I think I’m noticing a pattern of not using versions of tracks that were on DF, CB, or Camille...however slight. Keeps them fresh, and makes tracks on an actual release of DF, CB, or Camille less redundant.

Visions slight difference
Rebirth with extra outro extra lyrics
Wonderful day (W&L version ) is extended, not album version

It's as great as it can be given that we're familiar with almost every song in one form or another. As with 1999 SDE I did not expect to be blown away the way I'd have been with 45 totally unknown songs. What I expected and what happened with 1999 was to listen to it often, notice détails I'd missed at first, let the new songs/versions grow on me and have a lot of fun. I've only listened to the SOTT outtakes it twice today, it's 3 hours and a half all at once, so 7 hours of Prince today.. . It's gonna take a while to digest it all. But yeah, it's a great collection for fans.

Can I Play With U is lossy-sourced.

Looks like Visions has been given a haircut (probably to eliminate hiss).

Colours is also a bit of an oddity. hmmm

Exactly.

I have bets on which are Bolas mixes and which are originals.

At the back of the book it lists the tracks that Niko Bolas has “mixed”! I’ve just left the house after ripping the CDs otherwise I’d put the details up.

Please do so whenever you have a moment (or someone else) yes

The book states that:
ICNTTPOYM (1979 version)
Power Fantastic (Live in studio)
A Place In Heaven (Prince vocal)
Eggplant (original Prince vocal)
Forever In My Life (early vocal run-through)
Crucial (Alternative lyrics)
There’s Something I Like About Being Your Fool
Mixed by NIKO BOLAS
There may or may not be something coming!

Interesting. I don't have the ears or analysis software knowledge to identify the sources. but when I heard 'Visions' I did think it wasn't as clear as I remember from the Eroica CD, but I haven't done a comparison.

Thanks. For "Crucial", it was semi-obvious to me that it was mixed by Niko (the kind of reverb that was used, the way the strings are mixed as databank noticed, etc.).

"Interestingly", the "scream" you can hear at the very beginning of all bootlegged versions of "A Place in Heaven" (Lisa's version and Prince's version including the "environmental record" monologue), as well as on Lisa's version on the SOTT SDE is not present on Niko's mix. hmmm

Gosh, I even shock myself sometimes.

None of those surprise me, as they pretty much all have his trademark mixing characteristics (hard-panning, mono reverb and unbalanced background vocals). I will give him credit for A Place In Heaven though - that one is done very well.

1. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (1979 version)

It's quaint. Nice to have experienced it but the final version and more so movie version are just sublime
2. Teacher, Teacher (1985 version)

Meh. Decent filler track
3. All My Dreams

absolute masterpiece
4. Can I Play With U? (featuring Miles Davis)

when you temper your expectations it's a cool track
5. Wonderful Day (original version)

mediocre
6. Strange Relationship (original version)

Dig it because it's so different than album version
7. Visions

cute
8. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (with horns)

prince made the right choice on the horns
9. Witness 4 The Prosecution (version 1)

funkerific. great
10. Power Fantastic (live in studio)

delicious better than other version
11. And That Says What?

and?
12. Love And Sex

Meh. Decent filler track
13. A Place In Heaven (Prince vocal)

lovely
14. Colors

cute
15. Crystal Ball (7" mix)

pointless and annoying cinsidering what version they should have incl
16. Big Tall Wall (version 1)

weak obvious outtake grade material
17. Nevaeh Ni Ecalp A

superluous
18. In A Large Room With No Light

brilliance

Love and Sex is a real busy mess isn't it? I can't believe he would have allowed a mix like this to come out. I think I prefer the Sheila version of this one. It sounds like the first draft of the whole Adonis & Bathsheba -> Crucial -> Adore saga.

Love the version of Love and Sex, it sounds so different to the version with Sheila E as it's much slower but I think it's amazing with all the multi track vocals, reminds me quite a bit of Crucial in style. I like both versions but it's almost like they are totally different songs!

And That Says What? is funky and crazy as hell smile

Also great to have Inalargeroomwithnolight, probably one of his greatest ever songs but to me he is still 100% saying 'dick' and not 'drink', many people said it was a fault on the sound of the boot but I hear it here too!
