The remaster sounds great. More punch to each track; finally.

The outtakes, largely should have remained unheard. A handful are interesting; some really good but the remaining are trash.

What a ridiculous comment considering how much praise has been heaped on the vault tracks. Ridiculous...

Holy shit, Slow Love is transformed. If you told me this was an alternate take with a proper orchestra added instead of blurry background synths, I'd believe you. Slow Love was always the song I felt I probably wouldn't give the time of day to if it weren't on SOTT, but it's completely rejuvenated here. Yesterday I put it on out-of-sequence because I really wanted to hear it again. That's never happened before.

My thoughts exactly...was surprised how much the little details added to this song

I know some opinions aren't allowed on here but I agree mostly with you.

Trash may be a bit harsh of a term but there's only a few tracks that would deserve to be on an actual Prince lp here.

All my dreams and Power fantastic are really the only ones for me...alot of the others (and i'm going to get crucified on here for saying but......) are a bit dull

But.....I am very thankful to be getting the original record in much better quality (was much more excited for that)

Trash was too harsh of a word given the talent playing on each track. However I do feel a majority should have remained unheard; the set is interesting but I won’t be revisiting many of the outtakes.

I'm wondering if anybody ever noticed this: I listened to the title track on the remaster. At 30 seconds, when Prince sings 'died', there is a clicky sound. I heard it first in the mp3, then checked Spotify, it's there too. I'm thinking this can't be! An ugly click on the remaster!

Then I checked the original release, it's there as well. Which in some way is a relief. But at the same time, could they have fixed this? It obviously is on one of the master tracks. It's nothing major, especially since I never noticed this on the original recording to begin with.

yes indeed. not the only mistake on this release. however, i don't hear the click on original release

for me...

Purple rain remaster
The dance electric
Love and sex
Our destiny/Roadhouse garden
Wonderful ass
1999 remaster
Posessed '82 version
Moonbeam levels
Sign 'o' the times remaster
Power Fantastic (although prefer the version on the hits/b-sides)
All my dreams
and possibly Emotional pump, although i'm going off that .

It's no coincidence that the best tracks(to me anyways) are on the Purple rain remaster-the one he was around to oversee.

It's just a shame he's not here to oversee the others

OK, that's better...i think the word 'trash' just pissed me off smile To me, there are songs on here (many) that could have become another Prince classic. I dont' think i'm alone in that opinion. I do agree, there are some that probably could have remained in the vault but i"m happy to hear them (e.g. Blanche, Wonderful Day). To me, Prince could have chilled out and released the following in 1988 or 1989 and continued gaining the critical acclaim..

Promise to be True

Wally

Walk In Glory

All My Dreams

Power Fantastic

Train

The Ball

Adonis

Crucial

Rebirth of the Flesh

Big Tall Wall

This is an increcible set. Despite all the amazing material, I'm still returning to the remaster of the original album. So damn good.

Clearly "trash" was insulting and carried little meaning in that context.

.

This said, I fail to see why these songs should have "remained unheard" because you won't be revisiting this set (that's the causality you establish in your post). The world doesn't revolve around you, I'm sorry to break it to you.

.

Certainly, these outtakes collections aren't aimed at someone who wishes to discover Prince's music, neither are they supposed to redefine the world's perception of his music. As one orger once wisely said, it's unlikely the vault contains anything that will drastically alter our perception of Prince's music. This is the premise one should accept when listening to these outtakes collections.

.

For the hardcore fans and serious music afficionados in general, they give a deeper perspective of P's creative process, showing us what concepts and sounds he toyed with behind the curtains. In a way, these outtakes fill the gaps the same way the side projects (which aren't also usually known by casual listeners) allow us to get a wider perspective of his musical evolution. In that sense, even a cassette recording of Prince in his bedroom in 1976, the like of which we have on bootlegs, is interesting and should be heard. Beyond the pleasure eevery fan may or may not get from listening to each track, based on their personal tastes, these recordings are first and foremost a valuable document.

.

This posthumous catalogue is a great addition for those who are interested in it. Those who aren't are presumably expected to pass and enjoy their "Very Best Of Prince" compilation, not complain that the material should have stayed in the vault. This is unheard of nod eek

Prince did not oversee the outtakes, just the horrible remaster.

As much as I enjoy discovering/listening to new Prince tracks from the Vault, I agree that a majority of them are weaker than the songs that ended up on Prince's original albums. Only a few of them are at the same level of his released tracks IMHO. Still fun to explore and listen to though!

So for me these SDL sets are mostly about the remastered original tracks and the b-sides. The good Vault tracks are a nice bonus. The remasters of the original 1999 and SOTT tracks are pretty much perfect, Purple Rain not so much unfortunately. The vault tracks on PR DL were amongst the strongest though, so that makes up for the poor remaster of the PR album. Hopefully one day we will see a proper remaster of PR, until that day I will be listening to the great 2013 HD Tracks version.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Thankfully so! And ultra thankful because like the person above me said, this is the best remaster of a 20+ year old album I have heard in a long while too, very very rare to have a remaster that doesn't compress the heck outta everything lol

I listened to the new remaster, heard the click, then checked the original and it wasn’t there. Then remembered I replaced some of the 80s albums on my iPod with the Foefur remasters several years ago. Including Sign.

Foefur got rid of it somehow! (Edit: or prepared it in such a way it wasn’t picked up)

I am not sure ...need to think about it. The sound on Prince records typically are no where near the best sounding albums. However, the more I listen to this remaster, the more impressed I am. Right now, I would say it is the best Prince sounding Prince record but my gut tells me this is actually....big league. So damn good

I read something in this BBC6 article I never came to think off...

Why the colours 'Peach And Black' were so obviously reffereing to:

'Susannah=peach and Prince=black''...

-

''Colour You Peach And Black...'' The cover shoot :

Sign O' The Times introduced Prince's new peach-and-black colour scheme (peach representing Susannah, and black representing Prince). The iconic cover was shot by Jeff Katz, at just 24 hours notice."

-

https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-54203180

-

Is this invented by BBC6 or did anyone ever stated that as a fact ?

Pretty cool little piece of knowlegde as I come to think of it though, if it is true.
