Unreleased collection

So I pulled the plug and deleted my entire collection of unreleased songs yesterday. I’m tired of not having the joy of hearing these songs fresh for the first time. I always wondered in the twenty years of collecting these songs if the day would come when I would regret getting the pristine quality track only to be slightly let down because I’ve already played it a hundred times over the years. Those days have now come with all these great releases. Never again! lol

How will this help if you’ve already heard them?

True, it really won’t, I guess it will just keep me from listening anymore so won’t be as tired of them? You know what, you’re absolutely right. I should have never acquired them in the first place, but it was just to damn tempting!

It will be a mild reset I feel? Like they won't be released soon anyway so it would be nice to come back to the songs in perfect quality.

i deleted some of the poor quality outtakes and decided i would let the estate to their thing and enjoy that .. its working out good so far .. manic monday .. big tall wall .. pnm 83 .. large room .. all sounded like shit and ever since they have been released in improved quality .. otherwise if decent enough quality such as many crystal ball songs, its worth keeping because the estate also tends to release different mixes than what we had .. so u still get the shiny new car feel even on a song u have already heard .. best of both worlds .. i am looking forward to the acoustic thieves demo as it is one of my faves but sounds like shit and i deleted it .. fingers crossed .. also the estate does a good job of giving us something new even if we already have a lot of bootlegs and seems to be doing well even with the live shows they include ..

Yes!! One of my absolute favorites!! I just have hopes that someone out there has it in pristine quality and will leak it at some point. I usually wouldn’t keep an unreleased song if the quality was really bad, but that one I made an exception for. Definitely the most disappointing thing about 1999 SDE...

I think we are far more likely to get the Vanity 6 and 1988 remixed versions of Extraloveable before the 1982/83 versions are officially released, if ever.

I understand the idea, but I wouldn't delete anything from my collection. I like having that stuff, not necessarily to listen to it, but as reference material.

.

As some have said in this thread, there's no guarantee everything will ever be released. Yes, Extraloveable and Lust U Always come to mind, but I would bet we won't hear the pre-Revolution rough mix of "Witness 4 The Prosecution" on an official release anytime soon. Yes, I know, it probably was never supposed to be released, so it doesn't count as a "real version" of the song, whatever that means, but I've listened to it countless times and it's still my favorite version. So I "need" it in my collection. I can think of many examples where the version/mix we're familiar with will probably never be released, at least in the short term.

.

Also, the fact that I have something in my collection doesn't mean I will listen to it. I haven't heard the Gangster Glam remixes in ages and just reading about them is not enough to make me want to listen to them. So I don't need to delete them. biggrin

.

Finally, and this is an idea that comes up regularly around here: we're not getting any younger. I don't want to wait for an official release of my favorite outtakes/concerts/rehearsals/whatever. I'll just listen to them, from time to time, and if an official release happens, then, fine, I will probably enjoy the sound quality upgrade (or get mad at the fact that the mix is different...).

what he said! There are still differences between Prince's rough mixes and these remixed treats we are getting from the estate which I am still looking forward to smile

I’m not the only one! Was thinking this same thing. Not so much the older, 10th generation tape dub stuff that’d been circulating forever, but the more recent leaks like Coco boys, emotional pump, etc.

I don't delete anything, only because I don't like incomplete compilations. I do get where you're coming from though.

For large compilations like The Work or Work It, I just leave them as-is.

I do notice a LOT of repeated stuff on the concert boots though, but again I think it's just easier to leave them as-is. I'm not worried about storage space.

On my tour of Studio B in Paisley Park last year, they played all different stages of Rock N Roll Love Affair to show how the song evolved.

The first draft was already very good, then added horns and other stuff to it until it's the version we all know now. It's nice to have the different versions.
