this one was underwhelming to me initially...wasn't sure why they'd pick this when I know there was much better stuff on the set...(All My Dreams, Large Room etc) but, after 2 or 3 listens, it has grown on me...so good to hear him churn out great song after great song. It just speaks to his depth. I am still just now diving into some of the 1999 set..songs I'd sort of not paid attention to initially I am not discovering ....Yah You Know, You're All I Want...

The 1999 set was fantastic...the SOTT set is going to actually blow that one away. What a time...

Makes me thing it'd be funny if the estate manages to talk some artists into covering (or singing for the first time) songs P offered them but they declined to use. Some are dead unfortunately, but it'd be cool to hear Martika's rendition of Open Book, Violent Femme's rendition of Wonderful Ass, Joni's rendition of Emotional Pump, etc. We should actually make a list of songs artists declined to use (outside of songs considered for side projects, maybe, because the list then becomes endless, besides P often decided himself against using such or such song), it'd be interesting.

.

Out of memory:

.

DEAD:

Joe Cocker: Old Friends 4 Sale

James Brown: Chocolate (not sure if this one's confirmed but it was reported in the 90's, a 1986 submission IIRC)

Michael Jackson: Wouldn't You love To Love Me

Miles Davis: Penetration, Jailbait and A Girl And Her Puppy

Robert Palmer: Lust U Always

.

ALIVE:

Madonna: By Alien Means

Joni Mitchel: Emotional Pump

Bonnie Raitt: I Need A Man, Jealous Girl, Promise 2 Be True and There’s Something I Like About Being Your Fool

George Clinton: My Pony

Tevin Campbell: Down and The P

Violent Femmes: Wonderful Ass

Martika: Open Book

Candy Dulfer: several unknwon tracks for her 2nd album

Dale: The Latest Fashion and 2nd Thoughts

Mazarati: Jerk Out

The Three O'Clock: Girl O’ My Dreams, We Can Funk, Teacher, Teacher and Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got

Taja Sevelle: I think she mentioned a song but she couldn't remember the title

.

What did I forget?

[Edited 9/17/20 17:16pm]

If my memory serves me right, Prince also wrote 2 songs for Kylie Minogue. "Cruel Lover" and "Sex on Legs" come to mind. I think this was before her Michael Hutchence romance, so not sure her image was ready for those song titles just yet 😆

Good catch!! I'd completely forgotten those. Kylie, you know what to do!!

There was also a French version of TMBGITW for Ophélie Winter but IDK if that counts lol

They were recorded in a studio in Germany in 1991 (but never released, obviously): "Around 60 minutes of music was recorded – three takes of “Penetration”, (Garrett on alto sax), five takes of “Jailbait” (with Garrett on baritone sax) and two takes of “A Girl And Her Puppy,” (Garrett played soprano sax)."

.

Oh wow cool. I wonder what WB is waiting for. Surely the Estate would give them the right of first release!!

U're right, I just checked on Pvault and the other 2 don't seem to exist? IIRC these titled appeared in Uptown Mag at the time (?) but they appear to be fake.

My understanding (from other articles/interviews) is that what Miles played during that session wasn't that good (the plan was to re-record everything later, after all). "Jailbait" was remixed and prepared for release when WB was working on the 6-CD version of "The Last Word" (which included "Can I Play With U?") in 2001. That version of the box set never saw the light of day. If those studio recordings are ever released, I don't expect to be impressed... confused

True story - bought three songs today -

Flava In Ya Ear by Mike Phillips

Flava In Ya Ear (Remix)

Both feature Stevie Wonder, one on harmonica, the second on vocals.

The third was "I Need A Man". I let the first two play and forgot I had purchased the third - it fit right in with the other two.

Useless story, but pretty cool to my ears. cool

Nice! But isn't a track like this a little out of place on a set like this? I don't know if it was intended for a female singer, but maybe it would have fitted better on an Originals X set.

Wouldn't make sense because I Need A Man was never released. Orginals are for demo versions of released songs only.

Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Romeoblu

This is a real grower for me.

I love the horns. I would like to groove on for another minute or so

Initially when I heard the Bonnie Rait version and the leaked instrumental, I was non-plussed, but it's definitely a grower! Great to finally hear the Prince vocal version. Noticed on the Instrumental it goes on for a second more with the guitar being put down/turned off.

Perfect description. I have had the Bonnie Raitt version for awhile and due to the lyrics understood why she passed on it. But that groove is infectious. Hearing this srystal clear version, makes me appreciate it much more...I can't stop playing it!

At first I wondered why they released this as a single - I was underwhelmed on first listen. Yet the more I hear this song the more I like it - not an amazing hook but strong enough but it's the performance and playing that is great! Prince's production and the horns are so good in this period - I love this song now and one of my favourites from this SOTTSD set.
