Honestly - the insular, elitist nature of much of the Prince fan community has never failed to amaze me since becoming a fan in the 80s. Imagine any other musical artist community where fans take a perverse pride in secrecy. Bruce/NIN/Beatles - all make Prince fans look like Gollum with their precious. Prince cultivated this attitude, of course, but he’s dead - and I doubt he’d care about preserving the Estate’s future cash cows for the sake of 5000 or so hardcore fans that are left wanting to hear a concert recording. Which they will buy anyway when officially released. Saying ‘these recording are easily available’ but ‘don’t ask me where’ (and I guess that also means by org note as that’s been ignored) is absurd cloak and dagger clandestine behaviour. I get you can’t say where in public on the org, but a private communication? Prince ain’t monitoring this anymore and the chance that I’m a Web Sheriff hired by the Estate is nonexistent. I guess the buzz now, in lieu of ‘new’ releases, is not from listening to the music, but from the possession. He’s gone. It should all be shared amongst the tiny few who appreciate it. If I ever got a hold of the harddrive at Iron Mountain, you’d all be listening to Neurotic Lover’s Baby’s Bedroom within minutes. The Estate deserves none of the financial rewards of Prince’s endeavour. He deliberately didn’t make a Will. He likely wanted fate to decide what happened to it all. I personally think he should have had a legal agreement drawn up to release everything in the Vault online upon his death so no-one profited from his work.

Yeah, I get that, and completely understand the rules on the org. But remaining silent, cryptic and clandestine on private communications says more about The person trying to emulate Prince-era hype and mystery rather than preserving his legacy. I leaked Planet Earth on here years ago - had it early for various reasons - and now regret it. Not in terms of reciprocation - no-one bloody remembers me anyway - but that Prince was still alive and wanting to market it. He realised that the wait, the anticipation, was part of the experience and the pleasure. But now? He’s gone. No-one deserves to profit from the work except for Prince. It should all be realised - not marketed, not infinitely repackaged and repurposed for reassessment. There’s not many of us left. There’s no need for elitism and secret clubs anymore. And I’ve been part of them.

Videographers did not record in stereo at that time.

I believe the previous recordings are off the video (probably a mixed feed from the soundboard) and in mono.

Stereo cameras existed but you're still only getting stereo on to the medium you record to after it passes through the part of the camera they still cut corners in today, even though it's a $3 part. It was only marginally better than recording stereo to a cassette. It also depends on the microphone used. Normally you would still sync to a soundboard for a pro shoot.

Not even Neversin or T have that track, I can guarantee it. Owen Husney night sell it one day, perhaps, before the inevitable For You deluxe. I’ve always been curious about it because it was the first time he used a drum machine - not the LINN however.

But haven't this audio already been leaked? I mean, what am I about to expect that I haven't already heard? Isn't that Electric Intercourse performance practically the same that we saw on YT or Dailymotion eons ago?

Your question was "So what's the big deal with this concert??" I answered that part.

Yes, the video and audio are leaked. But the video has a few VHS warbles in it. IF it's a soundboard, those issues shouldn't be there. The VHS seems to just be the sound from the club itself, opposed to a direct feed to the soundboard. Not hard to grasp. Audience vs. soundboard recording. It's a prize if it is soundboard. One would hope it wouldn't be mono either.

Husney bought him it and that was the first tune he wrote with it, according to the jingle ninja co-lyricist to Soft n Wet himself.

.

This was recorded with late 1970s/early 1980s industrial/journalist-grade equipment. The cameras they used (shot from more than one angle, and edited later or perhaps even live) would likely not have had mics; the sound element is a separate entity.

.

The audio feed may be a dry stereo mixdown from the soundboard, or they had their own mic setup in the club near the stage, in either case recorded on separate equipment. There would be plenty of crowd noise even on the multitrack, so that doesn't help discern the source.

.

The leaked version we've had for decades is in mono due to its being assembled and converted to VHS, or perhaps Betamax, for playback on consumer-grade equipment of the era (i.e., top-loader devices), or being copied by bootleggers through such devices.

.

Someone has rediscovered, or finally widely leaked, this original sound element (or a low-generation Hi-Fi BetaMax or VHS of the finished product), which comes from the videographers even if they tapped into the SB. It sounds magnetically deteriorated from the toll of decades.

.

It wouldn't be late 70's gear, that has a very distinct look. I don't know what they used but there were early camcorders by 1983 and it was a watershed period for equipment. I have to think the show was shot a part of the PR productio to help the production conceptualize and plan. They even reproduced a couple moments.

Can't agree with you more about the ridiculous elitism and secret clubs.

That said, even if Prince isn't with us and he didn't leave instructions to his Estate, what they earn is still in his name. Maybe that's what you meant, but the marketing and repackaging could theoretically go towards continue his missions. Yeah a lot of vampires around but he dealt with that in life too.

What is a watered down soundboard?

It def is a soundboard. You can still hear the audience, but a lot of the VHS buzzing, and all that just isn't there because it's a direct feed. Not as clean as other soundboards from the same period but it's clearly not the video audience source. But is very raw, unfiltered, and unmixed. It's a step above the VHS, but it's not two steps.

It's sooo awesome...I can't stop listening 2 Purple Rain...in it's entirely version.

This is the definetly concert...and ...it should be released...I wouldn't b bothered if it isn't in high definition ...because of 1983....backdrafting in the ol'e days....of VHS or Beta...

I compared it woith the radio special from 2016 where a First Avenue employee shared his copy of only Purple Rain of the show and was broadcast in it's entirety and that one sounds even better than this one.

Yeah, and unless his estate has a much better copy (they have to), we'll always be getting something that isn't the best. It's almost certain the estate has this concert audio somewhere, since we have it on PR. They sorta missed the mark with the PR extended by not including this DVD instead of the Syracuse concert, or even on the 1999 expanded. Maybe it'll see its own release someday soon. They have to know the demand for it.

Still a fun show, though.
