I'd argue that there isn't a single unreleased track that'll convince anyone who isn't buying this already to change their minds.

it's a promotional 'single' because they know that WE haven't heard this song yet
and that it's something of a holy grail for many fans. it's something to get people
excited. the people who will actually buy the set.

Exactly. This project is not for the masses. We’re the only ones who really care. There’s not really a song on here that’s a strong single, in the traditional sense, because nobody but us is checking for the 30+ year old Prince single. I’m just happy to be getting some teasers to tide me over. Cool of them to pick a song they know many of us were anxious to hear.

Hot Damn.

That Bridge! Now that's what I call a Grand Progression.
Can't think of a better morning alarm clock,
especially during these troubled times.

What an amazing piece of fizz bubble-gum pop.
If this doesn't magically transform you into
a fifteen years old version of yourself, nothing will
(I feel sorry for the naysayers. Where has thou adolescent spirit gone?).
That solo is tearing rainbow colored skies wide open.

This may be the closer he ever got to LSD.
Makes me really wonder if Prince ever clocked 4:20.
Had the Camille album been released, it would have been
a perfect B-side to "Good Love".

Cherry pie, apple kisses, blue and whipped cream,
straight from Stoned Swinging Sixties London. Walruses, Mermen...
The same unabashed search for innocence under the influence.
"Interlude"! I mean, come on.

Princevault mentions the Clare Fischer overdubs being recorded
at "Mad Hatter Studios". Can't get more psychedelically appropriate than that.
Either that version got lost, or the Estate is keeping it up their sleeve.

The handwritten lyrics make me smile thinking about a heated discussion
I had with some guy one non-cosmic day: he was arguing that Prince
was a musician going by ear only, and that he had only
very basic knowledge of music theory.

I think I ended up telling him he was deranged.

i know, it's one of my all times favorite prince tunes. but it won't set this board alight,
now will it?

the only thing that will happen if they release "rebirth" or "pump" as singles is that the
usual suspects will come out of the woods and start to nitpick about the soundquality
for about 200 posts and throw mud at each other etc etc.

at least with a 'new' song that none of us have heard, they create some movement all
across the board.

as for the ever illusive 'general public', they won't care. as sad as that is for us, who
know just how amazing some of these tracks are and how much universal praise they
deserve, the average music listener simply won't care beyond 'oh that's pretty cool' or
'ow i don't like it, it's nothing like "when doves cry"'.

heck, there's already enough people in this thread shitting on this song (although from
experience we know that a lot of prince fans change their minds after a while and start
to praise the songs they claimed to absolutely loathe a year before) because it's not the
song of all songs that will make the whole Purple Rain album redundant in one sweep lol

what part of the average joes and janes listening to FM on their morning commute have
a musical palette that will appreciate "Rebirth of The Flesh" on the first listen? it's such
a great song, it would deserve to go to #1 any day of any decade, but like so much good
and great music, the charts don't wanna know.

I passed on "Rebirth Of The Flesh" it for years,
thinking it was over the top in a bad way.
It took the perfect quality version to floor me.
It is a masterpiece.

But so is "Cosmic Day" in its own way, except it didn't get the chance
to be more than a rough mix (which it clearly is), or to have the few more overdubs
that would give it the polished DIY lo-fi SOTT has.
Maybe Susan Rogers was up since two days straight.

This must be a great example of Prince getting absorbed in the song,
and then coming back the next day and shelve it.
Like when you record something high, thinking it's a friggin' masterpiece,
and then you come back the next day, put the tape on,
and you go: "what is THAT?". Pity, though.
It deserved the "All My Dreams" treatment: 48 tracks full of crazy shit.
Maybe this is why it disappoints some of the fans.
It doesn't get Cosmic Crazy enough.
But the vocal and guitar deliveries seal it for me.
I always loved demos, they really feel like notebook pages
and have sometimes more charm than the released versions.

If they happen to have the multi-tracks at hand,
I'm all for a remix with less reverb.
Maybe the Clare Fischer version sounds very different.

This was one of the boots i never paid much attention to. But wow this is awesome. I’m kinda glad i never paid too much attention to it, because i would have played it a hundred thousand times. Its nice to hear it fresh.

It might be just the production, but the sound quality is good-to-pretty good. I haven’t compared it to the leak/bootleg yet. But its alright. During the breakdown when he’s whispering, he sounds crystal clear.

why do certain peopple always cry "troll" or "negative", or other juvenile complaints just because someone doesnt like what they like?... then when someone responds to those type of silly replies, they get banned or threatened for "derailing" threads... thats so childish to not realize that different people from different cultures, like and dislike different things...grow up

There's the classic anticipation/expectation problem.
"Hear this one, you're going to crack up",
and the joke is already less funny.

I never quite understood the "Holy Grail" halo this one and "Wally" got.
Even if "Wally" was presented in the original version that was deleted,
it's only Susan's opinion, and it's probable some of us would be greatly disappointed,
primarily because we waited decades for it.

And then you can love 99% percent of Prince's catalog,
yet if you loathe the "Grand Progression",
rest assured some will burn you at the stake.

From a musical standpoint, I do love the portion of the song from the bootlegs. The main guitar part and the chorus hook are both killer. I'm not quite sold on the second half though, there's not much of a satisfying payoff after all the twists and turns. I wish he would have either used his natural voice to complement the raw mix of the song, or recorded a version with better production and fuller instrumentation.

Hopefully someday we can hear the version with Clare's contributions.

Another thing. I don't usually criticize people for their opinions about music, because it's all subjective and as such subject to ones own interpretaton. But this right here...stop! If you aren't feeling it, there's something wrong with you. This would be like getting teased by a young Dolly Parton...thinking to yourself how glorious those things would be if we ever got to see them. Then, years later, she says "Fuck It", and let's those bad boys free. HOLY SHIT!!! If they aren't everything we thought they'd be...and MORE!! Yes, I'm saying it...finally hearing "Cosmic Day" is like finally seeing Dolly Parton's...umm...you get the point.
