Other than 10 additional seconds, is there any other indication that Wally 2020 Remaster is the same as the leaked version? Color me skeptical but I sincerely doubt that the 'Remaster' will have the same intro that fades out as indicated in the leak.

I don't see how it can't be the same version. If there was a different version, we'd have two version of Wally on the set, like Big Tall Wall, and Witness.

Can’t wait to get the CD set... incredible release for hardcore fans... but... . I feel it would have been good for the less hardcore if Crystal Ball, Dream Factory, etc were on this set (The Crystal Ball set they’re on is quite an obscure release for many fans). And we could have lost a few 7” edits to make this work.

It doesn't seem to me like the b-sides/mixes CD really compete with the outtakes. As long as there's enough of them to fill a whole CD, they'll keep these separate and while they're willing to give up on a few mixes to make sure it's not more than 1 CD, they won't put outtakes on it at this stage.

This might change with the early albums, since there was much less non-album material, because obviously they're not gonna make a CD with only the disco mixes of Soft And Wet and Just As Long, but clearly now it's out of the question and there are also those who think it's already very disappointing that they wouldn't expand these to TWO CD's per set so that they could include everything instead of sacrificing some like they did so far.

.

So what was left was discard some other outtakes to make room for these. There was of course no way they'd include the versions that are on CB (these now belong there) but if you mean alternate cuts, that's what they they did with Crucial why not, and an alternate mix of Crystal Ball is included (admitedly not the longest one most of us would have picked, but still, it's there).

Now there are (slightly) alternate mixes of at least Dream Factory, Movie Star and Last Heart they could have used, and why not indeed? But I guess they assumed fans demanded more new material and these were better off saved for potential special RSD style editions of DF or CB86 (remarkably, such releases would not contain Crucial or the CB edit)? Thing is, the core audience for this project has already heard MOST of the outtakes in bootleg format. How many songs are there that we've never heard at all in any form whatsoever? 5 maybe? Not to mention the fact that some outtakes already appear in multiple versions on the set, so IDK. Choices had to be made...

.

Besides, I don't think CB98 is "obscure" anymore. Not in 2020 when it can be found on each and every streaming platform, and with Sony Legacy on its way to rerelease it on CD and LP in one or 2 years, and then it's in every record store as well.

When "obscure" used to mean "hard to find CD", OK. But today there's nothing obcure about a record that your 8 year old kid can find on YouTube in 20 seconds.

Can we talk about the Blue version of the cover?

Looks like they just changed changed the color on his clothes, and the drums/scarves.

What's that about I wonder? Maybe the blue was original? Sorta interesting he didn't go with peach instead of the yellow.

Still not quite sure what to believe about packaging size for SDE on CD.

Folks are saying it is definitely 12 x 12 box for CDs but official site shows packaging as CD sized (compared to LP size which shows DVD in frame.

https://store.prince.com/...vd?cp=null

Hoping it's the later. Seems silly not to make it compatible to 1999 size/packaging since 75% or more of the folks shelling out the bucks for this release are the same that payed through the nose for that one. Why not keep the packaging consistent? Some of us are a wee bit crazy that way.

And we could have lost a few 7” edits to make this work. It would also have made the 4 disk deluxe better value for the less hardcore fans. . And the 7” set is cute for The Beatles or Elvis, but this was the age of extended 12” mixes... Nice looking, but feels pointless and just wrong to me!

I keep seeing this idea that the track released on CB 98 are somehow, not actually released. I think its clear to see, that the Estate is treating that album, as a legit part of Prince's discography, and so, it's probably ALWAYS going to be around. It's not obscured anymore, especially once Sony re-releases it. Those tracks on it were their official release. Crystal Ball, Dream Factory, Sexual Suicide, Last Heart, Movie Star, Make Your Mama Happy are NOT vault tracks, and the version they could have released, are not diffrent enough, I beleive. Much like the alt version of D.M.S.R. wasn't released on 1999 SDE. That said, Crucial is like the full version of Delrious, or Something In The Water.

I'm honestly stunned how on the mark this is.

Ha you beat me to it!

Yeah, clearly there seems to be a kind of cognitive dissonance for many fans between the reality of Crystal Ball 1998 as being a proper album that's part of the canon (which is indeed how the estate sees it, but also how Prince saw it), and how it's perceived by fans as some sort of vague compilation that doesn't really exist. Funny stuff.

My guess is a longer version of the alternate "sitar" version. Both because it's the first disc (so earlier in the chronology) but also, if it was the album version without the fade, the Shep Pettibone remix seems like it'd be redudant.

Well shit...

As well as the two big boxes, 3CD and 4LP packages offer remastered album alongside the single mixes, edits and B-sides while the album-only editions come on limited 2LP peach-coloured vinyl and 2CD. All formats except 2CD and 2LP are ONE TIME ONLY pressings. Once the initial run sells out that’s it! Once the 2LP peach vinyl is gone, it will be replaced with a black vinyl version. Fans will be well aware that the 1999 super deluxe editions are now out of print less than a year after release. The vinyl sets will come with a download code!

My guess is that it's the "Wally" version we already know.
But the circulating version is probably too fast.
Maybe that's why the Deluxe version is 10 seconds longer.

Well that is how the vault defines it. They list a Crystal Ball as an unreleased set, and the Crystal Ball that was released as a vault collection of outtakes generally from two time periods. There are other details in their descriptions that help the perception too. Plus being a non-big label release some people regarded online in the same class as the NPG music club stuff, or even the Versace collections. I don't remember it being promoted as a collection instead of a new record though, maybe the press did it too, but it opens with Dream Factory, and it's not the Dream Factory record so...

I pre-ordered it too when they mistakenly put it up. Still showing in orders, link still not working. Give a day or so. It should be relisted. I've found in the past that UK pre-order listings get put up more consistently than the American store, and not just with Prince releases.

It opens with Crystal Ball. It doesn't matter how it was promoted way back then, what matters is the estate views it as canon, and not some bastard outtake collection like so many of us have viewed it since it was released.
