That SNL peformance of Electric Chair was off the god damned chain and I remember being happy, stunned and mesmerized the way he mixed that hard funk with all that firey guitar work so people could see what he could do. To this day, people say "I didn't know Prince could guitar like that" so I enjoyed seeing him put that out front.

I didn't care much for the album overall, nor the rather blatant cash grab with all the Batman shit. I didn;t think his music FIT the movie but my man had to earn so it was hard to hate on it and nice to see him back in the spotlight. It brought in some new fans just from it's popularity. There are some STELLAR tracks on this album (The Future, Electric Chair, Vicki Waiting) and that SNL appearance blew me away. I didn't even know it was sort of a temporary band that didn't last long.

Funny related story from that SNL appearance.

I used to keep a blank VHS tape that I would use to record Prince videos and live appearances back when you had to do that and when I still lived with my parents. I went off to college in 1986, had left the tape at home, and returned to find it had been recored over with Murder She Wrote episodes.

I was pissed.

Certain arts were birthed by the times they came of age in. I think Prince would have 'slayed' as a 60s artist and 70s' artists. Because his essence flowed easily during those cultural times. We saw it in him and his art through out his career. He was a bit of a conservative bohemian hippie I don't know if Prince started in the 90s if he would have made a mark or been able to holistically be who he was in the time period that became less fluid.

Bliss is the seventh track on Kahoru Kohiruimaki's sixth album Time The Motion (the second of two Prince-related tracks). The track was written and produced by Prince and Levi Seacer, Jr.
While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking took place in Summer 1989, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (during the same set of sessions as Mind Bells, Shall We Dance, Sex, Heaven Must Be Near and Seven Corners). Kahoru Kohiruimaki's manager, Seijiro Udo, had promoted Prince's Japanese concerts on the Lovesexy Tour, and Udo asked Prince to provide some tracks for Kohiruimaki, leading to the recording of Mind Bellsand Bliss. Kahoru Kohiruimaki recorded her own vocals over the basic tracks in Autumn 1989 (studio information is needed for her recording).

The sky looks like it's turnin'
Turnin' from blue 2 black
Still I feel the sun is burnin'
Hot monkey on my back
Am I in a speeding car?
Am I lying in your bed?
One kiss from U is all that I do
And I'm outta my head (My head, my head)

Bliss
This is heaven, I swear 2 God
Wish that I could spend everynight with this feeling some more
Bliss

Just as sure as this lighted candle
I can handle anything
Don't hold nothin' back
2night baby, U're the king
Birds are singin', mindbells are ringin'
I can see everything

We should take a moment
2 praise the heavens above
Every man should be so lucky (So lucky)
So lucky 2 be in love

Bliss
The sky is turnin'
Turnin' from blue 2 black (Black)
Bliss
Can't U feel the sun burnin'?
Hot monkey on my back (Back)
Get off!

Am I in a speeding car?
Am I lying in your bed?
One kiss from U is all that I do
And I'm outta my head (I'm outta my head)

Oh bliss
This is heaven, I swear 2 God
Wish that I could spend everynight with this feeling some more

Oh bliss
This is heaven, I swear 2 God
I wish that I could spend... this feeling, this feeling

Oh bliss
This is heaven, I swear 2 God {fade out}
Wish I could spend everynight, all night with this ...

Pink Cashmere is a song by Prince, written for his then-girlfriend, Anna Fantastic (Anna Garcia), for her 18th birthday. The song references the actual gift he presented to her, a coat made of pink cashmere with a black mink collar and cuff, the name Anna Fantastic embroidered on the sleeve, and "89" on the back. The coat was valued at $15,000, being custom made by his personal staff designer.

Pink Cashmere

Ooh, here I go again fallin' in love all over
Ooh, the cycle never ends, U just pray U don't get burned
Ooh, this fire inside of me, don't nobody realize
(Ooh) Ow, what U are 2 me, but baby U got 2 learn

CHORUS:
I'm makin' U a coat of pink cashmere
U got 2 know how I feel about ya, how I always want U near
I'm makin' U a coat of pink cashmere
I'm countin' every minute of every hour til U are here

Girl, can U understand I never used 2 go dancin'?
I... I was the kind of man who'd rather stay at home
Now when I think about how.. how much I miss U
I wanna jump 4 joy and thank Him I'm not alone (I am not alone)

Ooh, I'm makin' U a coat of pink cashmere
U got 2 know how I feel about U baby, how I always want U near
I'm makin' U a coat of pink cashmere (Pink cashmere)
I'm gonna count every minute of every hour until U are here
(Till U are here)

Here I go again fallin' in love all over
Oh, the cycle never ends (Cycle never endin')
U pray U don't get burned

(I'm makin' U a coat of pink cashmere)
I'm makin' U a coat.. cashmere, baby, cashmere
(U got 2 know how I feel about ya, how I always want U near)
U got 2 know, yeah baby, baby, baby, baby
(I'm makin' U a coat of pink cashmere)
How I feel about U, how I feel about U, oh
(I'm countin' every minute of every hour til U are here)

When I get my arms around U baby (Yeah) (CHORUS)
There's so many things I'm gonna do
I'm gonna hug U, I'm gonna kiss U
Like your, like your own guru
I'm gonna tell U a bedtime story baby
One U never heard before (Every minute, every hour)
I said one U never heard before (How I feel about U)
About a girl, about a boy (I'm makin' U a coat of pink cashmere)
And all their joy
All the things they show each other (Coat of pink cashmere {x3})
How 2 stay in love, how 2 stay so happy
Baby girl, so many things, so many things I'm gonna do
Can U come 2 that, can U get 2 that?
I'm gonna make... gonna... I'm gonna, gonna, gonna...
Gonna make a little pretty pink coat of cashmere

Cuz U got 2 know how I feel about U baby
How I feel about U baby
I'm gonna make a little pretty coat
I'm gonna count every second, every minute
Each and every hour of every day til U come on back
Come on back 2 your little man

I'm gonna make U a coat of cashmere baby

True.

Prince would had been relevant no matter when he happened to be born. His game and his talent are real hard to ignore or deny. Even people I meet who don't care for his stuff recognize his skill and acknowledge his brilliance, even if he's not thier cup of tea.

Very few people I run into will argue that he sucked. His detractors will say he was weird or whatever but I've never one I can't blow away (or at least impress) with the right track just by asking what THEY like and generally listen to. Metal heads, hip hop lovers, technos, punk, jazz afficianodos...I can always find a track to put on that will turn their head and ask me who that is.

Usually they're surprised to learn it's Prince.

...

I remember some young 22 year old know it all overhear me playing the back end of "Last December" once who stubbornly refused to believe it was actually Prince. Won over a couple of DJ's and blues listeners in my day too. The trick is not to be pushy. Just put it on and, believe me, they'll inevitably ask "who's that?", especially if there are no vocals.

Prince had plans for Cat to do a solo album.Throughout 1988,he recorded songs like "Cat And Mouse","A Man Called Jesus",Nine Lives",etc, for the album.

"Catwoman" is from her I Am Energy album, which was never released. The album was produced by Tim Simenon, who was Nenah Cherry's producer at the time.

I left Prince's band in 1989 and it was my choice to leave. He did not fire me. I chose to leave, because, I'm mother's child-- I have morals, values and I could make my own decisions.
I was asked to do something I didn't agree with. So, I chose to leave. That was my decision, not Prince's decision. I wasn't offered (an opportunity for) a solo career before I left Prince. I was actually on a retainer while Prince was doing the "Batman" movie. He fired someone—but, he actually wanted me to fire that person-- and that's why I left.

Cat Glover on her unreleased solo album I Am Energy: When I moved to London, they wanted me to sign with Warner Bros., or WEA International (now Warner Music International), with Fargnoli. He had started his own (record) label called Red Dot Music. The album's title, I Am Energy, was, because, everyone said when they saw me on stage I had so much energy. Prince called me his endorphin. Most of my clothes (on the Lovesexy Tour) said "Endorphin."
Basically, everyone said "Cat, when you're around me, you give me so much energy." So, I called the album I Am Energy.
However, it was never released, because, of a conflict of interest. Fargnoli was my manager, but, he also owned the label. So, it was not working out. I asked to be released from my contract and (the album) never came out. There were no more releases after (the single) "Catwoman."
"Now it Rains" was on the b-side. They asked me out of all the songs, what would I like on the b-side, and that song was something different. I wrote that about Prince. "Now It Rains" is still my favorite song.
The album was completed. However, Simenon, my producer, actually owns the masters; Warner Bros. never paid him. He has all my masters. He produced everybody: Neneh Cherry, Seal and he did a lot of remixes for Prince. He's a really good friend of mine.

Ah, that is Steve Parkes sketch for the Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic aborted album

I included it with the Rave information in post #25

"So once upon a time there was going to be an album called Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic in 1989 and this was an approved concept for the gatefold vinyl.
I'd have painted it.
Then Batman happened."

This would have been a good inclusion for the Rave album Yo Mister is the fourth track on Patti LaBelle's second MCA Records album Be Yourself. Later in 1989, Yo Mister was released as the album's second single, containing various remixes of the track. Basic tracks were recorded on 11 November 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (six days after the Camille album was completed). Patti LaBelle's lead vocal overdubs were recorded on 21 May 1988 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (on the same day as lead vocal overdubs onto Love 89).

Oh, mister how's your daughter?
You really ought to know
For every thing you taught her
Don't matter when she's all alone

My crazy friend named Cara
After all of us told her, ?No?
S-s-she'd get another spoon ball
Now, she's going no where slow

Her papa caught her for the first time
And put her out on the street
Cara told me to remind him
That she was only seventeen

Yo, mister how's your daughter? how's your girl?
You really ought to know
Every thing you taught her
It don't matter when she's all alone

Cara got hooked up with the wrong kids
Then s-s-she started skipping school
Then Cara got high to make disappear
A world full of fools

In her eyes her father was the biggest fool of them all
And she was speeding, that's what she?d say
Maybe, maybe, maybe she...

In her eyes her father was the biggest fool of them all
And she was speeding, that's what she?d say
Maybe, maybe, maybe she wouldn't talk so stupid
If she knew how much she needed this fool today

Yo, mister how's your daughter?
You really ought to know
For every thing you taught her
Don't matter when she's all alone

She needs you right now mister
?Cause she ain't got long to live
It?s so easy to say, ?I love you?
But it?s harder to forgive

Her father cried when I told him that Cara twice got knocked up
He said, ?Just like her mama, aha, she shows her body
When she wants to show love, she tried that stuff with me
And I beat her down, there's no way I could let her stay
Couldn't let her stick around ?

?Cause I tried so hard to raise her right
He said, ?What made her turn out this way?, I don't know
What made her turn out this way, I don't know, I don't know
And I said and I said and I said

Yo, mister how's your daughter?
You really ought to know, every thing
Every thing you taught her
Don't matter when she's all alone

But she needs you right now mister
She ain't got long to live
It?s easy to say, ?I love you?
But it?s harder to forgive
(How?s your daughter tonight?)

Yo, mister how's your daughter?
(How?s your daughter tonight?)
Yo, mister how's your daughter?
(How?s your daughter tonight?)

Yo, mister how's your daughter?
(How?s your daughter tonight?)
Yo, mister how's your daughter?

Personally my favourites from this era are the songs he gave to other artists Love 89, Yo Mister, 101, Sticky Wicked, Eternity. And the demos of Love 89 and YM are spectacular.

THE SEX OF IT

The album was completed and scheduled for release when Prince submitted the song in late 1989 (which he had promised when meeting Darnell in Europe during the Lovesexy Tour), and the record company delayed the release to include the song.

A handwritten tracklist for The Time’s Corporate World on which Prince and Morris Day worked on in Summer 1989 shows that The Sex Of It was, at one point, also considered for that album.
But it is not known if an actual recording with Morris Day’s vocals took place.

Summer 1989 Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA Possible recording or vocal overbubs with Morris Day (tentative) Late 1989 - early 1990 Studio information needed August Darnell vocal overdubs (no Prince input)

(51) Cat - Catwoman - YouTube

Out of all of the protogee artists, I really wanted a Cat Glover album. I don't know why, but I always dug her style and would have loved to see a full-length from her.

agree. what's the story of the tree portrait?

Ah, that is Steve Parkes sketch for the Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic aborted album

I included it with the Rave information in post #25

"So once upon a time there was going to be an album called Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic in 1989 and this was an approved concept for the gatefold vinyl.
I'd have painted it.
Then Batman happened."

This article describes how Jana Anderson started working with Prince in 1989.

During her interview, Anderson recounts running into Prince years later, around 2008:

Anderson went on to work with Fleetwood Mac, Don Henley and Sheena Easton. Around 2008, she spotted Prince on a flight to Minneapolis, and they spent time catching up. He surprised her by suggesting she record a country album, which she was in the middle of doing at the time.

"He just knew stuff," she said. "It was like he was clairvoyant."

She said Prince also offered an apology.

"He said, 'I'm really sorry about what happened when we were working together,'" she recalled. "'I don't know if you heard, but I was having a lot of trouble with my record company at that time.' ... Maybe he felt bad I didn't get credit for 'MPLS.' I'm not sure what [it was].
