I forgot to mention that Katie was a dimwit and worse actor than Prince. Movie would have been far better without her (astounding she had the part written for her).

cute flick...horrible cast...Jill Jones shouldve been Mary Sharon. and Steven Berkoff??...no

Idk if jill Jones could've pulled that role off.I thought the casting of Steven Berkoff was great. He was a bad guy so he was suppose to make you hate it dislike him.It worked for me

Kristin Scott Thomas was no great actress (in this movie) either, and Jill Jones was as good an actor as Jerome and Prince, and by far more beautiful than Kristin Scott Thomas...Steven Berkoff was such a cliche as the "bad guy" at that point, that his casting (and his role in the film) came off as lazy and corny. Berkoff as villain was tired after "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Rambo First Blood II"
... i watched the movie again this weekend though, and Prince's acting in this movie is underrated...that flick would have been AMAZING in color...thats what the estate needs to release...UTCM IN HD COLOR.

If a movie makes you cringe or feel embarrassed for your favorite celebrity that stars in it, then odds are that it's not "a great film"....that is exactly how Under The Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge made me feel. lol

You are right on the money with saying this, I wholeheartedly agree with you. They're both embarrassing movies with way too much 'vanity shots' of Prince prancing around. And I really really love Prince, so it's not like I want to be mean or anything, just my honest opinion.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Oh yeah, I forgot about her Golden Globe and Oscar nominations!

I really love Prince too funkaholic1972, but that doesn't mean that I have to love everything the man did, and pretend that he was perfect and everything he did was perfect. So I understand that you're not being mean or anything, just giving an honest opinion, just as myself and others that do. smile

I'm patiently waiting for the Estate to come take my money. It don't matter if I got 17 copies around here somewhere, a match set of 17 in color would balance things out, seems logical.

Here are some actually favorable reviews of the film from The Village Voice and RogerEgert.com:

That's fine, but no one is going to tell me what I should think or feel about a movie, any movie! Some think UTCM was a bad movie and some don't, I happen to be one of those that think it was bad, and that's perfectly okay too, just as it is for those who think it wasn't.

Also, to add to my "Mary played drums" no "she played a beat box" posts, I forgot to mention:

I love Prince, adore his music and think he's THE singular talent of my generation (I'm 53). I own tons of his material - a whole dedicated shelf - and just think he's the best. But I do NOT own PR, GB or this...thing.

But this movie fucking sucks out loud and reminds me that "as actors and film makers go, Prince was a hell of musician". It's god damned embarassing and I'd be ashamed to show it to anyone. I saw it theaters when it came out. Same with GB. I TRIED. Because I love Prince that much but let's not delude ourselves and pretend that those movies, or even PR, were any sort of grand artistic statement or even cult classics in the latter case(s).

For the most part, any time Prince tried to introduce narrative visual themes into his work, they fell flat (3 Chains of Gold, That Gett Off thing or even the Undertaker or that VH1 special). And usually hard.

PR got buy by being in the right place at the right time, around peak MTV, and mostly skated by due Prince's musical numbers and his natural oozing charsima, but it's no great shakes and just BARELY holds up. A LOT of bad acting and a TON of weird misogony that has aged poorly.

It's OK to like a movie and this is just my take on his stabs at cinema.

This thread topic seems to come up once or twice a year around here but the answer is always the same, IMO. The movie is god awful - just terrible - and only succeeds in being interesting because it's so bad it's funny and SOME of it is filmed in an interesting way. The only question is whether it's worse or better than GB and I waffle on that because they both suck SO hard but GB has more Music. To suggest otherwise is wearing fandom blinders or not understanding film making at all from where I stand.

But this thing has its defenders somehow. Maybe my fandom has its limits.

Having said that, before I get dog piled, again, it's OK to like a movie - and I won't fault anyone for liking what they do. People I'm friends with who know I like Prince and who ask me about it? I say "Everything that non Prince fans dislike about Prince? This movie has EVERYTHING that that people dislike about Prince" and I advise them to never watch it and point them in directions they likely never knew about.

I'm an affeciando and follower of "bad movie comedy" like MST2k and podcasts like We Hate Movies that like to poke fun at horrible shit in funny ways, so ones mileage may vary regarding my criticism, but get the fuck out of here that this some misunderstood classic that no one gets. Or that it's even funny or romantic. I don't get it AT ALL.

Prince is terrible and oddly creepy in it, his character has no redeeming qualities, the acting sucks, the scripts sucks, the shift to B&W was just done to make it seem more "artistic" and match the album graphics, and the whole thing was some weird vanity project that just does not work or resonate, much as some try to make it so.

The best Prince movie is Sign O the Times because he's doing what he does best, but even that movie hiccups with those weird Cat seques and the strange interludes he likes to think are deep or some shit.

Whoa..that was longer than I menat it to be. Apologies.

Glad u like the movie and sorry if my judgement seems harsh. Thought I'd weigh in with something beyond boom boxes and Mary playing drums and give the thread something to chew on.

Not defensive at all, what reason do I have to be defensive for? You're the one who listed two sources by movie critics stating the UTCM was not a bad movie, and that those who thought so, should "give it a chance" as if that would somehow magically change their minds and make them think that UTCM was oscar worthy! lol

Not one thing. And I don't think anyone said that.

What's wrong with letting people post why they dislike it and disagree about its merits in a thread dedictated to the film?

Or, assuming this is directed at me, is this the "POST Only if YOU LOVE UTCM" thread? If it wasn't than I apologize. Not sure where I see any hostile attitudes aimed at anyone who doesn't like it. If so, I guess quote the person.

I don't see anyone "yelling" at all. Unless long, detailed posts constitute "yelling"

There's nothing wrong with letting folks enjoy what they enjoy, just like there's nothing wrong with those stating that they didn't like the movie, it's simply just posters stating their opinions, as allowed to, whether you've heard the criticism 1000 times or not.

It wasn't directed specifically at you but you were included since you did write a long dissertation about why the movie was bad. Nothing wrong with you expressing your opinion, except I know for at least 2 decades at this very place there have been plenty of threads about all the things wrong with the movie that literally downed anyone who said they liked it. Seems bizarre for someone, anyone to get belly hurt because someone, anyone tells ya they don't care about your opinion, they found value in the movie and they want to celebrate that fact. It like being an extra big party poop.

I didn't. Just replying in the event that it was since it was right below mine. Did you miss the very polite wording of "IF IT WASN'T" part of my post that had the preemptive qualifier and apology I put in there that assumed I may be mistaken or are we just skipping enitre sentences people write and...uh...whatever this is?

The poster you cited didn't quote ANYBODY so how the fuck do I know who it's directed at? I considered rephrasing my OP but then I realized that it was already phrased perfectly fine, that is assuming somone reads the whole post.

Take it easy. It's all good. We're just discussing a movie that I'm overjoyed that you happen to like and that I don't care for.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go dig these eggshells out of my feet before I post anything else on this weird, divisive message board.

Carry on.

To be honest,I think the huge success of Purple Rain (the movie) sorta went to Prince’s head.It convinced him that he is an “actor”,not realizing that it was really the music and the musical performances that made Purple Rain such a hit.

Imo,the only two good Prince movies are Purple Rain and the Sign O’The Times concert film.

Yeah--all these "Prince" movies are what they are, vanity projects that don't contribute a whit to the cinema canon. Regardless I feel that he was a photogenic little man with a huge sense of humor for whom a bit of serious directorial guidance could have made him a decent character somewhere in film. Film wasn't really his forte, though, and we all know that he didn't much take to direction, so whatcha' gonna do? Regardless of the clumsiness one may perceive toward his efforts to create visual stories w/ narrative I can still appreciate that effort and enjoy seeing these artifacts. The people who make all of these negative posts seem to be kind of jealous that he made those 3 films--what nerve!-- or they take their creation as a kind of personal affront toward their preference for his music and wish to defend their honor toward said fandom, is the best rationale I can cobble for the vehement protestations in these-type threads centered on Prince's film/video short
appearances as a dramatic lead. I guess we all gotta' do what we must to feel whole and secure.

For what it's worth, my two cents:

Purple Rain transcends its flaws and is enjoyable for everyone. It's a masterpiece despite all sorts of dodgy acting and plot holes.

Under the Cherry Moon looks great and is fun if you're a fan but no-one else enjoys it except perhaps some of the nice cinematography. The slapstick almost all entirely falls flat, the story is baggy and all over the place and the performances are... mixed at best. I can still watch it but come on, get a grip.

Graffiti Bridge is close to unwatchable, even for big Prince fans. Yes, his hair looks nice if you're into that, and it's interesting as a fan to see where his big-ideas were going, and to see some of the time-period stuff, and there's a few fun scenes... but frankly the trailer presents a more coherent story then the film itself.
