Is "The very best of Prince" worth buying?

Saw it for sale at walmart today for $18.
I already have "Ultimate ","hits/b sides",and "4ever".
I know all of the songs that are on the very beat of are available on the Cd's I have but for those of you have it,is there any special artwork that would kinda justify getting it?
Also, was this released against Prince's blessing?

I say no. Edited versions of songs I have in full/extended/remix versions on like 4 different albums. Nope. Waste of $$.

If you've already got those other compilations then there's no point getting this. I mean, even if you didn't have those other albums I'd personally avoid this so called "Very Best of Prince". One look at that tracklist will tell you that the title of the album is bullshit. And at $18? For 17 songs, some of them shortened. It's not a good deal.

The first Prince album I ever bought so it has a special place in my heart! But if you are not a competist and have the other Warners hits collectons no need to get it I'd say.

No. It's the only album I don't have in my collection. You have all the better greatest hits sets, plus the albums. Bying this cheap cash grab doesn't make any sense.

Personally no, but that's because I already have all the songs from other albums. It would just be needlessly buying the same songs all over again, and that's just ridiculous, even if it is Prince. biggrin

It feels insignificant with the other compilations out mentioned herein. I have it, but I've never listened to it beyond when I first got it.

It was the first prince release I didn’t buy. I didn’t purposefully avoid it, I just never got around to buying it. There’s nothing on it that’s not elsewhere, but I’ll probably get it some day for completeness.

I agree.

Even though I do have those 'other compilations' I bought it anyways just to add to my collection. Played it a few times and then put it away.

Agreed.

It's a completist thing.

I mean, it is a compilation, not an album.

I kind of didn't even realize people potentially mathed it that way, I came from the opposite end of music nerdom where it was like kind of odd if you say Legend is your favorite Bob Marley album or put Eagles Greatest Hits on a Top Albums ranking.

The Hits / The B-Sides: In addition to a large collection of 7" singles, contained some fresh material and an entire disc of B-sides, many of which were not previously available on CD.

Ultimate: Contained a disc of 12” versions and extended mixes that we’re previously rare / not issued on CD.

4Ever: Contained the first official release of ‘Moonbeam Levels’

All of the above releases contain something extra that make them worth while, even for die hard fans that have all his original albums. Unfortunately that can’t be said for ‘The Very Best of’. It would be worth buying for newcomers that own very little Prince music, outside of that I’d save your money.

even though I never bought it (as there was nothing new on it) my wife did before she met me and she plays it in the car. My favourite compilation so far was Ultimate smile

I mean... can't you just put those songs in a playlist and listen to it... or burn to a CD if you're feeling romantic....

It's not like any of those tracks can't be found ANYWHERE that Prince's name is mentioned.

No I am too lazy to do that. The only thing that would make me want to buy it is for the artwork. If it is really good and maybe came with rare pics or lyrics then I would most likely buy it.

I don't mean to speak for anyone else (and yet, look at me go) but I think Luv meant that it's good to get from a collector's standpoint. Like, if Phase3 was interested in building up their Prince collection, then they should get The Very Best of Prince because it's a nice addition to the collection. But, if they're not too interested in that and was purely in it for the music alone, then there's no point if they already have other Best Of albums.

For those that own this cd,Can you tell me if it comes with a good booklet with some good pictures and lyrics?

Weak booklet, weak tracklist. It doesn't even cover all his biggest WB hits, and if they're saying "the very best of Prince" is a handful of hits that can fit on one CD, I'll go ahead and call this album mistitled. It's a WB cash-grab for those who don't want to purchase the more expensive triple disc hits/B-sides (which has stellar liner notes and photos), or who can't choose between Hits 1 and Hits 2. I'd say it's only for very determined competionists and people buying their first Prince album. I bought it when it came out because it grabbed my eye but I haven't listened to it since getting the hits/Bs. Save your money.

If you are going to buy a compilation, I'd get Ultimate Prince.

Even Prince listened to this one. After the plane incident he commented on twitter that he was listening to "Controversy" from the album Ultimate Prince.
