Go back and review page one of this thread. PennyP came in at reply #4 stating that Wendy and Lisa are lying about their story of Mountains. You came in right behind her with your BS sarcastic remarks stating they're liars as well. Funny thing is, they KNEW AND PLAYED with Prince steadily for years, and then off and on throughout his career. YOU didn't. I'd say that makes them a hell of a lot more credible than you.

lol Post #4 said, 'Sure Wendy, sure'.

No where did I mention Lisa. lol

Yes, I think Wendy is over embellishing, as do most of the associates.

lol Except that BOTH Lisa and Wendy - during their spot on Sirius XM Prince channel were telling the SAME story TOGETHER. So, nah....nice try though!!

Right. Always the doubters who were nowhere near Prince during that time, yet refuse to believe those who were. Not to mention, Mountains has been a beloved track for the whole of Prince's career, and which he continued to play through the 2000's.

Looks like it was put up for auction in 2917; I wonder who has it now... A handwritten note is such a treasurable item in this ephemeral digital era.

Again...no kidding Penny. My point is that BOTH Wendy & Lisa just re-told this exact account of Wendy’s on their recent Sirius XM spot. So, if you are calling Wendy a liar then, by default, you are including Lisa as well.

I’m sure Susannah has a copy. She had it for 30+ years. I know Questlove bought a bunch of her items, including the UTCM notebook.

So it's probably out of Susannah's book, that she auctioned? Wonder if it was jus the page or the entire book?

It was just the page. The page was already torn out of their art book.

WHO THE F CARES??? IT WAS A FAN FAVORITE, PERIOD. Clearly it meant A LOT to Prince, or he wouldn't have still been playing by the year 2011.

*

Other than Kiss, NONE of the songs on Parade made it to the top 10. What a stupid post. Most of my favorite Prince songs never made it to the top 10, becuase they're better than songs designed to be "mainstream" pop hits.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE!!!!! For all the folks who seem to thinik the account of the creation for the music of Mountains was JUST a "Wendy" fabrication.....here is the dialogue between Wendy AND Lisa during their Prince Playlist show for Sirius XM:

*

Wendy: "Let's talk about Mountains, because that song seems to be a fan favorite.

*

Lisa: "Oh, that's a great one."

*

Wendy: "Yeah, that's off the Parade record. The story behind the song was - we were recording the soundtrack to the film UTCM. Lisa and I had flown to London to work on - I beilieve we were working on - it wsa either Life Can Be So Nice or Do U Lie - we were working on one of the older tracks - not "older" tracks but the songs that had already been recorded for that record, and Mountains was one of the last songs we recorded. So, we were in London waiting for him (Prince) to arrive from the set down in the South of France, and me, Susan Rogers, and Lisa decided to put some fresh tape up - something that the young folks don't do anymore. Fresh tape!!."

*

Lisa: "That's right, we recorded on tape."

*

Wendy: "Exactly right. So we said, "let's put up some fresh tape and record something new. So me and Lisa recorded the music to Mountains, and when Prince walked in he had that funny look in his eyes that he gets when he wants to embed himself and own something, and make it his own. He had that funny look in his eyes.

*

Lisa: "Yeah."

*

Wendy: "You know, it's kind of like when a dog looks at you sideways, but doesn't quite look their pupils right at you - their just looking at the side of your head, right? He had that kind of look.

*

Lisa: "Well, he got really excited, because of two things. One thing was that the groove you had put the drum machine through a delay pedal."

*

Wendy: "Well, only a couple elements of the groove, not the whole thing. The kick didn't have it."

*

Lisa: "Yeah, so there you go. We were experimenting, and putting things through delays, and fooling around, and that was kind of a unique thing to do back then, and it was a song that I had written on the piano when I was a little kid, actually. I was like 13 or something, and I'd been playing it on the piano all my life, and he heard it a couple of times, and he'd always look at me like, "what's that?". So, Wendy and I recorded it in London with Susan Rogers and then he showed up and he heard it and he said, "We have to write this.". And I remember being on the airplane - I don't know - going back to LA or something - and he was sitting, funny enough, behind us somewhere, and he came up with his notebook, and he had written the lyrics. And it was "17 Mountains stood so high", and I was like, what is this story?? It's so odd about mountains, and when I heard how he sang it, it was just great, and we did the vocals. It's one of my favorite songs."

*

Wendy: "Yeah, same here."

*

So, clearly the story of how Mountains became a song is NOT just Wendy's story. And I actually did not realize Lisa had come up with the piano piece long before she and Wendy recorded the music in London.

Thanks for this violet, it's very nice to hear the whole process told by the people who were involved at the time, yet at the same time something really strikes me... I suppose all people have different reporting styles, but I just cannot imagine Prince saying things like 'Oh I came up with this and helped so and so create that, etc.' He always seemed to emphasize more on those who have helped him achieve something rather than putting himself forward in explaining how something was created. It's my impression anyway. I guess perhaps that's because he didn't have to prove anything because... 'he's Prince', and that in itself, was enough. Just a thought. cool

Side note: you don't have to 'prove' anything either because:

1) this song being a 'Prince and the Revolution' song, implies it's part of a collective project

2) Wendy and Lisa are officially credited as songwriters

You're welcome CherryMoon!!!

*

Hmm, I don't take it as them having to prove something. I think it's more about just sharing their experiences with Prince, and details about what and how they contributed to certain songs.

*

It's been widely known that Prince wanted full control of his music and the recording process, and before Dirty Mind he was not collaborating with anyone - with the exception of maybe Andre. He slowly began allowing that collaboration with Matt Fink on Dirty Mind, and then more with The Revolution. The fact that Prince was specifically mentioning Wendy and Lisa being in the studio with him back then, and also reporters writing about it speaks to what was happening as well.

*

At any rate, I think they just want to talk about their experiences and explain the process of how some songs that they collaborated on came to fruition. It must have been pretty cool for Lisa to have a piano piece included on the Parade album that she had created as a teen smile

It flopped because it wasn't a top 10 hit??? So, are SISIA or Anotherloverholeinyouhead flops too, because they were not top 10 hits??

*

Top 10 hits are usually more simple and catchy "pop" or love songs that mainstream America can easily groove to without much thought or complexity. Mountains is a sophisticated piece of music - both the instrumental AND the lyrics.
