Yeah, but let's not fool ourselves. Prince done stole half his show from a dozen acts before him.

And Maxwell didn't?!?! Dude is who he is because he's a solid artist. I only hate that he waits so f-ing long between releases. Even MJ didn't take this long! haha

Yes, I was just agreeing with you that Prince took many of his influences and incorporated them into his music and performing style.... smile

Maxwell's label not releasing his triology, that he KEPT promising his fans FOR YEARS, was going to come out proves it wasn't as good as he thought it was. Gone were the days that labels released multiple albums from an artist that wasn't as prolific & great as Prince(r.i.p.) each and every time.

See, I'm told the Maxwell's and D'Angelo's of the world are their "own" by their assorted stans or whatever, but to me all I hear within 10 seconds of their tracks/acts is Prince Clone #etc, etc.... I even pulled up the YouTube and these are all blatant soundalikes... they're amalgams of different Prince eras at best, the difference was Prince was an amalgamation of wholly different artists and wholly different eras of music history. They're borderline tribute artists... it's like comparing an international cookbook to the stock recipe that comes on the back of a pasta box.

Yes! Thank you!
Even when it was repeated the next day, it had that weird echo.

As for The Beautiful Ones, Wendy, Lisa and Susannah, I sussed that it went like this:

Susannah was in the studio waiting for Prince while he was recording, screaming.
Wendy and Lisa were home. Chick drove Prince to the burgalow, W&L went out to the car, and P played TBO for them. (Susannah may have been in the car.)
But it was obvious that W&L had not heard it before; they would have, if they'd been in the studio that night.

I have to say, despite loving him and his music, BLACKsummer'snight felt like a let down. It's like - where did neo-soul go? Did it leave the building? Is anyone even trying to keep it alive? Cuz "Pretty Wings" or whatever ain't it.

I don't remember anything about blackSUMMER'Snight.

I believe they get one hour increments - at least that is what Wendy and Lisa had. I guess it's possible that Sheila was on live for an hour, and then they continued to play her selections for the next four??

Yes. That was kind of weird. Like they held a cassette recorder up to a stereo in 1989. “ Yep...we got it. No DJ talking over it. We are good.”

I wish they would play Wendy and Lisa’s full curated list somewhere. At the beginning of their Purple Playlist they said they had chosen 62 songs but obviously had to break it down

The W&L one on demand also loads at 6 hours...... so not sure what that means

At first I thought it was a special 6 hour show with them, but it's just their bit and what seems like the regular playlist for the next 5 hours.

I don't remember anything about blackSUMMER'Snight.

R. Kelly(dare I say) actually saved Maxwell's career by writing his hit single "Fortunate" The song, Maxwell's biggest hit to date, besides "Pretty Wings" spent eight weeks at number one on the US R&B chart and peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 . It is his first number-one R&B hit. It's ironic that he first rejected the song from R.Kelly. Maxwell has a VERY beautiful voice but he is no comparison to Prince(r.i.p.) in being prolific.

Interesting. A few thoughts:

I don't know how much he saved it, because "Fortune" and a handful of songs from BLACK are the only big hits he's had. I mean, a #1 hit is never a bad thing, but I really never heard "Fortunate" anywhere, nor would I know it if I heard it now. At least, I can't recall anything about it.

It's odd how popular Maxwell is, yet his chart history is pretty dismal. "Ascension" was #2 on US Urban AC chart, #8 on R&B and #36 on the US chart. The only other #2 on US Urban AC was "Luxury:Cococure" from Embrya, which I think is a highly underrated album. Even on his Storytellers, he sort of half-asked the audience, "Y'all like that album? Really?" as if he were surprised that people knew it well enough to know anything from it.

And while I think NOW is slightly lesser than UHS or Embrya, it was his first #1 on US & US R&B charts. Possibly because there was a 3-year gap, where there was only 2 between the first two albums, plus an unplugged.

Working from that theory and putting it on the success of BLACKsummer'snight, it's possibly why Bsn generated more than one #1 hit. People waited eight fucking years for that record, so things like "Pretty Wings" was more "FINALLY" than "oh wow, this is a great song." Not a horrible song, but it's not "Ascension" or "Sumthin' Sumthin'" either.

It seems by the time blackSUMMER'Snight came out, people just sorta gave up on the whole trilogy thing. But it still hit #1. It didn't rate any major singles, though. "Shame" from bsN was released two years ago, and we've heard nothing. All the waiting made me just sorta give up on him. The disappointment with Bsn added to that. It didn't feel it was worth the wait. He lost his audience and any career momentum. He wait a long time. Let one music landscape in 2001, and came back to something very different in 2009.

Given his output from 2009, if his career was just the first three albums plus unplugged, I would've been happy.

I heard a good portion while making dinner last night. I said to my friend, "I hate that they never did a song together. How fucking epic would that have been?" Dare I say, it'd be more epic than him and someone like D'Angelo doing a duet. 1999 would've been a good year for Maxwell to pop out and do a duet w/ Prince on Rave or something (since he was between albums but still had some non-album tracks out like "Fortunate"). I can also see them doing something timely on Musicology, although it's not my favorite Prince album.

The Revolution purple playlist is repeating right now. Been going since 3pm ET. But at about 75 minutes in, Lisa talks about when she was writing "Song About," a song from W&L's debut record - and a song about Prince - she said she noticed later she used the same chords as "Crazy You." Of course, you can't copyright a chord progression, you just can't copy the melody.

I never noticed the similarity, but it's there.
