But did Prince stop after a final warning that it will make him handicap or he stop because pain was consuming him way too much.on HitnRun 2000 2001 tour he was still doing all his acrobatic moves but just a year latter he nevet danced again and no i don't count his booty shaking during Kiss live dancing

Yeah but, do you consider this token Prince dance move the “splits”? The conventional splits versus his one leg straight to the front, one leg back and bent might’ve been worse on the hips in all actuality. I’ve wondered that myself and looked for signs of pain or a grimace during live performances. Just curious when the pain started, and how long he continued to do them shits. The jumping, heels, and high kicks were also in the arsenal. Eh? He just seemed to flow, and not want to disappoint!

"And if you know you can't spell or use proper sentence structure.....seek help?" Come on, it's not that serious! Not being able to "spell or use proper sentence structure" is not the end of the world, and there are far more things in life that are so much more important.....lighten up! And now, in the words of Forrest Gump...."that's all I have to say about that!"...Now back to the topic at hand, and I apologize to all you guys for straying off topic.

[Edited 4/4/20 11:55am]

you must not have seen the original post, before the OP did multiple edits...it wasnt just a typo or bad grammar here or there...it was almost completely illegible...no excuses or defense for that

But who CARES? People here are from different countries and even if they aren't, who gives a shit if a word is not spelled correct, if a comma isn't placed just perfect, or if someone edited their posts 10 times? C'mon this nonsense needs to stop.

Thank you! IMO, the tone of those replies suggests some messed up priorities!

As far as the splits go, would love to hear the take of folks who’ve done some heavy duty dance or related athletic activity over many years. Any dancers reading this and up for commenting?

Agree with others that extent of any joint hypermobility, and opportunity to warm up, can have big effect on safety.

Based on the mind set of some posts in this thread- if any dancers do reply to your question they'll just be ripped to pieces because they're not Prince so how can they compare themselves and their dancing to his? wink Sometimes it's embarrasing to read some of the posts (I'm not referring to yours rednblue) on here, ya know? So much meaness when it's not even necessary. We're all in the same boat now and we're scared about what's coming down the road (if anyone admits it or not) so can't we try to be nicer to each other? We may be dead tomorrow- who wants the meaness being served up to be the last thing they do? Yeah, I know, rose colored glasses and all that but so what? Practice some restraint before lashing out at others please. Now let the bashing begin........ confused

Thanks! Much agree!

Plenty of people have issues with posting. All manner of reasons why, to include that we’re human. One of my posting issues is doing a ton of edits. In fact, I’m gonna go do one right now. No time like the present. : ) “Hyperextensibility” was in my head, but a better word would be “hypermobility.” Joint hypermobility. Have no idea if it might have applied to Prince. It’s one characteristic that can increase susceptibility to injury...one thing that can make the hazard in a given activity differ from one person to another.

In any case, those frequent splits, and some of the other moves (e.g. all those jumps in heels), sure seemed like they could take a toll.

It's not just the splits, it's the bouncing up and down splits, followed by the kicks and spins. You're going to put stress somewhere. For Prince it was his hips, for someone else, it might be their knees or lower back.

Sheila talked about him jumping off speakers, but landing in splits couldn't have helped. They performed bare foot to symblize the heels he wore, which everyone knows cause problems eventually. But hell, in the big scheme of things, it could have been the stage slides on his hip he would do or something less apparent that just cause stress. It could have been just the way he carried balance when he danced period, nothing even that involved. At some point he started grooving with his knees and shoulders a lot more.

It could have also just been long flights with a tiny ass didn't help.

Whatever the cause, either genetic or a sports injury (most likely) he kept irritating it and couldn't really avoid it, because that was his job. Millions of us have nagging mild injuries, and experience that day when you go "Oh wait, I can't get out of bed, this is serious" or "Hold up, I am a lot of pain and I just walked down the hall".

After selling shoes for roughly 20 years, my knees are my downfall. All of that bending up and down over and over really did a number on them. This was when the shoe business was full service, not like today when most places expect their customers to 'help' themselves and place their product on the shelves where it's self-service. I can't sit for more than an hour or it makes it hard for me to get up. I have a job now where I am on my feet all day and you'd think that would make things worse but it actually helps with the pain. I'm waiting for that day when my knees just say 'Enough!'.

And instead of 'toughing up" why don't you "be kinder and more considerate of others" because yes, although the WORLD is a "nasty" place, doesn't mean you have to be a nasty person in the WORLD, and treat others that way.

we dont agree here...nothing "nasty" about what happened...if youre gonna present anything in any kind of public forum, be prepared for critique...and if you know you cant spell or use proper sentence structure, seek help...and if you still get it wrong, dont be a helpless baby when someone corrects you...be accountable for your own errors, and dont play the victim role...

Really?!

the thing that has always stood out to me about P's splits is how smooth he picks himself up out of them. It requires a TON of strength to pick urself up the way he does doing a split. he seems to just glide right back up.

He stopped cussing out of the blue.

Y'all realize this man lived his life day to day, puttering around Paisley Park or wherever without anyone knowing anything about him, what he ate, what he wore, a joke he cracked, or what shampoo he decided to use, right? He listened to his body, and what he was able to do. And wasn't.

Even someone healthy like Justin Timberlake, who works out and is in really good shape, mentioned how he's in his late 30s (he's 39 this year I believe) and he's not quite able to do things he used to do. Of course, being a dancer and performer who works a lot on tour, that shit wears on your body after a while. I heard from a dancer who is only 27, was a dancer for the Backstreet Boys in Vegas, was in Sia's "Cheap Thrills" video, and a million other things. He won the Netherlands So You Think You Can Dance, I believe. He said recently on his Instagram he's not sure what he'll do after he's done with dancing. He talked about how his body hurts every single day, and dancing has already worn on his body.

So for Prince, to do the things he did for years, in such an intense setting (yearly tours, etc.) - no one had to advise him on anything. There's just a time when he couldn't do what he used to do anymore.

I would suggest stop doing the splits by the time you are 40 unless it's comfortable to do so. The successive splits he did in Rave 2000 would have been hard to pull of for anyone regardless of how fit they were.

As for posts, can people stop ending sentences with a preposition? Not nit picking or anything..... 😉

He possibly was advised to stop, but when you hear stories as far back as 1985 that he performed even when he was unwell because he hated to cancel shows and pushed through, this attitude Im afraid is when the damage when done, he paid for it later on. The 92 tour would have destoyed him physically with those dance moves night after night.
