Duane Tudahl's upcoming book "Prince and the Parade and Sign "O" the Times Era Studio Sessions: 1985 to 1986"

Previous thread: https://prince.org/msg/7/462167

.

Original message from Duane from 31 January 2020:

.

I've been working on book 2 for over 3 years and I'm almost finished! ALMOST! lol My publisher got a little OVER excited and accidentally posted my book going on sale early but since the cat is out o' the bag, here is the scoop straight from my keyboard to you! Book 2 will be out in March 2021 and I'm very excited about getting this finished and on the market.

.

Book 2 (1985-86) covers: Parade, SOTT, Crystal Ball, Dream Factory, Madhouse 8, The Family, The Flesh, Jill Jones album, parts of The Black Album, Camille, Sheila's 2nd and 3rd album, the last part of the Purple Rain tour, the Parade tour, UTCM movie, as well as the break-up of The Revolution and The Family and more! There is so much incredible music in this one. HE DID ALL OF THIS IN TWO YEARS!

.

I've been incredibly lucky to have interviewed so many fantastic people about their time in the studio, and I will admit that I may like this book even more than book 1! I promise to keep working on this to get it out there as quickly as possible. Thank you Rev for the incredible cover! You've outdone yourself IMHO!

.

Anyway, it won't be out for another year, but I wanted to share the great news with everyone!

Book 2 update: I deliver my book on June 1 (for the March 2021 release), so I'm in the last scramble and it is going very well.

perfect timing, as I should have finished his first book by then. I started reading it over the summer and haven't been able to finish it. Not because I didn't want to - the book is a page turner for Prince fans -it's just that I finally have some down time during this quarantine to dedicate more time to reading it. This is a great book - it's well-written and well-researched (unfortunately not the case for so many other Prince books that I've read); I'm really enjoying reading the details of Prince's recording sessions and cross-referencing them with the bootlegs. Really looking forward to the next book.

Why a song delay between the delivering in June & the publishing in March = 9 months ???

I am sure there will be edits and changes... Many times when a Book is "finished" and submitted it is read and edits and corrections are made... But I agree that is a long time.

It takes time to mass manufacture a book. This isn't print-on-demand like a lot of us indie authors do on Amazon. Plus, there is fact checking, adding missing pieces, etc. We want it done right, so the only real difference is that he announced it this early. If he had announced it in November or December, we'd think "Oh, just 3 months, no biggie." But folks have been really wanting this one, so it's nice he's let us know it's in the pipeline.

He said a few weeks ago that the info was leaked so he just made it public,

Ahh, makes sense even more then. I can wait for it. If it's spot on and exacting in the way the PR book was, it'll be worth it.

Whenever this volume comes out I will be ready for it! I was very impressed by Mr. Tudahl's coverage of the Purple Rain-era studio sessions. Like he says, this next book will cover a motherlode creative period of which the reporting I am sure will be extremely enlightening to me.

thumbs up!

There's also the simple fact of marketing. If a book like this can't be released by Halloween (ie, Christmas shoppers), it will often be delayed for a better date, and in the case a few weeks before the 5 year anniversary of his death is the perfect time. Remember, $ still makes the world go 'round.

I will be buying this of course, but to be honest I haven’t finished the first one yet! Dare I say it, I got abit bored of , and today this was recorded, and so on and so on. I guess it just showed how hard he worked in the studio and how prolific he was. Which was the point of the book right! I will shut up!

Hello to everyone! I wanted to let you know I'm nearly finished with book 2. I'm not on fb much lately as I'm still wrapping up everything. I will have a few transcripts that i need to double check (mostly the Sirius radio shows, and a few other (PUBLICLY POSTED BY OTHERS) interviews which were amazing!). Once I get this book done and delivered, I'll be back on here making comments, and cracking wise. I'll keep you all informed about the goings on.

.

Thank you to everyone who has helped with this project. You have been so amazing and I wouldn't be at this point without your help. I am so grateful. I'm sorry I've been scalp deep in wrapping up this book. It is going to be bigger than book 1. Cannot wait to get this info out there!

You are not alone - I got about half way thru & haven't picked it up again. I like it but it's not like a book with a plot which demands I read it straight thru. I'll get back to it but I'm not in any hurry.

Im about half way through. I read about 1/4 of it and put it down for several months due to being crazy busy. But now I'm back at it and very much enjoying it. For me it is best when I read about 30-45 minutes at a time, which works well since there is always a good stopping point.

I hope I don't finish until the next one is out so I can smoothly transition to it without any gap.
