Prince giving Shhh to Tevin Cambel Do you think that it was not appropriate from Prince to give a kid to sing a song about sex?Shhh is a very sexy rnb song and Tevin was like minor when he was singing it

I don't think it was inappropriate at all. Tevin Campbell was around 17 when this album was released it. Even the lyrics are tailored to him "do you after school like some homework" It is slightly risque but no more than "wake up suzie" Everly Brothers or "I'll make love to you" Boyz 2 men. Strange question.

But in music as you know that's common. I personally didn't think the song suit Tevin but he did a great job. and the other person who replied saying that the lyrics were tailored to Tevin,it was not, those are the original lyrics. The prince version is the best and I still love it to this day Eye wanna make Love to U,

Personally I found it creepy when Prince sung it. It's one of very few songs I generally skip. The song is from the point of view of a young adult (do you after school like some homework), the idea of an older guy singing it is a little too statutory rape for my liking. I loved Tevins version tho. 🍢

nothing "creepy" about Tevin doing that joint...its just a song ...and plenty of 17 year olds do fuck after school...its nature, not creepiness

The original lyrics written for Tevin. Tevin's version was years before Prince's version. [Edited 3/27/20 6:37am]

Tevin lost playing checkers with Prince and therefore had to record the 'rap' part in Round And Round, does that count?

Yes that is right. The first version released was the version was the version Prince released for Tevin in 1992 not the gold experience version. It seems likely the homework line was a simile used to match the singer Tevin. The original Prince version I believe is unheard. We only have the Shhh version that was released MUCH later. It is interesting that Prince kept the homework line in his version, I suppose that he felt it worked as an image.

Correct. And as someone also said Prince at a similar age was writing graphic songs. For example his first single was soft and wet with clever but graphic lyrics about sex/female arousal. Prince should have been able to sing soft and wet, and it was ok for Tevin to sing about sex. I mean look at the meaning and subtext of the Shirelles "Will he still love me tomorrow" [Edited 3/27/20 12:41pm]

I'd rather an actual teenager sing it as opposed to a 36 year old man singing about "doing you after you finish your homework".
.... but maybe Prince's lover was going back to college as an adult. [Edited 3/27/20 12:28pm] A certain kind of mellow.

I think Tevin was playing checkers but Prince was clearly playing chess.

Yet again a Prince fan fails at correctly spelling someone's piss-easy name. It's Campbell. Congrats on managing to include two spelling errors in one word! © Bart Van Hemelen

I love Prince music to death BUT...Tevin's version stomps all over Prince's version. Tevin sings it better, more vocal acrobatics, the bass guitar sounds better or maybe louder, plus the woman on it adds to it, Tevin sounds cooler doing the chorus...it's just a way better version than Prince's version.
Prince's version doesn't have the same atmospherics and I don't care about Prince's guitar on his version at all.
So...
As far as it being creepy, that's up to your individual opinion.

I think Prince did a lot of inappropriate things in his career and I loved most of them. "New Power slide...."

- Bwahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa (ocharme, hoe heten ze dat, een open deur intrappen?) - I never understood the law/concept of a 'minor' being able to have sex when 18yo. As if younger kids are not experimenting with it from a younger age on. I do understand a law is needed. But to state here that Tevin Campbell was too young to 'sing' about a romantic sexual driven sex song like ''Shhh''? Must be some prudish religion driven rule that I as a European can't possibly understand. - Imagine if Prince actually had kids... "Yes Bambi, daddy recorded and sang about all that when he was that young... Sex with my sister? Nono, that was just a hot made up fantasy..." - [Edited 3/27/20 23:21pm] "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

[Edited 3/27/20 6:37am] it's irrelevant who Prince wrote the lyrics for the fact of the matter is he wrote the lyrics, so obviously that was from his perspective. As a writer I can write a song about being my age or I can write a song about when I was 14 or 15 or 16 or whatever. Prince was always clever with his lyrics, do you after school like some homework is no different than when he said in Breakfast Can Wait, I'd rather have a glass of you. Eye wanna make Love to U,

So all those Vanity 6 tracks, "Nasty Girl", "Make-Up", "He's So Dull" you're with contemporary critics that these were examples of his latent/blatant gender-fluidity/bi-sexuality/homosexual leanings?? Orrrrr was this just him writing from another person's perspective, like, you know, writers do? [Edited 3/28/20 16:58pm]

Are you even a prince fan because it sounds like you don't appreciate art. P version is art, Tevin version is just a demo in comparison. at that age Tevin did not have life experience enough to pull that song off. So...

Interesting to readable the varied opinions on this song, it's clearly a song lots of people have an opinion on. I guess there are some songs that everyone agrees are undeniable pop perfection (Jughead, the Arms of Orion) and other songs people have varied opinions on. 🍢

You can do art a million ways but not everyone is going to like your art. That's life. That's real. I don't like every song that Prince does; it doesn't mean I'm not a fan. If Tevin's version was a demo, it still STOMPS all over Prince's studio version, even though Prince produced both versions. So...
