How "She's Always in my Hair" didn't wind up on ATWIAD as a lead single is one of them head scratchers. It would have made a great opening track for side 2 (or anywhere) and is better than any song on the album.

This was the beginning (or continuation one could argue) of Prince openly fucking with us. Obviously he did it before and always seemed one step ahead of "the game". The difference being that this was on the heels of the massive, world changing bomb of Purple Rain so him playing with folks was amplified.

"Raspberry Beret" is fine and a good song but imagine SAIMH htting radio stations out of nowhere in Spring of 85 similar to what he did with "When Doves Cry". I think that song's inclusion alone would have bumped reviews of the album up a star/number and would have generated a ton of buzz. But knowing Prince, he purposely relegated it to a b-side. He seemed like to feed us gradually, at his own pace, and keep us wanting. Seeking.

Come to think of it, all the b-sides from ATWIAD should have been on the album (Girl, SAIMH, Hello) but Prince was gonna Prince.

God bless him but it's a better record with those songs on it. Maybe not Hello which kind of feels like a b-side but the other 2 I think were more developed as the psychedlic tracks he was striving for and would have made for a stronger album.

Sorry for the rant.

You're not lying though.

Did he know how good the song was? Or was he just too occupied with creating new music and lost this track in the mix. Maybe he thought "It's just a song, nothing spectacular. Now listen to this instead Lisa, I call it Christopher Tracy's Parade. THAT is something special."

Gonna Be Lonely

Great song, the best along with I Wanna Be Your Lover from that record.

For me, I would vote for Do U Lie. Love the whimsical feel of the song, and fits so well on Parade, with that French theme running through it.

I would also say Lady Cab Driver (as one of my very favourite Prince songs) but I don't think that is overrated somehow.

This is my choice to. This track shows his skills but specially the drumming is truly insane on this and I never heared anyone compliment him on his drumming on this track.

We have a winner! And he did play it, at L.A. Live live back in 2009, on that 3 concerts in one night. The rockcentric club concert.

Yep I was there at the conga room & I was probably only a handful of people that recognized it, I was yelling for the trio to play the Undertaker in between songs but to no avail. Great night i'll never forget.

I recall reading somewhere that Wendy & Lisa said they tried guiding Prince in new directions, advising him against things that sounded "too Purple Rain." SAIMH, recorded in 1983, definitely sounds more PR than Around the World in a Day: no classical instruments or abstract lyrics, the flanged hi-hats sound like "Sex Shooter," and the piano chord rhythms sound like "The Beautiful Ones." I agree it probably could have been a big single, it's better than "Tamborine" and more accessible than much of ATWIAD, but Prince was "looking for the ladder," so to speak.

all things being equal, from and artistic, independent and overall "fuck off, I'm gonna do me" standpoint, ATWIAD was brilliant and absolutely the right call. The games he played with the industry, his fans and even sometimes his women allowed him to stay fresh and never quite disappear.

Someone of relevance once called him "the world's most famous underground artist" and I've always thought that fit and was an apt description. I always dug the way he went about things, turning left when everyone else went right and usually picking the right times to re-assert himself commercially.

He could frustrate me but he was always interesting.

“The world’s most famous underground artist,” that’s apt. He really did reward those who worked to find the hidden gems.

It's been a long time since we've had a legit discussion thread about this.

Which released song of his pre-1990 doesn't get as much love as it should?

I'm gonna start with Do Me Baby, one of my all-time favorite songs.

Two that are in some way are similar in that it is Prince at his most idealistic/dreamiest, The Ladder and Free. I know these and other songs in a similar vein got slammed by many here, but it is one facet of Prince that I appreciate as it adds another dimension to his music. Only Prince could go from purely sexual to upliftinng in consecutive songs. I agree with those who don't believe Free fit well into 1999, but the songs itself is one I really like.

One song that most people seem to like but not love is Uptown. To me, it is as good as any of his songs on his first 4 albums. It is so funky and fun to sing along well. Who can resist rhyming Puerto Riccan with freakin! I, for one, can't.

A piano only version of the ladder without such a long spoken word portion and more tuneful verses would have been masterful...it is too meandering and over instrumented to be mainstream...

I'm gonna go with songs that should have charted or charted higher..irrespective of being singles or not:

1. Gotta broken heart again and When you were mine.

2. Private joy and controversy.

3. Automatic and lady cab driver

4. Purple Rain ( should have been no 1) and Beautiful Ones.

5. Paisley Park and Shes Always in my Hair

6. Desire and Mutiny

7. Starfish and Coffee, Adore, If I was Your Girlfriend, Its Gonna Be a Beautiful Night, It

8. Cindy C, Good Love, Bob George (a hip hop remix by Dr Dre or Ice Cube could have killed)

9. Eye No, Anna Stesia, When 2 R in Love.
-->Glam slam and eye Wish You Heaven charted badly but both songs feel unfinished somehow though both have great melodies.

10.Vicky Waiting, Trust

11. Elephants and Flowers, New Power Generation (pt1..pt2 not so much) and Still Would Stand All Time

AwTIAD would have been so much better with a completely different track list including The Family Tunes:

Pop life
Shes always in my Hair
Desire
Raspberry Beret
Mutiny
Paisley Park
Nothing Compares 2 U (Susannah only vocal)
The Ladder (short and piano only)
High Fashion

Agree with all of them, I have always wondered, how come PR never made it to the top, it has everything to become a number one single.

Pop LIfe is great.

I remember listening to it in my car one day when I accidentally had the speakers flooded to one side and hearing the delayed vocals for the first real time in total isolation. They're layered maybe a second apart but the effect wasn't entirely apparent to me until that happened. Hendrix would do the same shit (Crosstown Traffic) on several songs.

Love this, p's.vocals are not discussed nearly enough. His use of multi-layering his voice to sound like a chorus is fantastic. 7 comes to mind immediately.

I was there too! The power trio of Prince, Sonny, and Michael B is one of my all-time favorite shows. Opening with "I'm Yours"??? Are you kidding me?!! I knew we were in for a treat when he played that first!

My most underrated song is, believe it or not, Sister. Such provocative lyrics, it comes out of nowhere, and rolls into Partyup effortlessly.

These songs you metioned could also have been on PR (my opnion)

He also didn't want to continue the whole fame thing, so a song "generating a ton of buzz" wasnt his intention at tha time.

Huh?

https://en.wikipedia.org/...o_Me,_Baby

"Do Me, Baby" is a 1981 ballad performed by Prince, from his fourth album, Controversy. It was released as the third and final US single from the album.

Although it was officially released as a single in the US (and in Peru according to The Vault eek ). I wouldn't consider Do Me Baby as a standard single release, but more a last miinute, lets milk this album as much as we can, type release.
More a release for the local radios and jukeboxes than anything else.
Definitely not considered or intended for those charts you quoted.

Peru? are you for real? do they even know Prince in Peru?

I never heard his music when I was there. I did hear The Beatles a lot. In the Barranca neighbourhood in Lima, I noticed a wall with paintings of rock stars on it. Bob Dylan Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson etcetera. No Prince.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.
