Record Store Day 2020: Sign 'O' The Times 2LP?

I've seen a couple of places mentioning a 2LP release of Sign 'O' The Times for this year's Record Store Day e.g.

https://exclaim.ca/music/...y_releases

https://www.vinyloftheday...mbassador/

.

This would seem somewhat odd to me if we're also getting a SOTT Deluxe box in the near future.

.

Has anyone heard any more about this release? I guess this is just a rumour at this point?

Hi Geetee71.

I've heard from YouTuber 'Purple Politician' that this has been announced by Warner Bros. / Rhino, but I couldn't find any official source. All the Google searches I did led me back to the 2019 RSD announcements.

French site schkopi.com has an article about Prince releases in 2020 and includes a section on SOTT for RSD.

"April is also the month of Record Store Day. Set this year to Saturday April 18, this new day dedicated to vinyl lovers and fans should be an opportunity for Prince fans to obtain new exclusive reissues. What will Warner and Sony offer this year? Rare maxis? A lost black album? Purple medley? Not really since Warner has just announced that it will be the double LP of "Sign O 'The Times" which will be offered. Curious choice especially when you know that the album should be reissued during the year in a remastered version (rest assured, we will explain everything a little below). Could this be a way to sell the stock from the previous pressing by just affixing an RSD sticker to make a difference ?! Unless, and it is much more likely, that it is a color pressing, probably peach in order to respect the color code of the time. Sony for its part has not announced anything to date, but the proximity of release with the collection "One Nite Alone" and "The Rainbow Children", available from the day before, will certainly have weighed in their desire to leave nothing."

1999 got a RSD release in 2018 with an alternative front cover.

It wouldn't be too shocking if Sign got a RSD release with a full Deluxe release in the fall.

Anyone here think it's possible, assuming Warners is planning a SIGN DELUXE later in the year, that they'll issue Sign as it was originally intended with 22 songs for RSD? Most of the discarded material eventually saw the light of day already - they'd hardly be spoiling any Deluxe beans and it'd be a great way to wet appetites for a Deluxe!

IMHO

"The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (Extended Version)" b/w "anything fom the era"

would be absolutely wonderful!!!

If that's not a purple Record Store Day dream come true...

This is an odd release for RSD 2020, it was reissued in 2016 unless this RSD issue contains 180 Gram records. Or maybe alternate back cover displays one of the tracks shIT, and alternate vocals something like I want to take a shIT all the time, all right, I could be guilty for pooping when watching Amazon Prime, all right, I got to tell you what you mean to me, all right, brb later baby I gotta take a pee, etc. Again a strange planned release for RSD 2020.

yeah this was a different release as it was the original single album version without DMSR or International Lover, and as you say, with different artwork.

It could be interesting. Some of the non US releases of SOTT had different artwork. Through out eastern Europe and Latin / South America, I believe the album was primarly released on cassette. Whereas in the US it was one double album, In many parts of the world it was released as SOTT Vol 1 and SOTT Vol 2 (Taiwan, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Portugal, Argentina, etc ...) ... On some of the releases, Vol 1 and Vol 2 had different artwork ... For RSD it could be cool if they released it similarly as a Vol 1 and Vol 2, different artwork for each volume, one on peach viny and one on black ...

I know the early RSD list indicates "2LP", but perhaps it's a peach-colored double cassette, as they released The Versace Experience on cassette 4 last year's RSD.

Or it could be just the non-re-mastered version on peach and black double vinyl. Maybe the SOTT re-mastered version is delayed until next year, and they're doing this RSD release like they did with the single vinyl 1999.

Or perhaps they've already completed the SOTT re-mastering and are ready 2 release SOTT Super Deluxe, in which case the "2LP" could just be a place-holder 2 get stores excited.

They release TVE on cassette because that was the only format it was released on initially. I doubt they would do the same with SOTT.

Yep, and it's a pretty boring list for non-Prince artists as well for me, so it looks like I get to skip this year.

A good plan... I have no idea what to pick up this year... I will peek at the RSD list which I expect it to be released anytime soon plus it's a tradition to be there like a celebration, meeting fellow collectors, etc
