Don’t Piss in the Wind and Call It Purple Rain

This is my report and review of the Grammy/Prince “Tribute” Show.

https://vocal.media/beat/...e-a9c30s63

Response to (specifically one Orger - he knows who he is) but also anyone who doesn’t understand where I’m coming from.

1. I got the ticket that day, hours before the show.

2. I was aware there would be filming of a concert. I wasn’t aware it would be a television production. The two are NOT the same.

3. I mentioned I do not fault the artists.

4. I never complained about the sound. Glad you agree about the seating.

5. This wasn’t a Prince concert. But, what’s your point? That people should accept being treated this way? As a brown person over 50, I know this treatment all too well. I make it a point to not accept this treatment and to speak against it when it happens. Everyone should.

6. I didn’t go to ‘hate watch’. I was extremely excited to go to this. I wanted to see Sheila E. again, and I had never seen The Revolution before. I still haven’t, if being treated like a criminal is the price tag? I’m not going to pay it.

7. I was so looking forward to this. I didnt go in hostile, I went in excited and humble. I left hostile and disappointed.

8. I felt the love - I joined in on the love, but if you think I’m going to accept shoddy treatment, think again.

9. (For one Orger in particular) I don’t need you to deem whether what I say, report, write or feel is credible to you or anyone. I write for me. I write for what I believe in and how I think things should be. I love Prince and have supported and promoted him and his music for over 40 years - so, don’t think I am just talking out of my ass.

If I were to be mistreated and stayed, I wouldn’t be me, and I refuse to be treated that way.

WOW! shake what the shit!! I'd be pissed too! I'm sorry your evening ended up like that, and I'm sure PRINCE wouldn't want that for you either.

I sure do appreciate all that you do for the ORG and for those of us with love in our heart for PRINCE. I'll continue to spread the purple love in any way I can.

I'm glad you gave it a shot, better luck next time. Just not at a Grammy tribute thingy. hmph!

Wow, what a bad experience and really bad that you were treated like that, I also thought it was a full on concert and that's how it was advertised I think. And even having to pay for it rolleyes

A little correction tho, Prince did use corporate sponsors (Coca-Cola during the ACT3 Tour, Verizon) and funny enough Little Red Corvette (the SOTT concert veriosn) was used yeaqrs ago on a Chevrolet commercial.

Prince did not hate other artists singing his songs. Even when he did try and play if off like he did, we all knew it was low-key hypocritical because he was covering artists at his own desire. He chose many people to sing his music throughout his career. It's completely invalid for anyone to speak on behalf of Prince's wants/desires/thoughts whether he's dead or alive.

.

Also, seriously think before you say he never had corporate sponsership. No tour, album, campaign, or product really sells to the masses without the help of corporate sponsership. Sure, he never had his music in an Old Navy commercial, but that doesn't mean he hasn't partnered with corporations to help sell his music.

.

Sorry you had a shitty experience.

Because it wasn’t in the regular opened thread it makes it seem the author has an axe to grind.

In all of Prince’s touring years and all of his productions, he never had a corporate sponsor. He never had a commercial, he never had anything that he considered an ad

.

This is patently untrue. Coca-Cola sponsored a tour (and was all over it: on the tickets, on the video screens, even had a massive rotating thingy in the middle of the concert hall IIRC), his music was used in commercials (numerous threads on this site offer plenty of proof), and for Verizon he recorded an exclusive video for "Guitar" that they used as a commercial.

.

Can you imagine a red Corvette using the song Little RedCorvette?

.

Yes, because it happened in an ad for the 2003 Chevrolet SSR.

.

Also note that for the Rave 1999 PPV special, fans also had to pay to attend while celebs got in for free, and the celebs could enter quickly while the fans were freezing their butts of waiting outside.

.

I was there too.

There was no mentioned in the advertising/ticket sales that no video/pics were allowed or that it was a taping (to my knowledge).

Once my friend and I got there the signs were way small. And the ushers were extremely anal about pictures and telling people not take pics. There were feeeeeeeeeeew people being asked to delete their pictures while at their seats...i didnt see anybody being escorted out just to delete their pictures and then told they could get back in. They majority of times the ushers in my area just told people dont take pics. So the fact they escorted you out it super whack.

The other part that bugged me was that on the venue map there was no indication that there was going to be a camera setup in the middle of the venue. So when I got there the video cameras in the middle was obstructing our views of the stage as we were behind it. If it was shown on the ticket website i would have gotten seats to the sides.

In the initial announcement and all announcements thereafter, the April airing is mentioned. If not for a TV crew, how would this occur?

My fault I stand corrected. I was referencing the details sent to me when I bought my ticket which I see now that this would be aired at a later date. However there is no mention of not taking pics or videos. And the signs at the venue were small.

Seriously, though. If this is being recorded for broadcast at a later date, there is no way taking photos or videos would be allowed. That is just common sense.

Makes sense when I think about it. I've just never been to a taping.

I get the sense the basic premise of a Grammy show was offputting to the OP to begin with.

The taping, Grammy sponsorship, crappy venue, etc. would have been all known to the original ticket purchaser and shouldn't have been a surprise even if they weren't ideal.

But holy crap...they stopped the show and did multiple takes!?

Why didn't they just do two tapings like they do for comedy shows, and other tapings? There's no way that didn't effect the audience or other acts.

Also, if we're using Prince's standards for what he would have wanted on a tribute event.... he was a bit obsessive about the cellphones and photos on the P & M tour, for what it's worth. Marching someone out of a venue and forcing them to delete a photo is unacceptable though. What would even be the point, it's going to air, it's going to have tons of promo photos circulating.

I'm glad they are doing tributes outside of Paisley Park though, and glad there are tributes airing where a wider fanbase will get to take part.
