It was clearly up to the young Prince to adapt to this audience, like, if you go to a jazz Festival, well, you perform jazz. . He should have performed rock in front of the audience of the Rolling Stones (I m yours, Bambi, Part Up, Ronnie talk to Russia, Annie Christian) without emphasinging so much on his [Snip - luv4u] look. .

Rod, you trying to get yourself banned or something? lol. Dont go out like that.

According to Mick Taylor, "About five minutes after we arrived, just after we got out of the helicopter, I was with Mick [Jagger] and there were a couple of security guards with us, and a guy broke through and punched [Jagger] in the face."

.

One Hells Angels member jabbed Stephen Stills in the leg with a bicycle spoke several times. Ace of Cups' Denise Jewkes suffered a fractured skull from a thrown beer bottle. As Jefferson Airplane played, Marty Balin noticed a group of Angels attacking a man near the stage and tried to break it up. An Angel hit him in the scuffle, knocking Balin unconscious, and causing him to miss the rest of his band's set.

.

As members of the Hells Angels began kicking, punching, and hitting concertgoers with shortened pool cues, an abundance of wine, speed, and acid helped fuel their behavior. Not only did the Angels go after people who came too close to the stage, but they also interfered with the bands in order to get to those they felt were breaking the rules.

They walked across the stage in the middle of sets, grabbed microphones from people trying to make announcements, and gunned their bike engines while bands played, drowning out the music. A photographer made the mistake of taking pictures of the Angels and ended up with his film confiscated and a swollen face. Somewhere between 100 and 200 Angels stood on the stage throughout the show, leaving very little room for the bands to perform.

This is from the hells angels behavior. Not the crowd. The HA terrorized the Altamont concert that day. This was 1969. Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death by the HA for brndashing a gun. Its a controversy becasue in the doc Gimme Shelter, its not sure if he brandished the gun because he was being attacked or before.

Nothing the crowd did warranted the violent actions of the hells angels. wtf?

No it didn't warrant that level lol and again Prince got out of that show relatively safe, Jagger got punched lol the HA were probably still 'fans' of the and the Dead

The cool thing is....just a few years after this fiasco,Prince was on top of the music world.Suddenly, everyone wanted to see him in concert.

Everyone says this but I dont agree that half or the critical ones in that 1981 Stones audience gave a fuck about Purple Rain or seeing him in concert still.

you may be right

I have a hard time believing there were a lot Hells Angels in the crowd unless they were specifically there to settle a score with Jagger over Altamont.

They may have LOOKED like Angels but for years (over a decade) the Hells Angels very pointedly were not into Jagger's act and repeatedly called him out for the stabbing of Meredith Hunter and what they felt were the Stones scapegoating them for how it played out in the media reports, interviews with the band and in the movie Gimme Shelter.

The Hells Angels HATED Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones.

Ok. Polite English speaking Americans don't call people "[Snip - luv4u]" so much anymore unless they are bigots. I'll take you at your word (and I reported you earlier) but calling people [No excuse for you using homophobe slur either snip - luv4u] is decidedly not good.

Thanks.

This has just reminded me of a huge 2-day concert I attended in Europe, 1985. It was at the old Olympic stadium in Athens. The lineup included the CLash, the Cure, Depeche Mode. Culture Club came on and when that enormous (and largely homophobic) crowd got a sight of Boy George, the booing, name-calling etc was relentless. The band had to leave the stage without finishing the show. It was really so sad. It had to have been such a humiliating experience for him.

I went to my first Rolling Stone concert in 1975 (and many more times after that year) and I can assure you it wasnt a "middle aged" audience. I guess you could say the audience was very "conservative" because there were lots of pills and weed being passed around. rolleyes rolleyes

Right. The middle age audience began with the Steel Wheels tour. The 1981 Los Angeles audience was young and dumb.

Also, I heard he opened that concert with "Jack U Off". Is that true? That was a bad idea.

That was certainly a bold move smile

He was always BOLD, just on the cutting edge, I think it just did not work for him at this particular show. I have been to other rock concerts in that era, and sometimes the "warm up" act just doesn't do it for the crowd. I don't think race was the biggest contributing factor. Although we all know Prince was straight, these cats at the show probably weren't sure which way he swung. During that era (It was mine, so yeah...) gays were not generally treated well at all.

I've only just heard Lisa's description of what happened. She even said Prince changed the line up to try to appeal to more of a rock vibe. Poor Mark his very first time. She never said if anything was thrown directly at her and Wendy or the others as I think about. Seems they've been boo'd before but this was brutal.

I thought all opening acts got booed at Stones concerts, at least in the past. It's just part of it.

I'm not sure how I came to believe this but that's always been my understanding; either I read it or a fan explained it to me. Mick and/or the whole band would choose opening acts who deliberately contrasted with the band in some way, and the fans would predictably "reject" them, "demanding" the Stones come out. The more contrast, the worse the reaction.

This could be totally incorrect. smile I do know a superfan though who's been to hundreds of shows and even appeared in some of their live concert films (this lady somehow always makes it to the front row), so maybe I'll ask her sometime.

Not really. The first time I saw the RS, the opening acts were Tower of Power, J Geils Band, Joe Vitale's Madmen. None were booed. Billy Preston was also playing keyboards for the RS, with his huge fro. Awww, I miss Billy.

I might add, had I been at a RS concert and P was an opening act, I would not have booed him.

So there has to be another explanation for the boo's toward P and the Revolution.

Good points. Next time I see my dad in person I will ask him to elaborate on the crowd and his "Hells Angels-types" comments to me. And I will ask my co-worker as well for she was more up front at that concert as compared to my dad. The overall sense I picked up from them when they spoke of P being booed off the stage was it was because of his attire- the bikini briefs and his so-called prancing around the stage. I will also ask them from their perspective if they believe race had to do with it. They both knew about his music even back then. They just both felt it was not a good line-up booking and did not make sense for that crowd even being in L.A.

Different indeed...

This is the first time I am hearing that Prince performed LAST before the Rolling Stones came up. Every documentation I have ever read or heard about this tour...Prince was the first act before George Thorogood/Destroyers and J Geils Band.

EDIT:

Just went back to The Questlove Supreme podcast when he interviewed The Revolution. They (Bobby, Brown, Fink....Wendy and Lisa were a separate interview) all confirmed they went first, so I'm not sure what you mean by Prince going last.
