No Bart he redid his book and added to it, a few years back. We did read it, we even had a book club here on the Org about it.

It's amazing how some of you fail to READ WHAT IS WRITTEN. He's talking about Rise & Fall, I EXPLICITELY mention Hahn has recently written a new book (and sorry, but it is barely related to Rise & Fall, despite it starting out as an update of it, so don't even pretend they're the same).

The correct expression is "bear in mind".

Lots of the footage etc. in the Hutchence doc is very intimate and lots of the people involved were extremely open; it's yet to be seen whether such footage exists of Prince or whether those that were close to him are willing to open up.

.

More relevant would be to compare it to the Bowie docs done in recent years by the BBC -- but here as well I doubt something similar can be done WRT Prince, because for the Bowie docs they had access to plenty of interviews Bowie had done over his lifetime.

I read where Lenny Kravitz said Prince video recorded a specific time together when recording music and gave him a copy. Prince told him it was for his personal use only. It would be great if Lenny shared that. I'm sure there is plenty of footage like that with other artist as well.

.

I'm talking about non-music footage, e.g. people in an informal setting. As is clear from the context.

I should have been more clear; if I'm not mistaken, he did mention some of the footage was just hanging out. I could be wrong.

Some great points made. Here's a question.

What do you want the documentary to be / consist of?

As BVH rightly points out it's a documentary not a jukebox. In my head I saw Ava's series as a safe , celebration of P & all his talents. Lots of interviews from friends, family & various band members / artsitic associates etc & FILLED with loads of unseen clips. Essentially a much bigger, better version of the classic BBC1 Omnibus doc.

However , if it is to be a documentary in the truest sense of the work it would cover the engative aspects too? i.e. career dips, poor treatment of those around him & of course his fnal days / battle with dependancy.

I would actually prefer a balance of the 2 & over the course of say 6 episodes - if that is still the plan? - there is much scope for a wide ranging picture of our man.

one more note...genuinely bored of hearing the Revolution being interviewed over & over. Really hope we get NPG 95, 3rd Eye Girl, close family, close friends, individuals from charities he has helped out & many others too for the talking heads spots.

You can just skip the episodes that deal with the 80s.

I think people need to stop mentioning things like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocket Man, this is not going to be a bi-opic it's a documentary which is a good thing. If it turns into a bio piece it's going to be ridiculous regardless who does it, because they test focus those things. Queen the, selves admit there is a lot of things in the movie that did not happen at all, as for the Elton piece is way too Hollywood, I'd rather see a documentary on Prince and hear from people around him rather than some bad actor in a wig doing cheesy lines. You should and they should watch a documentary called MYSTIFY just done by Richard Lowenstein about Michael Hutchences life and death.

I just wanted to clarify why I mentioned Bohemian Rhapsody. That movie was a 'white-wash' of Freddy Mercury and that is my concern about any 'treatment' of Prince. I am hoping the director feels free to present Prince as full-fleshed out and does feel pressured to stick to the party line.

And as Bart mentioned, that those close to him feel free to really open up.

It can be done properly, the Michael Hutchence documentary that was just released is the real deal and it comes 23 years after his death, so it takes time to do these things right, but its different than Queen or Elton, those had actors and treatments this was bare bones, usued interviews of michael, new interviews with those closest to him, some family interviews. Its tough to pull off, already there was a cheesy bi-opic done on INXS in australia and it was a nightmare, fabrications, and tabloid like. I would rather them wait a decade for a Prince proper documentary, no actors, no cheesy endings.

Didn't like the Whitney doc because it went into areas (sexuality/drug use) that no one could explain properly except her and since she didn't it should have been left alone. It hurt to see her friends and family speculating on her motivations like that in an official documentary from the estate. I feel like, just from life experience having friends who have gone through similar things, they mischaracterized her experiences in a way that was exploitative and not representative of the feelings someone might have who'd lived the way they claimed she did. Something was missing.

Didn't like the John Lennon doc because it painted a crude and unflattering picture of Lennon. I almost threw up at the part where they tell us ad nauseum how Yoko was "speaking through" him.

I think a Prince documentray that sticks to the music and doesn't try to explain too much or break news on the man himself would be awesome. I really would hate to see them tear him apart for a few extra clicks.

The problem is, you have to nit pick everything, even though some of us already knew what he was talking about.

You just aren't happy unless you are nit picking.every.single.thing.

Did anyone else watch the recent 'Mystify: Michael Hutchence' movie?

Like the Amy Winehouse film 'Amy' is was fantastic (if not sad).

Baring in mind that there is probably ten times more recorded archive footage on Prince, in the right hands it could be one hell of a documentary.

-

I absolutely loved the "Mystify" doc about Michael Hutchence.

Great also to see that artists like Kylie, Paula Yates, etc, were willing to collaborate.

Or better, It seemed that they were were willing to collaborate.

(I don't have any insight or truth on that.)

-

It is a truely vulnurable and touching documentary.

Loads of private footage.

I hadly can't believe there is as much private footage or Prince, who was such a control freak.

MYSTIFY was a work of art, I have not seen anything done better yet. The thing that made this was Richard Lowenstein who was a HUGE part of early INXS videos and there was lots of footage shot and also others turning over footage that had, he was able to get interviews with people like Kylie Minogue and others and then also weave that around Michaels own interviews and footage. I hope this is the avenue they take with Prince, I mean Michael has been gone for 23 years now, and they were working on this for a few, so with Prince dont rush something, please, take the time, if we dont get something for a decade I dont mind but i just dont want it being something poorly put together. The Hutchence doc was just released today on Apple Itunes and TV and then getting a wider Blu ray release on March 31st.

The documentary on Coldplay is also a very good one.

Although it is completely different on the subject.

Stil very well done.

-

My guess is that The Estate has lots of footage of rehearsals etc,

but like always,

they might use it for a documentary in the future,

but it could be a good one, or just crap.

-

People that were around Prince after 1984, probably have few private footage.

Or they could've possibly signed some sort of contract to not use it, whatever... If you understand what I mean.

Since then most of his protegées, employees and surrounders were basically all on his on his payroll, thus in some sort of contractual obligations.

And we all know how private he liked to be, and how seclusive he lived his private life.

My guess, besides some rehearsal footage (which already would be great), ther is very very few private material.

Maybe Mayté knows or has more ?

I'm not sure Paula Yates had much say in the matter somehow. razz
