The problem isn't Usher, who to me seemed like he was havin g a good time, especially as it went on.

The problem is that whoever they get to do a tribute is not Prince, and therefore is destined to be a disappointment.

At this point maybe thay should get that guy that did the bio-pic that looks just like him, give him enough singing lessons to hopefully mimic Prince, and hope for the best.

Thought it was excellent. Fans on here hated Prince's own awards show performances so no wonder really the hate on here & social media. 4 years since his passing & is still being celebrated - be proud & grateful that we shared his journey in real-time.

It was pretty much a yawn, what a wasted opportunity. Thinking out loud but I would of brought the house down with Cyndi Lauper doing When You were Mine & ending with Gary Clark doing The Cross but no, we're left watching a generic & uninspired Usher performance? And what was up with the band levels?

Prince would lite the stage on fire, Usher couldn't start kindling.

Something like that would be cool.

I mean a promo for the Grammy tribute concert. Sheila E is basically musical director for that and she was on stage last night.

I guess this is about your issues with Sheila. yawn

What issues with Sheila? All I'm saying is she's MD for this tribute concert and was on stage last night so maybe this was a promo of what to expect for the tribute concert.

can't find it online anywhere sad

OK I found it on Cbs. It wasn't as bad as I had read. though I don't like Usher, i just focused on Sheila. They should've just let her lead it.

.

.The band was great. I thought I heard a little mistake with the beat during Little red corvette but otherwise the band and everyone else was good. Usher is just no Prince.

I am very excited about this. There are so few artists that are honored with this sort of tribute and one of the most vital things that fans/fams can do is to extend Prince's legacy to the next generation. Without engaging the next generation of fans/fams, Prince will leave us again.

Let's find a way to work as one to bring everyone together and help inspire the next wave of music fans.

He can't do that anymore, so it is up to us to do the heavy lifting. I'm very happy to do my small part.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

What kind of Prince fan doesn't know Lauper covered that song on her hit debut album?

I didn't. But then I'm probably not a "real fan" in your eyes. Although I would probably see it as a case of me not being a Cyndi Lauper fan more than me not being a Prince fan but you know, each to their own and all that.

Just to weigh in (I may be wrong, here), but Cyndi Lauper is in her 60's and Emma is 29 (I think).

Not all of us were around for Cyndi's reign. (I was, but still...)

Never liked her rendition of the song, though. Glad the tribute was without her. Cindy should continue to follow her own path, not look back to the 1980s, like (OMG!) Aerosmith & Rund DMC did at the Grammys.

Down bart easy boy. Don't want to discourage the youngin's.

Speaking of Lauper I'll never forget P leaving her to improvise at a studio 54 aftershow in Vegas. She kept looking over her shoulder waiting for him to join her & he would just stand there making funny faces , too funny. I was impressed wiith her improve skills.. They eventually went into "I can't stand the rain" by Ann Peebles & tore it up.

The performance was disappointing. Usher really can't sing anymore. Sheila E was inaudible.

I just hope it will increase Prince sales and streaming, that's the only point of that tribute anyway.

lol No doubt!! He was floating around that stage like “what the??!!! NO, just NOOOO!!!! I would have rather watched clips of Prince’s live performances of those songs on the big screen. Dancers - strange, Usher - far from Prince.
*
My thought was why didn’t they have The Revolution (with Sheila) playing? After all, they were the original live players on those songs.
*
I get the “carry the legacy of Prince on to the younger listeners thing, but the performance last night ain’t gonna make that happen confused

Compared to Walk This Way, the Prince tribute was stellar!

Seriously, I would not pay to see either Steven Tyler or Run DMC perform again.

Even the two bimb girls that Tyler brought up couldn't do a basic dance, it was sad.

The Revolution is performing tonight for the actual full length tribute along with the Time, Susanna Hoffs...the Grammys tribute (the one you are referencing now was just a few songs and supposed to be a preview of the upcoming tribute that is happening.

Sheila should just do the Family Jamm again.

.

At the time they kept saying "First, ANNUAL" and of course never did it again.

.

.

it should be the same line up too.....: Jill Jones, Appolonia (this time do A6 with Brenda and Susan and perform Sex Shooter), Madhouse, The time (Morris can show up this time), The Family, Madhouse, Sheila E original band, and The Revolution.

.

.

No NPG or 3rdEyeGirl

I know, but still would have made more sense for The Revolution to play at the Grammys, as they were the original band, they know how the songs should be played, and they still sound great.
*
And I don’t really get Susannah Hoffs for the April tribute. Yes, I know Manic Monday, but that was with The Bangles (not her solo) and it was one song. The Family should be performing - not her.

Alicia Keys, John Legend, Usher, Foo Fighters, Beck set to perform with musical director Sheila E.

Alicia Keys, John Legend and Usher will perform at a special Prince tribute concert set to take place after the 2020 Grammy Awards and air on television later this year, Rolling Stone has confirmed.

Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince
will be held January 28th – two days after the Grammys – at the Los Angeles Convention Center and will be broadcast in April. Past Prince percussionist Sheila E. will serve as the night’s musical director alongside longtime Prince associates Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The lineup also includes Beck, Common, Foo Fighters, H.E.R., Earth, Wind & Fire, St. Vincent, Mavis Staples, Chris Martin, Gary Clark, Jr. and Juanes.

There's more in the link.

U know, I REALLY WISH it was "Full-Time (Morris/Jerome/Jesse/Jimmy Jam/Terry/Monte/Jellybean)" & NOT "Part-Time" !!!

It's produced by the Grammy's for broadcast in April.

The network will stream it, and then it will probably go. to Hulu or one of those for a limited time.
