It's 2020. What do you think of Madonna's P tribute now?

I admit, in 2016 when Madonna performed her P tribute, I didn't watch much of it, and what I did watch of it, I couldn't keep a straight face.

Now I've watched it after-the-fact, I realise that the tribute, while poorly performed, was appropiately planned. Prince was a quiet, romantic man and perhaps best known for his slow, moody songs like Purple Rain and Nothing Compares 2 U, because he wanted to evoke spirituality and human bonding in a loving, sensual way. It wouldn't make purpose if the tribute was loud, banging music - really. Yes, Prince made a lot of loud, dancey music, but he is known more for being quiet and romantic - it was part of his mysterious image.

The planning for the tribute was appropiate and relevant. Madonna knew P more than the public did, so she had good intentions.

So yeah, I've changed my mind about Madonna's tribute - of course people wouldn't go too nuts over planning a tribute for P like they would for MJ - two completely different artists and people. The appearance of Steve Wonder wasn't bad either. I just don't think people should go "oh, Prince was so wonderful, he was so great... humble yourself like he" - doesn't make sense. So the tribute was ahead of its' time, in that people "didn't get it" and just got angry.

I thought it was horrible then, and I think it is just as horrible now.

We should respect artists more.

Her intentious were absoluty good.

Her performance was maybe mediocre to others.

But she did what she wanted to do for a good old friend, and that is to pay tribute in her own way through a public performance.

Don't forget they have the same age, it make you think of your own mortality.

-

All other tributes were different, good, mediocre or great.

Respect what people do for other artists.

It also reminds them of what could happen to them personally.

It's about the intention towards a coleague.

I loved it then and love it now. It was sincere and heartfelt. I love Madonna.

The sincerity was definately there.

Time need to think it out more. I know 'happier' songs can come across as not respectful, but I think more upbeat songs would have done her tribute justice.

It was an absolute shit-fest that made me question humanitys worthiness to continue. Besides that, it was fine.

Seriously, she should still be embarrassed by that garbage.

Cant believe how people trash this. Its a tribute, doesnt have to be perfect. She is singing for a collegue she knew personally (unlike people who trash this performance) for years who died. What do you expect?

Didn't she do Pussy Control? I thought that was pretty cool. I haven't watched it since it happened but as a tribute from one artist to another it was done with love even if it was mostly shit. I haven't dug anything she's done recently anyway and I don't think she's worth the high ticket prices she has for her concerts so.. that's my 2 cents.

I don't expect tacky self-aggrandising and slap-dash fancy dress karaoke. Oh wait, it's Madonna, yes I do.

It was garbage then and it's still garbage now. No thought put into it whatsoever. As bad as Bruno Mars at the Grammys, which was just bad karaoke.

I do love when people qualify the performance with emphasis on "she knew him personally," as if knowing someone personally absolves you from doing a lackluster tribute to them. If anything that makes it even more egregious.

And Madonna fans know they'd trash someone diluting her career to outfits she wore 40 years ago and "Like a Virgin" or "Material Girl," don't get it twisted.

The only tribute that's been worth a shit was the D'angelo one, imo.

.

Madonna's was pretty bad and so was Sheila E's. Hardcore cringe when Sheila tried to slide on the stage and it looked like she was about to hurt herself. On top of her hoarse, mumbled vocals. Pass.

.

Can't wait for this new tribute coming up to see even more hoarse mumbling from her and the Revolution.

Dressing up like Prince and acting like Prince is NOT a tribute to Prince, so yeah, perhaps D'Angelo was one of the few who got it right.

It's specifically the June of 1984 fashion dressing I take umbridge with. If someone did cosplay in those slick Musicology-era suits he used to rock I'd probably be down.

I thought Madonna's tribute was terrible in 2016 and still do now. She is unable to sing Prince's music.

It made me cringe....I DO feel she came from a good place...but unfortunately for her,

Princes Music is not easy to sing...and Her performance highlighted her vocal weaknesses....

J Los tribute on the other hand was FIRE...

Sharing the stage with Stevie Wonder was a misjudgment on Madonna's part. He blew her away. His vocals highlighted how weak her vocals were.

Perhaps Sheila's hoarse and mumbled vocals were due to her emotions welling up inside her? Did you see her face (and Mayte's) when she was finished? To me she looked like she was in emotional pain and there was anger underneath that as she looked out on the crowd. I can only imagine what she might have been thinking at that moment. Something along the lines of 'Y'all better recognize that one of, if not THE, greatest musician/artist the world has ever known is now gone and we will never be blessed with his presence/love again.' She probably felt that this performance was going to be the one true lasting tribute from her that she was ever going to deliver onstage. Her emotions were raw. She loved Prince, everyone knew it. I give her and Mayte major props for their performance that night.

I agree 100%. Sheila's tribute was the only I felt was worth watching, the only one that felt appropriate and the only one that made me feel anything, period. She was up there performing for Prince. Emotional, raw tribute... she couldn't even hold back the fuck in erotic city haha. Good choice of songs too. Trying to sing his ballads to him? For him? Is stupid. Sing that shit to your bitch or to your man or to God. Don't sing it to prince, that's not funky.

The best way to put it is, she was totally outclassed live by the BET show performers. Just singing a song by Prince is not going to cut it when he set the bar SO SO high himself. Unless of course, you can blow people away with some extraordinairy power...like Jennifer Hudson.

To me, what MDNA exposed is that she was a flaccid talent compared to the giant that was Prince.
