More than enough times to recognize it as a solid, promising debut... that happens to not be as strong as the 14 or so albums that proceeded...

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Every one of these are just incredible. Just even making this list I was thinking about each album and how I listen to it from Top to Bottom all the time and how perfect they are. 12 albums in a Row full of creativity and genius.

I have it in the lower half simply because the other albums are even better, but i tell you one thing:

For You is easily the most played regular Prince-album in my CAR. For as much as i love Prince's music, I don't appreciate it as being my soundtrack on the road. It just doesn't work for me.
Not that For You is my perfect driving buddy, far from, but I would listen to it and enjoy it more in those circumstances.

Notable expection are his NON-regular bootlegs. I played a few of them to absolutely death in my car. One of them (a mixtape) I must have played like 3 years in constant rotation in my car biggrin

It’s decent but nowhere near as good as the others, IMO. It has 3 songs I absolutely love, 3 I quite like, 2 I am pretty meh about, and 1 that I find completely unmemorable despite having heard it dozens of times.

i feel prince's albums kept getting better from his debut until he reached his pinnacle with sott/black album. he fell of a cliff after that with a few exceptions.

word...i remember Batman being the first Prince album i ever bought, where after i played it, i was disappointed and wanted my money back...strangely its grown on me over the years...but upon first listen, it was such a drastic falloff from the great Lovesexy album.

im more suprised the Dirty Mind album doesnt show up as #1 on more lists...thats one of the rare perfect albums in music history...not only were all the songs completely different and amazingly crafted, but that shit sounded so good at high volume on a banging system... the guitars and bass and drums sound so clear and crispy it never fails to touch my soul...the mix on When U Were Mine & Party Up sound like P is in the same room playing right next to me...still

Prince had the most unique timing when playing rhythm guitar... maybe his most overlooked skill... he wasnt "chucking" and "Chicken Scratching" or "chanking" (however you personally refer to it) bar after bar, with multiple hammer-ons like Al McKay or Nile Rodgers or Jimmy Nolen...he'd pick and pluck a quick little rhythmic riff or melody and then let the groove breathe every other bar or so...like on "Head" or "Party Up" or "Love 2 the 9's"

First 6 all brilliant in their own way. I have to admit that I never liked 1999 as much as many around here, but I have a new appreciation for it and that whole era with the new box set. He was on fire back then! Can't stop playing all the different CDs from it.

That's just what I like and prefer to listen to. Obviously, if I was saying is For You objectively better than SOTT, then no it would be quite a different list, duh. There's not a bad fucking album in there with Batman being the only outlier imo. And to say that LS, SOTT and PR are some of the lowest ranking albums is ridiculous. What you're really looking at is a very, very, very close top 11 and then a somewhat distant #12.

Dirty Mind is my all time fave. Bought the Vinyl as a kid and always played side 2 as side 1. And you're spot on about the crispness of the recording. It sounds impossibly clean and uncluttered. Side note: I was last years old when I realized that he is posing in front of bedsprings. Always thought it was just some cool, abstract background. Derp. duh
