While most ecstasy users find the drug pleasant in effect, it can trigger feelings of anxiety and panic, which are heightened by the stimulant effects of the drug. Ecstasy also has hallucinogenic properties, so it can trigger a bad trip.

.

.

Yes, but the science is not clear on this. The problem with studies about illegal drugs is that those drugs are, well, illegal (or, more precisely, controlled), so you don't know what people have really ingested, unless you're in a controlled environment and give the substance to the participants yourself, which is what is usually done with more recent studies about MDMA, LSD, psilocybin, etc.

.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih....d/12691210

.

The findings suggest that most negative experiences with Ecstasy can be attributed to the interaction between two or more factors, nearly always involving set or setting. Although various analyses have shown that the same "brand" of Ecstasy can contain varying degrees of MDMA, other drugs and adulterants, results from the present study suggest that users' expectations of the drug's effects appear to be related to the brand or label of Ecstasy that is consumed. The role of individual disposition in producing negative drug experiences is less clear; it is possible that this factor might interact with user set or friends' set in contributing to the overall drug experience.

.

I would personally bet on impure ecstasy, but we'll never know... smile

I wouldn't call TBA a weaker album in comparison to LoveSexy at all. Indeed, I think the darker tone and mystique may have given it a better boost than the poor showing LoveSexy received in the USA. Neither one was remotely geared toward radio but TBA was very edgy for the time, at least.

I actually prefer the BLACK album over Lovesexy.

I listen to it all the way through way more than Lovesexy

.

I'm with you, OldFriends. The Black Album, to me, was the last of the "perfect" albums. As in, almost listenable start to finish without major flaws (sure, every album had the "lesser" song, Free, Purple Rain, Paisley Park, Live Can Be So Nice, Slow Love, 2 Nigs United For West-Compton), but LoveSexy... it was just too uneven, too ill conceived (Alphabet Street and When 2 Are In Love sound completely out of place with totally different production, the production on the other tracks is over the top and doesn't let the tracks breath very well, it's got that horrible preaching in there (more grating, to me, than The Rainbow Children)

.

LoveSexy is where he went, in my world, from being a god, to being "merely" an absolutely interesting and tremendous musician. He never recovered and the first few years after LoveSexy dropped were difficult, with him releasing so many tracks from the before time that were so much better than most of the tracks surrounding them on the albums.

The only thing with the BLACK album, is that RHIAFP is that 'standout' track that is clearly Camille. Musically it sound crisper than everything else on it. I always think about what could have filled that spot. But I love everything about it. It kills me to know they were ready to go into the Black Album era by November Decemeber. Sorta like the Dream Factory era was ready to go...

LOL! I do have an original bootleg album but even the newest 'legit' Warner Bros. release still has a very slight hiss to it (it's there if you do some adjusting to your bass/treble levels trust me). A few folks on here think that Prince wanted it this way.

Yes I do. That song is an example of why Prince became a recording artist. His early demos before Warner Bros are a lot of instrumentals. All he really wanted to do was play instruments. Thats why he can play so many. As he was playing instruments melodies and lyrics kept popping in his head out of nowhere. Remember he was a musician first before everything. If you were a real Prince fan you would understand that and appreciate his musicianship

That the Black Album was a Prince-Album must have been one of the worst kept secrets ever.

In Germany we had a great weekly Funk and Soul radio show. The host was a big Prince fan and she always always played his songs. I don´t remember her name but she played almost the entire Black Album one week before it was about to be released. Then it got pulled.

I think she got in big trouble for playing it but many people (including me) recorded the songs on cassette from that show and did not have to buy the bootleg.

I loved that album and listened to it all the time.

[Edited 11/27/19 10:40am]

Her Name was Ruth Rockenschaub and the radio show was callled "Soul Train" ..every Thursdays eve.

I still have the whole show on Cassette, when she played the Black album in full.

(Back in those days, I felt, what she was doing...but, hey..that was no bootleg, so she could pretend 2 be uninformed about the delete.

I don't know why people keeps saying that Prince had a bad trip with ecstasy. You're not supposed to have bad trips with ecstasy/MDMA, like you can have bad trips with LSD and other psychedelics. Unless you're taking something that's not MDMA, of course, which happens a lot with "street" ecstasy. I've heard that anxiety can be problematic with MDMA if you take a low dose, not a high dose as was the case here, though. Anyway, from this report, it looks like Prince had a regular MDMA experience, i.e. (re)connecting with people, reevaluating his life, etc.

Exactly, you don't have bad trips but you do exactly what is described by all the people involved, you show love towards others and you have this warm feeling inside your body. It was originally used for marriage counseling to help couples express their feelings towards each other more easily.

Well I'm all for people not liking a song and that is fair enough. However, Purple Rain is literally a career defining song for Prince. So often in an article he'll be cited as, 'the Purple Rain singer'. Ask a thousand random members of the public to name a Prince song and Purple Rain would surely rank very highly in the responses.

Like the song or not, there's really no way to look at the career of Prince and call Purple Rain a lesser song, unless you're trolling or just plain crazy.

Yes. Assuming the ecstacy Prince ingested was not contaminated, it must indeed have been weird to witness him being forced to open up. That was unusual for him. So, yeah, it was probably awkward... lol

oh but you can!!

if you never ever tried mdma as substance and your serotonine levels are at its highest, plus you overdose, believe me, it can happen.

I've experienced (out of pure stupidity) an overdose on XTC (took TWO green Androids wich contained 220mg pure MDMA 80% EACH!! ... Info I got afterwards)

I experienced visuals beyond belief.

sound of drums, I am in the middle of a giant dark arena/stadium, filled with neon lit abstract annimals. All dancing in a big circle around me and stepping out of the annimal crowd, trying to attack/touch me. Man I was so aware hat I was in the middle of a trip and was so scared that I would have ended up having a psychosis or something ..when a paper-snow storm rushed over me, and I found myself laying on my bed. I was whispering to myself in my own ear.s and it sounded chrystal clear . stuff I always new about myself apparently, but had totally forgoten about.

I found myself living a life that wasn't suitable for me anymore..It was like somebody had turned on the light in my head. And it stayed on untill this very day!!

I devorced my wife, fell in love with a big bearish MAN, quit my job as a manager in Phorensic Psychiatry and youthcare. and now I am writing my first book.

I am still a different person than before that accident. I was always a very angry and bossy manager, very top/down to staff and workers. very negative and to preoccupied with work, money, clothes, cars, looks.. superficial stuff.. now I have the biggest collection of experiences of all sorts, I am 10 times a better father than ever before, and I know so many interesting people, since I started listening to them..

back to the phenomenon of halucinating or having (closed eyed) visuals due to MDMA overdosing.

reports of drifting out of conciousness into a lively mostly archetypical and symbolic dream for some time is pretty common when overdosing with untouched serotonine levels.

aAfter such a 'big serotonine splash', somebody will likely not experience such an advant from that level again ever.

This is due to the signifantly lowered serotonine levels. It will build up close the old max levels, but very slow and never fully.

therefore some ppl are 'pre-loading' prior to their planned xtc party by taking suplement 5HTP (or L-tryptofaan) weeks before the party. If combined with a proper diet and other supplements (vit. fishoil etc.) the XTC trip will have a similar inpact than the first one. but most likely without (closed eyed) visuals or archetypical dreams.

besides all this. Prince/Cat/Kiedis probably didn't have the luxury we now have (at least in Holland) to test a pill on contents /dossage etc. Prince's XTC could have been 'poluted'with let's say 2c-b, or the content was PMA in stead of MDMA.. so hard to tell what caused all this.

but it's definately possible

440 mg of ecstasy... eek 80-120 is supposed to be the normal dose.

.

Point taken. Thanks for sharing your experience!

.

I guess what I was initially trying to say is that, if you take a normal dose of MDMA, things are supposed to go well, whereas, even with a normal dose of clean/unadulterated psylocybin/LSD, things can go wrong or even very wrong depending on the state you're in (i.e. the set and setting).

I have a little personal story regarding this topic. I was anxiously awaiting the release of the Black Album, and popping into my favorite record store around the time it was supposed to be coming out. Since this was, of course, pre-internet, I don't remember how it was I knew when it was coming out, and I don't remember how I found out that it wasn't. Billboard magazine maybe?

I also don't remember how much later that Lovesexy finally arrived, but I remember being very pleased with Alphabet St when it was released as a single. It is still one of my favorite Prince songs. I was quite annoyed with Prince that he made me buy a cassette with his naked picture on the front, but I was excited to hear it. I found it to be quite strange, and I wasn't sure what to make of it. It did not sound like anything he had done before and also didn't sound like any other music that I'd heard up to that point. Still, I listened to it a lot.

Flash forward a few years, and I had begun to experiment a bit with drugs, smoking weed and even trying LSD, which was a life-altering experience that changed my perspective on a few things. Being a life-long music lover, I also discovered the lovely combination of smoking weed and listening to music, and discovered that some music was better than others for doing this. One day I had the intuition to get high and listen to Lovesexy on headphones. I felt that, for the first time, I understood what he was trying to do with this. It is a weird, psychedelic cartoon, and you are supposed to listen to the whole thing rather than pick songs out of it. There are certain elements, and sounds, that have more impact when you are in an altered state.(To pick one example, in "Positivity" towards the end, he says "Don't kiss the beast" and there is this sound, that was maybe a mouth sound, but really sounded like a serpent slithering through the mud, that was in the background) This seeming mess of sounds he was making sort themselves out and make sense.

"Hmmm", I thought to myself. This record stands out in his catalog, and its specific emphasis on strange sounds and sonic environments, completely out of nowhere, made me wonder if Prince had perhaps himself had an experience with psychedelic drugs, I mean, where did this weird thing come from all of a sudden? This is my favorite Prince album, but it's never stopped being weird.

My boss at the restaurant I worked at at this time was also a Prince fan, and I decided to bring this possibility up with him. He was not having it. At all.

Flash forward an indeterminate amount of years later, and I hear of this rumor. "AHA!!!!!!!!", I thought.

Prince may have been unsettled by his experience because he had some pretty serious peronality issues, insecurity combined with a massive ego, and he was also a control freak. Psychedelics reduce the ego and if the ego tries to fight it, things can go wrong, although ecstacy is extremely mild in comparison to other psychedelics. Lovesexy is a very positive, sensuous, psychedelic album, which leads me to believe that the ecstasy did its job even if it ultimately frightened him. Vestiges of this musical approach continued to appear on Batman and Graffiti Bridge before he went in a different direction in the 90s. There are some good psychedelic tracks on these albums, the Gold Experience especially, but he never got this weird again. I apologize for the hard to read format of this message, it is completely ignoring indentations and lines between the paragraphs for some reason, it looks fine in the window.
