This is an interesting listen. It's clear he certainly tweaked his live performances for the better as his career went on. Some of this the band and his vocals seem very "loose". His band was super tight at the end of his career. I still enjoy hearing his early performances though.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I noticed it most on "Do me baby", it almost seemed like he had no idea where to start singing. When he finally started he wasn't in the right place and didn't sing the first words right and stopped. It's not his voice. He sounds fine. Near the end of his career he could just look at the other band members and they knew what to do. Here it just seems different. Not bad, mind you, just different.

i have heard all the versions of Do Me Baby from the 1999 tour

and i do agree this one is not the best.there are some really good versions of that song

from the same tour but if you want to hear

Princes best vocal work on Do Me Baby you can go no wrong

if you listen to Controversy tour recordings.

On Controversy tour Prince started employing his chest voice so him

combining falsetto

*that also improved a lot since Dirty Mind Tour*

with chest voice when he sings Like you never done before is amazing.

You can check Capitol Theatre version of the song on youtube. best singing ever on Do Me Baby

but there are 1999 tour versions that are great

.

I'm glad he didn't because Dez is a real shitty guitar player imo. Never inspired, his bends are always false, no sense of rythm... Lucky for us that he left the band!

i catch your drift if we talk about his latter playing when Dez was about to leave.

I can say it because i'm a guitar player and rhythm has always been my main focus. Just compare when Prince leaves Dez alone and when he comes back, day and night !

Also, after only two years with Prince Wendy was a better rhythm guitar player imo.

And Dez solos are a nightmare to hear when he doesn't follow the guitar track of the song. For me, when you are enable to be inspired when you improvise on your instrument means you are an ordinary musician.

well im a guitar players also

i do agree that Dez soloing in the late 1982 1983 left a lot to be desired

but he had nice solos b4 1983 and i disagree that Wendy was better

at anything on guitar compared to Dez.

if Dez was not good Prince wouldnt ask to extended his contract

for the next 7 years which Dez rejected

I absolutely love this release. I can't count the number of times I've listened to the earlier show from that night (I first got my hands on a old cassette dub of it back in 1986) so I was ecstatic to hear the late show. The slight variations between the two are like revelations to these old ears!! They crushed this box set! THANK YOU, PRINCE ESTATE!

Dez was spiritually detaching by this time.

He must have had a weird time singing Head on the tour and ready to move onto being a Modernaire with Idol

^ There were multiple shows on several nights.

(Check Princetourhistory via google.sites.)

The new released soundboard audio is for the "late night" or early morning show. Depending on how you look at it.

Love hearing this. The weak point is the monotony of the "drumming" - makes some of the tunes sound borderline amateurish. Despite the great vocals.

.

I haven't personally sought out a great deal of early live boots, so I guess I didn't realize how uninventive Bobby's stick work was... It's almost comically poor on slower numbers like "Do Me Baby" and "International Lover." Just a loop playing? My exposure to the early live material is admittedly limited, just didn't know how stiff and robotic the drum parts sound.

.

But that said, this disc WILL get some heavy rotation in my player - sounds great and it's definitely a fun listen. Fave tracks: "Controversy," "How Come U Don't Call Me," and "Automatic."

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Yes, I never really understood how that all worked in the 80s exactly. Did Bobby Z's hits trigger Linn buttons?

bobby Z was not flashy but he was more than compenent good in the pocket drummer.using linn live at that time was both pioneer and groundbreaking and just because u dont feel it dont mean u should call it weak.btw cymbals were always live
