Bowie sang on "Zeroes" (1987): "And me my little red Corvette has driven by..." He was very impressed with Prince and talked about him in numerous interviews. On the 1983 Serious Moonlight tour he played Prince's 1999 before the concerts - it was actually my introduction to Prince's music. I immediately went out and bought 1999.

Nice to see you posting again, Per smile

Bowie in the late 80s v/s P in the late 80s? Please, Prince was to the 80s what Bowie was to the 70s. Cat made the right choice smile.

Yes, but Prince in the late 80s was floundering in music scene too. It was a weird time the 88-90 period

Pfft, this was 1987, fresh off the release of SOTT. You go with Prince.

I’m sitting here watching the “David Bowie: Finding Fame” docu on Showtime, and realizing that Prince most certainly would have become familiar with David Bowie by 1968-1970. He had a huge hit with Space Oddity and then Ziggy Stardust. David was doing the androgynous thing, wearing make-up and changing his identity.
*
Interestingly, Bowie had a very complicated relationship with his Mother, and was close to his Dad. He also had issues with being social. Lots of parallels.
*
So many common themes with talented musicians/ artists.

I remember David interviewing with Mark Goodman, MTV 'boss', and very pointedly challenging him about the lack of black artists on MTV. He really stood his ground and was advocating hard.

Go David!

Yes, I watched that real-time, and he had Mark squirming big-time. No doubt that contributed to MTV making the change and doing the right thing.

Incidentally, according to Donnie Simpson, Bowie was at Paisley Park the moment that Prince decided not to release The Black Album. I'd take it with a pinch of salt, but those eyes couldn’t lie, surely. wink

When Prince dressed in that yellow suit and tie at his birthday celebration in Detroit 1986...he sang in that commanding voice that felt he was channeling David Bowie...anotherloverlikeaholeinyourhead

Nah, the people who were actually at PP the night Prince took the “X” and cancelled the Black Album have already told the story - Cat Glover, Ingrid Chavez, and Susan Rogers.

Right...Like it's KNOWN Ingrid was a big reason. I'm not sure what Donny is thinking. And that clickbait title...smh

Well, I think the “X” was as much or more responsible for him canceling the Black album, because he had only just met Ingrid for the first time that night. But yes, she certainly helped with the LoveSexy material smile

Indeed.

It's just....bizarre that Donnie would jump in on something like The Black Album

If you listen to Prince's 'Roadhouse Garden' track, it's obvious he's familiar with Bowie's vocal style, as to me, he mimics it somewhat in this song. Possibly one reason he never released it - too obviously aping Bowie smile.

I can easily hear Bowie singing 'Roadhouse Garden'.
