"The final straw, according to many of Prince’s and André’s associates, came when Prince decided to dig up a song his partner had written back in 1979. “Do Me, Baby” originated from the same February 17, 1979 sessions as “If You Feel Like Dancin’,” “One Man Jam,” and early versions of André’s “Thrill You or Kill You” and Prince’s “I Feel for You”; at the time, however, it was unambiguously an André Cymone joint. “I had written it for a girlfriend,” Cymone recalled on a recent episode of the Dr. Funk Podcast, and had “forgot about the song” by the time he heard it again at a band rehearsal–introduced as a new composition by Prince (Funkenberry 2017).

“André called me up on that song,” recalled Pepé Willie, who had been present at its recording in 1979. “He said, ‘Hey, you remember I did it in New York?’ I said, ‘What, the slow jam?’ He said, ‘Yeah, well, Prince has taken it for his album’” (Hill 38). For Cymone, the sticking point seemed to have been less about Prince’s appropriation of the song–this was, after all, not the first time his friend had borrowed his licks–and more about his cavalier attitude toward the act. Terry Jackson, another mutual friend from the Grand Central days, told Hahn and Tiebert that André confronted Prince the first time he heard “Do Me, Baby” in rehearsal, asking, “Why are you doing this, man?” Prince responded bluntly: “Because I’m a star and you’re not” (Hahn 2017)."

You nailed my it friend (you must be a true Funkateer)! I would be willing to bet money Andre ( and Prince) had heard that cut back in the day. Andre may have subconsciously stole it from Eddie and then Prince consciously stole it from Andre! Anyone that doesn't hear the similarities is deaf.

Eddie Hazel's a name in all the guitar thread when people are going off, "Obviously directly influenced by Hendrix, OBVIOUSLY. No question. Hendrix all day." I'm thinking like uhh... He couldn't have just been a huge Eddie Hazel fanboy growing up?

I've heard this for years..Prince took Andre's song. I don't care...he more than proved how great a writer he was over the next 4 decades. Sheeeeeeet...he prob made it better.

Speaking as a guitar player, I honestly don't think so tbh. Clearly both loved their high-gain tone but the style is so different. I love the P-Funk mob and Eddie's playing too, but he's just so different from Prince. Clearly Prince listened to all sorts growing up, and you can hear THAT in his playing. Even his rhythm parts feel like a mad cocktail mixture of lots of thing of the era, not just the usual lazy James Brown band comparisons.

Maybe time for us all to start living with the fact that Prince isn't easily comparable to another lead guitarist

Listening to it now. Definitely hear the chords in the beginning. They are so quiet, though. Surprising that anyone could identify it.

It isn't the entire song. There is a 10-15 second segment of the song that is note 4 note.

I'll have 2 take a listen again and let u know what part it is.
