It's a fun mixtape and decent stopgap until they can get the TMBGITW lawsuit cleared for a full TGE re-release (fingers crossed, Deluxe Edition)

Agreed... I like the album (if ‘album’ isn’t too ambitious a word for it, lol). It’s short and sweet, has some lesser-spotted material on it and is, as you say, a decent TGE stopgap.

I was disappointed with the sound quality of the RSD cassette being no better than bootlegged copies but still happy to have bought it... until I heard about today's release. I would have skipped the cassette and waited for the CD. Got the CD today but passed on the vinyl, figured the fidelity would not be worth it.

Not dead, not in prison, still funkin'...

I just noticed there isn't a dedicated thread to today's reissue of The Versace Experience (or at least I couldn't find one). Thoughts? I recorded my thoughts alongside my Aussie mates in the Peach & Black Podcast review, also released today biggrin https://peachandblack.pod...ld-review/

.

It's a very odd choice for release. If you're buying the vinyl and/or CD, are you aware that it's sourced from a cassette tape??

.

[Edited 9/12/19 22:08pm]

Never understood the point of this. I bought it, arried today. I ripped it and put it in my digital library. I don't think Rootie Kazootie (which was the only thing I was looked forward to) sounds great sonically. Not as good as '17'...that's for sure.

With so much amazing material, why would they put this out. junk.

I had fun listening to this on Spotify today. Nothing essential, but a fun curiosity. Can't seem to find the CD in stores here in Oz, so I might have to go hunting for it.

.

Where in Oz are you? I live in Brisbane and found the CD and JB HiFi Indooroopilly. Surprisingly, I didn't see any in the 3 city stores when I went hunting for it this morning.

I'm in Sydney. The only option I see online is delivery, unfortunately!

This is not really important to have. I’m presuming if you’re a fan you have all of these songs as they were intended. The most interesting thing here is Chatounette Control. I could listen to that kind of stuff all day.

Overall, the scraping of the purple barrel. Roll on 1999 Deluxe!

Yeah. It's so weird because I could have imagined this being released after maybe after 10-15 years of slow drip-feed reissues. It's weird that of all the potential things to reissue The Versace Experience would be one of the earliest! My guess is Sony & The Estate wanted to reissue The Gold Experience, but it's under some obscure legal bind, and so this release is a sneaky way of getting around it.

Love the podcast ToeJam. Heard you guys saying that the original cassette was worth $4K? You could visit Paisley Park from anywhere on Earth for that. FULL VIP PACKAGE. I’d skip owning this short mixtape and save for the book.

I'm listening now. Definitely fun to have but I doubt it will get heavy rotation. The sound quality is shit but I wasn't expecting much. I had a rip of this for years and it sounds about the same. I'm glad I have it but I'm kind of a completist.

Dude, just go to Red Eye or Hum Music in Newtown. They should have plenty of copies of these reissues.

I'll probably buy the CD since I've had the boot for a little while. The old creed of buying someething once it's made available if you had the bootleg.

I doubt I'll listen to it much though. As someone said earlier, it's not essential. It's for completists.

As a completist (with the cd's anyway- I don't have the time to go search out everything that's out there in the ethernet) I am liking this release but it's not going to be something that I listen to constantly. It's rather jarring to be listening to a song that I know well and it abruptly stops midway through. I am disappointed that there are no pictures of Prince.

I find it interesting that the 2019 CD artwork doesn't follow the original CD artwork.

This is odd, so why go to the trouble of creating something different.

Originally the 2019 RSD cassette was advertised as a replica but it clearly isn't when compared to the 1995 promo.

Care to elaborate? There was no "original CD artwork". It's never been released on CD before. It's the same basic artwork as the original cassette just modified slightly to fit the CD case dimensions, no?

Listened to my cd today. It’s certainly better than the RSD cassette, which I wish I passed on now. The sound quality on Billy Jack Bitch and Gold are noticeably worse than the rest of the “mix” but are still probably the best we will ever get on this collection. I wouldn’t rate it as essential. Spend your money on Emancipation or C&D on CD or vinyl if you don’t have them. This is certainly a nice-to-have thing officially on CD and I kind of felt obligated to buy it after having the bootleg for so long.

Totally pointless.

BUT, if a causal fan doesn’t know TGE and plays this on Spotify, I think there’s enough there to make them seek out the full album. And I guess, that’s the historical context to it.

Saw it on vinyl in JB in Auckland but they don’t have the CD and I don’t do vinyl.
Got the CD on order but can’t imagine unwrapping it.

I was going to get the cd, but I’m shocked to hear it’s not from a master tape! Unbelievable really. Nothing released so far has been perfect, so slightly worried about 1999 remaster!

If you don't tell anything to a Hipster, nerd, video gamer, high brow clientele and play them Rootie Kazootie they will go "Well, guess I'm a Prince fan now". That is the power of his back catalogue. And especially when he incorporate modern Jazz into the mix. I Adore this song! Amazing guitar playing. Lukewarm reception from you toejam and the entire P&B crew.

It's a fun little time capsule of one of my favourite Prince eras. It's a brief, enjoyable ride that delivers what it was originally conceived for and is a nice curiosity for the hardcore fan.

It being ripped from a cassette when digital copies are clearly available isn't acceptable or excusable.

^As far as Madhouse and Madhouse-esque purple instrumentals go, "Rootie Kazootie" is pretty light weight. The guitar solo is fine, but I'd hardly describe it as "amazing". The best solo imo is Prince's keyboard solo, but that's edited out on this release.

Hello, in recent years the original cassette and CD mock-ups have been issued.

In fact in recent years many mock-ups for aborted releases have been issued, such as the third configuration of 24 by the New Power Madhouse.

Still waiting to recieve my CD copy from Amazon. I don't have high expectations since i'm not much into remixes but nice to have.

I'll listen to the podcast after I have listened to the album.
